Ok so I just got back from Best Buy checking out the s10+. My initial impressions are as follows:

Physically the phone is light and materially unimpressive, save except for the front glass screen. Honestly, this phone aesthetically speaking is not the iPhone equal. Everything but the screen felt cheap. If that's metal on the sides, then it must be very cheap metal cause it feels like plastic. I would say the Galaxy Note line is more materially and
aesthetically close to the iPhones than the S series. It honestly felt cheap, except the screen if I'm being honest.

One UI is not as smooth as iOS. YouTube takes like half a second to rotate. As much as I watch You Tube and go back and forth between portrait and landscape that would drive me nuts.

One UI gestures pale in comparison to iOS. Ex. When you bring up multitask you have to use the home gesture to exit that function; you can't just tap off anywhere like iOS. Pulling down twice on the notification center seems counter intuitive to me as well. Also, Android is still choppy; especially noticed coming from an iPhone.

I don't see how anyone who is into
aesthetics could possibly even think about picking galaxy s10 over iPhone. It's like Fischer Price vs Tonka.

Split screen was nice to play with and so was pop out window. Of course the Always On Display was present and added a nice touch. I can also confirm the phone does have tap to wake.

In closing I see why several reviewers said the phone seems light... Cause it feels like plastic. Again, I hope the s10 succeeds and does well, but no way am I giving up dual sim, buttery smooth iOS, stainless steel, and the best supported phone on the planet for this galaxy iteration. Maybe next year Samsung.

To get out in front... These are MY OPINIONS and there's no disrespect intended. I feel the way I feel and that's all there is to it.

Thanks for reading!!!

Your opinion sounds bias.

iPhone notch and camera bump and the roughness of ridges between the steel rims and screen already cannot make it - lousy design and poor quality...that's more objective isn't it? :p

You seem like criticizing the way Android works based on your biased opinions against the iPhone. The S line feeling cheaper than the Note series? The are made from the exact same materials as their generation. I'm not sure if I take your review serious or not but iPhone isn't made of any magical metal. Metal is metal, ceramic is ceramic. Nothing that had been coming from Samsung since the Note 3 has had "cheap" written on it.

There is a difference in feel between aluminum and the type of metal they use on newer iPhones.

That i understand, but to say the Note feels more premium then the S line i had to laugh, they are made of the exact same materials and really makes it hard to take the rest of the post seriously.

I can't say for certain on this case, but sometimes a more dense product has the effect of feeling premium to some people. I know when I picked up one of the LG phones, part of the reason I didn't buy it was because it was too light and somewhere in my mind that became "not as good".

I'm not saying it should weigh five pounds, but maybe that's what's happening here. They are both as premium, obviously, but maybe that can explain the issue.

And in 6 months people will be saying the exact same thing about the S10 and going to whatever iPhone / iOS 13 combination is being released. It happens every single year.
switching back and forth between iPhone / Samsung flagships in the past few years..I really doubt that.
the only reason I switched back to iPhones was purely because I had other linked iOS / Mac devices, but I always found Samsung flagship phones superior in terms of hardware and design.

But maybe they are.
He quoted me talking about the differences in materials from iPhone to iPhone when I specifically quoted someone else who claimed the S line feels cheap compared to the Note series, while both feel cheaper compared to the iPhone. Why do I have to explain myself...

Superior hardware and design will only last for so long. Look at Sony.
In 6 months or so, the Chinese phones will sport the same hardware design and look as Samsung's, and sell them for half price.

I mean we can look at the Xiaomi Mi9. Sleek curved glass design, Snapdragon 855, triple camera, all for just ~$500.

Currently i buy those small round stickers and cover the front camera.

With s10 it will be hard because there is no bezel to stick to. S10's front cam position makes it hard too.

I thought that may be your solution :)

I see where your coming from with a notch or bezel your muscle memory knows there is no screen interaction in those areas so your finger does not find your little dot very often :)

I would propose the same is likely to occur with the hole or pill punch on the S10's as there is little reason to be touching there

However there are other simple solutions if you think you would not automatically adapt

The most obvious is to toggle the bezel option in settings but kind of defeats the purpose of the infinity screen

If the S10's do come with factory fitted screen protectors then there are several options on filling the hole or pill slot in the protector:
  • Mask and spray/paint the area
  • Use a transfer from a model kit
  • Use the reverse part of a second screen protector ie the little holes cutouts you normally throw away or cut your own
  • Use other art material that include stick on solutions
I'm sure you can find an elegant solution but equally I think you may find there is not a problem and you can continue with your current one :)

Thanks Steve if I buy s10 I might download an app called cam shield. It will electronically shield the front cams. Not that I am paranoid , I just feel comfortable.

You do know I'm half being a smart-ass joker here.

But really iOS looks no freaking different than it did 12 years ago turn on an iPhone XS Max or turn on an iPhone 5 or an iPhone 3g, I can't even tell the difference. App drawer left permently open with lame icons, that haven't changed in design maybe once in iOS 7 ?

Different strokes, for different folks, I say.

