So with my Note 20 Ultra due to arrive tomorrow, do people have any tips for a new Note owner/first time Android user? (unless you count when I brought the S4 years ago but didn't keep very long).

Should I get a screen protector? I have never used one with any of the iPhones I've owned, I tend to be careful with my devices, however I'm not sure if it's recommended with Samsung phones.
Make sure you have a USB-C to Lightning cable to use the Smart Switch app without any problems. My Note came with a screen protector pre-installed - it's not glass, but a very high quality plastic, it's been two weeks and it held up amazingly well so far, i cannot even see it. However, I think this might depend on the market. I'm in Europe and I got the phone from German Amazon. If you wish, you might also get a memory card, so that all your pictures will be saved directly there and thus it'll be easier for you to transfer them to your mac from where they will be automatically uploaded to icloud.

Btw, if you use WhatsApp, be prepared that their backups are not compatible between ios and android for some reason, so your chats will not be transferred. There are some workaround solutions to it, i didn't use them, but you can easily Google it.

Screen protector: yes. Consider that you'll be using the S-pen with your phone, and the higher risk of scratches with the pen tip catching some sand particles.

If you have not done so, migrate your stuff to Google by exporting your contacts to GMail. It's better imo to use GMail for your contacts as it syncs back to iOS just fine.

Other tips you can check: https://www.android.com/switch/

I personally think Samsung's Smart Switch is way better than switching through Google, in the end it's tailored specifically for their smartphones.

Whilst you’re deciding whether to keep or not, the factory screen protector will tide you over

Thank you for the tips you have given so far ? it's appreciated! I simply couldn't pass up this offer, I've also been intrigued by the Buds Live since they were announced, and how they would compare to the AirPods Pro (of which I have had issues with).

well for better or for worse I’ve just placed an order for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Live Buds. The offer/discount was just to good to miss. I just hope I don’t regret this
Give it more like a few days lol needs a good week or more to see if it's OK for you

First time Android user? Lol. Exciting times... you gonna have some fun. It’s a lot to take in... you not only moving to Android, but a Galaxy phone.. so there’s gonna be added features. I would say take your time with trying to make it your own. Meaning, try things out.. see how you feel about it.

I tend to follow Sakitech... he’s good at finding new features and helping first time buyers through tutorials.

I read so many comments here about the ecosystem and how hard it is to switch and you know what, guys? This is blown out of proportions.

I switched to the Note two weeks ago and tbh, it was a breeze. Samsung has this app smart switch where you connect your old iphone with the note and all the data are copied - including all photos, pictures, contacts and so on, to the point that when it was all done, my home screen on the note looked the same way it did on my iphone, the order of the apps and wallpaper included. I was really worrying about this switch, but it is really nothing bad. I found some nice apps which work well across all platforms - so I now use Microsoft's To-Do and One Note instead of the stock Apple apps as I also have an iPad and a MacBook. All the music I bought on iTunes over the last seven years was also transferred to my Note with no struggle whatsoever. I still can upload all the photos to iCloud - granted, I have to do this manually, but it works really fast and is reliable. I will for sure consider switching to Amazon's cloud, as I have prime and it would mean not having to pay Apple for 2TB of storage every month... But we will see.

Possibly the only thing which might be slightly inconvenient from my perspective is the lack of access to the iCloud drive with all the files from my Note. But then again, I almost always have my iPad with me, so this is really something which I do not care much about and which makes me actually happy that I am not 100% dependent on Apple now who will do everything to lock you in their ecosystem.

I do not use Watch, so no issue here, but I can imagine that for some this might be a bummer and an obstacle which cannot be overcome... But then again, this goes on to show me what kind of company Apple is and I am pretty happy I am no longer 100% in.

