I’m honestly not sure if this says more about the S10 or all of the other android devices on the market...

He slams the FPS, the camera, the charging, and of course the slow updates and still says “this is the android phone to buy”. That’s actually kind of sad.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/...good-that-my-pixel-3-xl-is-going-in-a-drawer/
That's the most grumpy review that is written in recommendation of a product that I've ever read.

He is gloriously grumpy. I bow down to his grumpiness. It is a thing of beauty. A marvel of perfection.

I disagree completely with his assessment of the beauty of the phone design. I think the camera bump on the S10+ is as attractive as anyone can make these things. They don't stick out to the point of worry and distraction like they do on an iPhone and the Chinese clones. And they're not located in an area of the phone where I am likely to obscure them with a finger, as I often do the lens on my Pixel 3XL. I do have some lovely vacation photos of my fingers.

I can possibly see his point about the FPS. Some people on Android Central seem to be having trouble no matter what they do. Some of us do have fingerprints that challenge first or even second generation sensors.

Just so we are clear:

If the reviewer says the phone is amazing then they are to be praised, but when they say the FPS is the biggest downside of the phone they aren’t to be trusted?

They say at the top of the review that the Display is the best in the business??
Didn't read the review but of they trashed the camera and charging its hard to take it too seriously as both are very good

If he says it's the best device you can buy on android then great. For me it's the best device on the market until the note 10

Yeah, at the beginning he says something to the effect of “we know all of the amazing things, we’re going to talk about the negatives.”

I agree with the approach. If all reviews sugar-coat the phone you’re never going to get an honest opinion. All that is given is “best phone ever.” “This this rocks.” And the reviewers never dive into the downsides. iPhone reviewers tend to do the same thing. But I don’t think that turning it around the way they did here makes it any less credible.

I've always had the mindset the only review that really matters is your own. Seeing other reviewers opinions helps and what to look fo but the experience for one isn't the same for others

Like with FPS I've had no issues since the update while others have.

I gotta say the S10+ has exceeded my expectations. The phone is extremely fast and the camera is fantastic! The FPS was slow and missed the mark until the software update. I deleted and readded my fingerprints again and it has made a world of difference! It is super fast now.

I am torn between keeping the S10+ or Pixel 3XL.

I want to look at the S10 5G. It has the size I like. It is more like what the Note 10 will be. Not getting it for 5G as that service won't be fully deployed until next year.
Did you install the Google camera app on it yet? My husband has really had fun with it.

I love my Pixel 3XL and because of my unique vision problems will be keeping it to have the most pleasant comfortable display to read on. But the battery life is so...well you know, it needs a bit of babysitting. My Xr is typical Apple, stays on close to 100% for an hour and then falls off a cliff.

The S10 phones in all sizes look like good all-arounders. For me, at least.

Another question for you lovely people - The mobile status/data icon in the status bar is a bit fussy and tiny. Is it possible to simplify it or make it bigger so you can actually see what it says? At the moment it's so tiny it looks like gibberish.

I haven't tried the Gcam app on the S10+ yet.

What icon pack is this? I really like it.

It is Lean launchers default icons, but there is an option within the home screen settings to change the icon pack to a Google style one - or something like that - and it changes them all.

Yep my wife is one of those even airport security told us so, We have e-visa's so we can skip normal immigration checks and waiting in line but it took my wife 3 trips and sitting in airport security doing multiple scans before she could use the e-gates

As normal users are quick to blame their phones

My partner has terrible fingerprints. From the iPhone 5S to his present iPhone 7, the FPSs simply don't work for him. I want to move him onto a FaceID capable phone as soon as possible.

Are we at a point where Bixby surpassed Siri? I would laugh if Siri is behind Bixby because Apple had such a huge lead w/ AI assistants and it got squandered due to their hubris.

1. Google Assistant
2. Alexa
3. Cortana
4. Bixby
5. Siri

Is that the new list lol?

Well that's better than Apple here, no exchange, return or anything other than a DOA

I wonder how that is allowed to happen? The UAE isn't as consumer friendly? Or is that Apple is so large that they can be stringent in areas they look to be cheaper in?

The e fps is flawless for me and plenty of others on various other forums I frequent.

Sure there may be a few would rather it was a little lower on the side but no one I can recall has issue with its operation(apart from @nviz22).

Yeah, the sensor wasn't working all too great for me. But Kellen from DroidLife actually has a video of him testing it out. If you do a slight tap, it might read more accurately. I am in the process of rescanning my fps and putting my S10e to better use within the next week or so.

It took whatever generation the one on the iPhone 8 Plus is for Apple FPS to work well for me. So Apple finally got there and of course discontinued it.

It took Samsung time to get to the S9+ to get it working for me.

HTC worked well first time I ever tried it and same for Pixel 3 and Pixel 3

I am a bit anxious about my prospects with the S10+. I suppose I can always send everything back and then try the S10e order I have queued up if I can’t get the in display one to work decently for me. What I do notice is that it is a bit slow even when it does work. My IPhone XR Face ID is a bit slow, too. Lol, it doesn’t help I keep fingering the back of it looking for the FPS when I switch between it and my Pixel. :p

My husband absolutely loves Bixby now. I haven’t really paid attention to what’s going on but he’s been diving into Bixby to get it to customize his phone to recognize when he’s at work and change settings. I don’t know the details so I can’t tell you what all that man has gone and done but it seems Bixby is his new best buddy. I guess that’s a good thing.