I do think Apple makes the best hardware out of anyone, and designs a beautifully crafted piece of art for their phones. But the software is pure ****
Yep it's one of my major dislikes and stops me from buying an Iphone again, it does not matter how nice it may feel in the hand or premium the materials may be perceived to be it just looks like a cheese grater to me :D

Maybe that's where SJ got his inspiration when cooking dinner one night LOL

I hope the real screen protector isn’t the one in that video with the hole in it.

Completely agree with this. I always felt Samsung had superior hardware (from the S6) and features (always). The only thing the iPhone has going for it is the ecosystem. The iPhone hasn’t been competitive in terms of features or hardware for several years now. I’m not excited for the next iPhone and I wasn’t excited for the Xs or the x. I only bought them because I was in the ecosystem.

I honestly couldn’t give a toss about stainless steel on a phone. There was nothing wrong with aluminium. Also if that’s part of the reason the last 2 iPhones have been ridiculously expensive then they can keep it.

It you set it up you can swipe down anywhere on the home screen to pull down the notification shade.

Our mind set changes over time. I had the original galaxy note, note 3, S4, S5 and note 4. None of them felt cheap to me at the time. However since acquiring an S5 again it did feel cheap but that’s because I’ve spent the past 4 years with aluminium. I remember when the S6 came out I remember lamenting about how Samsung had given in to all the haters about their build quality and sacrificed the removable battery and SD card slot. However now I couldn’t imagine going back to such a design. Anyhow thats not to say that the S series or note series feels cheap. I actually prefer the in hand feel of my husband’s note 8 over my Xs max. I don’t see the point of the stainless steel on the X series aluminium is fine. If Apple wanted to make a premium phone then they should have given it premium features and specs. My phone isn’t a fashion accessory. Most of the YouTube reviewers regard Samsung to have the vest hardware now. It’s ironic since they were ridiculed not so long ago. Even on this site many iPhone users say every year they wish the latest Samsung phone ran iOS. They like the build quality!

The S10 plus is a beauty. Never looked at the other 2 as I only have eyes for the bigger display. It makes my Xs max feel ugly and dated.

I can't say for certain, but I doubt the stainless steel added as much as things like the OLED (having one that is curved on the bottom to hide the ribbon isn't cheap) and their FaceID.

Both things that I didn’t care about but had to pay for (Bending the screen and Face ID). I don’t see why having an Oled display should significantly increase the price. There are other phones with Oled panels that don’t cost as much. The mate 20 pro has OLED and it’s own version of Face ID and it doesn’t cost anywhere near as much as a Xs max.

This was such a marketing hype thing, even the marketing picture showed the oled screen bent over, but if you watch a display tear down, down to separate layers, you can see it isn't the actual oled rather than the lower substrate that is curved or rather, folded under.

Ditto else it will be pulled off immediately

I think another poster noted they come with a special Samsung one to work through the FP sensor so we should be in the clear :D

I suspect the fold is not possible with the S10 curved sides else Samsung being the originator of both designs would of added it to the S10 and S10+

S9 plus vs S10 plus.

I’m happy with what I can see here. Super sad said you can just get closer to your subject if you want a closer portrait mode. However the S10 portrait shot was better than the one on the S9 anyway even if it had a wider field of view.

Even at the park with my kids this weekend I took a few shots where the wide angle lens would have come in handy.

I agree. Samsung have decided not to use this design. It’s not because they can’t as some have tried to claim.
[doublepost=1551166198][/doublepost]I’m going to put my sim in my S5 today I think, although my cousin has just upgraded from her S7 and said I can use it until my S10 plus comes next week. Figured I may as well get myself away from my iPhone and start getting used to Samsung full time again. There’s no point in continuing with my iPhone if I don’t plan on using it after next week. I’ve had my Apple Watch off all weekend and I’ve been using my kindle fire HD with the play store side loaded more and my google homes and echos over my HomePods and iPads this weekend too.

Point being the process of having the screen that close to the bottom probably raised the cost of the construction of the screen.

And if you think tbe OLED on the iPhone is the same as the one in the Mate 20 Pro, I don't know what to say.

I’ve not seen the one on the mate 20 pro for more than a minute. However the one on the iPhone is no better than Samsung’s own OLED displays on their phones and they don’t need to charge exorbitant prices. The pixel 3XL uses a Samsung panel which is currently rated as the best screen on a phone (displaymate). Google also aren’t charging exorbitant prices.

Google also has a nicely sized chin on their phones, I'm using the 3XL to type this message to you. And it isn't even just the bottom speaker, there's more room there that could have been erased.

It could have but it has a better camera and a more advanced AI. The S10 plus has a better screen to body ratio the Xs max, triple camera system, can be used with gear VR, has reverse wireless charging, in display FPS, it can be used as a desktop computer, SD card expansion, has split screen apps and pip, AOD, multiple methods of unlocking and still costs less than the max. The note 9 has better feature than the Xs max and still costs less. Those are premium phones and still cost less than the Xs max. There’s no justification for Apple’s prices. iOS and an ecosystem can’t justify costing £200 for half the storage.

I wouldn't compare the S10 and iPhone XS. The price difference is 100$ and it was heavily reported around the time the X came out that Samsung was charging Apple extra. A large portion of your items aren't even hardware things. I could bring up that Apple has to do more software work than Samsung and supports the devices longer if you want to go down that road.