When it comes to other experiences... I have the exynos version, so the battery life is not amazing, if I am on wifi only, then it is fine for the entire day, but if I am on the cellular, then I prefer to have the charger with me. But as someone already pointed out, charging is so fast that it is not a serious issue, tbh, and now I can use the same charger for both my iPad and my phone, which is great. Design is amazing, I was considering how I would deal with a phone this big, but this issue does not exist at all. Actually, quite the opposite, my former iPhone X seems super tiny now. For a short moment I was considering also the S20+/Ultra, but the rounded edges seem so long in the tooth now and the Note is the closest we really get to a full screen display. As also pointed out by someone else, the 120Hz screen makes the difference and iPhones feel strangely slow/less fluid - just yesterday I was playing with the 12/12 Pro in the store and was negatively surprised with them, but I guess it is just the screen with a significantly lower refresh rate. On the other hand, however, I sometimes get the feeling that when scrolling very fast through certain websites/apps, there is little framing, but this really depends on the app/website, so I do not think this is Note's issue.
It isnt blown out of proportions though as if you are used to an apple watch the difference without one is quite massive.

You can switch but if you are stuck in your ways and need certain features from an os the ecosystem is a deal breaker

Would you say they are good for exercising? I run a lot and would love to be able to wear them for that.

Honestly no I think they are better suited for just walking, at your desk or on the sofa and around the house. They dont feel as safe in my ears as air pods pros or over the ear headphones. It's why I use xm3 for working out

As @The Game 161 illustrated, it's really not blown out of proportion. It's angles involved with the decision to switch from someone social circle to the habits they developed over time using their designated ecosystem. Obviously, you can switch.. it's not a life or death situation. But factors can make it annoying when people are accustomed to certain ways.

Yes, and it's always pointless to generalise because this depends so much on each person's work flow, habits, preferences etc. For me personally, since about a year I have my entire Mac desktop and documents folders on iCloud and access those regularly from my phone. That alone is so useful for me that switching to an Android daily driver phone just wouldn't be worth it. Whereas before that, I would switch back and forth now and then without much trouble, even though I use a Mac and Apple Watch.

I think I do have one of those with either my iPhone, Mac or iPad ironically. So when using Smart Switch, will it transfer all my apps and data like photos, emails, txt messages and so on?

I don’t use WhatsApp, only Facebook messenger and txting/iMessage. But mainly Messenger for group chats.

For your first few days:

- download your most used apps and login
- try the theme store and check out some of the wallpapers and video lock screens - they are free in a lot of cases
- don’t mess around with launchers yet, stock is good for now
- go through all the settings, every inch, there’s so much it can feel overwhelming but empowering too, check out things like smart lock
- if you don’t like the way say Samsung messages work; download an alternative- Google Messages etc
- check out widgets
- play with what type of Home Screen you want, app drawer or swipe
- check for software updates
- spend a good few hours looking at the camera settings
- explore AOD and edge lighting
- change your alarm snooze length
- check out apps edge

Following the above, check out YouTube on a few tips etc. You’ll be so amazed. Keep us posted.

Yeah, that's absolutely true. But in such a case you just give up on the thought of switching and accept what you have instead of making a huge drama out of it (I don't mean you personally, of course, but talk in general) ??

Yeah, you can choose what you want to transfer and the phone automatically does that.

Btw, turn off imessage on all of your apple devices before switching to Note.

It’s a good app, I agree but for a brand new iPhone to Samsung user, they need a little time to go through what’s on the device already. Otherwise it’s a bit overwhelming.
But then the swiping to back function might make it easier for someone who's used to it on iOS.

That's why my recommendation to @Dave245 was to not go deep dive into it. Take small steps to get accumulated to his device and slowly try to make it his own. We all here has had quite a bit of history with Galaxy phones and are knowledgeable about all the goodies they provide to tweak however we see fit.

Its plenty of stuff I'm aware of.. tried the feature and just didn't fit for some reason.

Yeah, I use Android 10 Swipe gestures over the traditional button layouts. Definitely makes the transition easy when coming from iOS.

Not the gestures (I'd never use buttons again!), I meant with Good Lock you can then swipe to go back on apps. As far as I know, it's not possible without it on Samsung.

I can do that with the gestures, I’m sure there’s a Good Lock feature to add more functionality to it. But I can swipe back to apps similar to how it’s done on iOS.