I really think so many of the big named reviewers miss the mark because they instantly dismiss Bixby. These people earn money making reviews, but apparently can’t be bothered to make the effort like my husband has done to see what it’s actually capable of. It’s very juvenile in my opinion for a professional to just hop on the “Bash Bixby” Bandwagon because that’s the cool thing to do. He’s a ridiculously busy man with only a few minutes of truly free time a day yet he managed to spare a few minutes here and there to make Bixby productive for his needs. So you’d think a reviewer could manage it.

But no, time after time I see the Bixby button dismissed as something you can now remap.

So I'm day 5 into S10 ownership now and I still have made no decision around which phone I actually want to keep (this or XR). :p

Have I missed using my iPhone? Not reallllly. Maybe a little for certain apps like WhatsApp, which I just don't think is as good on Android.

The actual hardware of my XR I don't miss at all really. It's very heavy and the screen doesn't look amazing now after staring at the S10 for the last 5 days.

One thing that I haven't missed too much is the Apple Watch. I don't use it like some die hards do - so there's no fitness going on with my Watch haha  I don't count steps, the heart rate monitor was turned off when I got it and I used it for notifications only. I don't find myself bothered that I can't see them until I go and check my phone - it actually gives me a reason to be on my phone when I go back to it after a long period of time without it. Rather than it being in front of me and a distraction.

I haven't had chance to test the camera at all on the S10 yet, outside of pictures taken in and around the house - which are totally uninteresting. It looks decent enough though.

I think I could easily sell my XR and keep this S10, but my only concern would be when the next good Android comes out - will my head turn. I don't want to embroil myself in that kind of swapping and changing like I've done so much of in the past. I've had my XR for the last 6 months and was more than happy with it. My concern would be swapping to the S10 and becoming fatigued with certain things quicker than I am on iOS.

It's always more difficult to go back to iPhone outside of my upgrade cycle due to how expensive their hardware is. That's why I planned to just keep my XR, but here we are with an S10 in hand.

The fingerprint reader has become extremely reliable for me now, no issues at all to report really.
I do prefer music play back on Android - I like having many options with controls (lock screen, notification shade etc) - it is a better user experience. Even if I do prerfer Apple Music on iPhone over any other Android music play back.
I've opted for YouTube Music which I much prefer over Spotify which was my go to for Android Music.

Google Play Music is terrible in my opinion, so anything better than that is all I look for.

I'm still unsure over the S10 or the Plus. But that's something of nothing really as the phones are still essentially the same, and it's the experience of Samsung's android on here that is the biggest test.

Now I have the Lean Launcher installed, (and a new icon pack which has changed Samsung's awful stock apps to Google-ified ones) - I'm much happier.
Check them lovely icons out. :D

xtY3OBI.jpg

It doesn't look like a Samsung (software) now - which I'm pleased with haha. I know that's a terrible thing to say, but their aesthetic has always been extremely lacking for me.
I have been guilty in the past though of just accepting something at face value and deciding I don't like it. I haven't done that with the S10 as much. From people's help here, I have changed a lot on the phone to suit it more to my tastes and it has made a huge difference.

It's only Samsung, to my knowledge, that let you personalise like that. So massive hats off to them for allowing it.

Some of their aesthetic is great though - I love the lock screen music play back / controls.

lZRMgJU.jpg

I am not crazy about that FPS icon and that pause button not being aligned though... But I'll let them off.

Overall, I do love the S10. Compared to other Android phones I've used, it is up there as one of the better ones, no question.
I think I will continue with it over the coming days and see how it treats me a week into ownership. Should be in a much better position then to make a decision. :)

How did you get the date to look like that? Is it part of lean launcher or something separate?

Yeah bixby routines I find very good

I have one set for when I say good night my alarms are set and brightness goes down to 0% and when I get to work WiFi is off etc

There's more to go through but they seem good

I think it’s more so why leave something good that works on Android? The Google Assistant is so far ahead of the curve that Samsung has to go back and revise until it gets more buzz. I ignore Bixby due to it just being more of a hinderance from my days on the S9.

I don't think Apple prices are relatively speaking cheap anywhere except US

It's just a common over looked point here with so many US forum members that they assume Apple polices are the same worldwide

Outside north Americas a few European countries Australia, Singapore and several others Apple is no better than Samsung etc. If anything Apple products are much harder to sell 2nd hand as all it's bells and whistles revolve around restrictive Apple subscriptions that many do not want

Many Apple products and even features are not available worldwide and some are just useless or banned

This try before you buy seems to over inflate prices worldwide is my biggest gripe as the majority do not get these benefits and prices get abused

This.

The only real problem with Bixby is that it feels like it's being forced on you by Samsung which people don't like. Until just recently it came with a button on your phones that couldn't be ramapped and it was a pain in the ass to completely opt out and turn off Bixby. Samsung needs to let their users choose Bixby rather than force it down their throats.
