Welp, I am out at $1400.

With the leaked pricing it is looking like it will be around $300 ahead of what I was expecting($1400), for the base 128GB model. It is going to cost more than a base macbook pro, more than my i7 2060 laptop, more than round trip airfare plus a week of hotel in Europe, more than my first car, more than a 75 inch 4k TV, more then a note 10+, and 299 McDonald's $1 cheeseburgers, it has seriously crossed the line into a luxury product.

Just for a bit of context for how over the line Samsung has gotten I googled the launch price of the S9, and S9+ ($720-840)

I will just keep my note 10+, and take my business elsewhere.

Why not just hold off for the price drop a few months down the line?

Apple and google won’t be a million miles away from the same price

I'm a big Android guy, but this S20 does absolutely nothing for me, zero interest. Where's the S12? Naming it S20 is cooler? Uh, ok...

Plus it sort of still looks like the S11, and S10, no ground breaking new design like I expected, especially with a big name change jumping from S11 to S20, would think it would be a radically different phone.

And then Samsung's UI, Lagwiz, or whatever you wanna call it, put lipstick on a pig, it's still bacon, come on. Oh no, it's really better now, I swear it's not Lagwiz anymore, it's so good today. LOL yeah ok... It's still running Samsung spyware, and duplicate apps, that Google already has baked into stock, and Bixby haha

To me Android is all about stock pure Android, a Pixel phone, or OnePlus phone only.

To be fair they are also launching a folding phone, that is rumored to have the holy Grail of flexible glass screen.

There is no denying that Samsung is pushing the industry forward in a way that no other company is.

With these 1400 dollar devices I'm sure OnePlus and even Google are going to follow suit... 999.98 starting price for the OnePlus 8 pro (half joking...)

Where you getting "sort of looks like the S11" from? I must have missed that phone. Maybe S20 because, you know, it's the year 2020. People would moan if they just added a single digit every year.

Lagwiz got old years ago. It's a nothing more than a petty dig, considering they don't lag any more than any other phone out there.

For a regular, non folding phone, when was there ever a truly groundbreaking design anyway?

Galaxy devices are awesome. So are Pixels. What's great about them is that they both run Android but are completely different experiences. I'm most likely going to hang on to the Pixel 4 XL but I'll see what kind of trade-in value it gets. I know Samsung had said something about extra trade-in value if you pre-registered. So if they offer me more than I could sell it for then you never know.

Anyone that says “lagwiz” I just ignore because it shows they’re not capable of original thought or taking in new evidence or facts to make an opinion.

Say what you want about their software, if you’re not a fan and prefer stock I can understand that. But make no mistake, when it comes hardware and specs Samsung will continue to blow all other android manufacturers out of the water. They’re just flexing their muscles at this point. Of the mainstream android phones the Galaxy/Note lines will have the best build quality, best screen, best specs, etc.

If I go by the exchange rate, it will be 2100 NZ, around what the 5G Note 10+ is still selling for here.
I think the exchange rate isn't the only cost factor though.

It's the same old story every release, every year really.
The same old tropes get repeated year after year.
Personally, if I really don't like a product, I won't waste oxygen on it, I'll just ignore it, especially if it does nothing for me.

Ultra phone = ultra price 🤑🤑🤑
This is not the peak of the trend though. Companies will compete who makes the slimmest and lightest phone in the market. So in 2025/2030 expect to pay $3000-$4000.

Long live my Note10+ together until death do us apart 😔.
Don't worry. In 10 months Samsung will release a mid range variant of the Ultra with nearly the same spec and screen size at half the price.

It will be called the Samsung Ultra Lite. 🤷‍♂️

:) they are good coming up with different shapes and sizes.

Seriously though, Samsung is not in position to play the hard ball because first time in years iPhone outsold Samsung in sales so the ball is in our side this time.

There are plenty of people such as myself that wouldn't consider going back to iPhone, and are willing to pay for premium Android phones.

Whether I am willing to pay $1400 remains to be seen.

My question always comes down to, how much better is it than the cheapest alternative that I would still be happy with. For example, I can get a mint Pixel 4 xl for $650 or less. Whether I can justify spending double on the S20 plus or ultra depends on the features, trade ins, and bonuses for preordering.

And is it an $800 better camera? It might not even be better based on my experience with the Pixel 4 XL.

With that said, I'll be watching closely. If they mention post processing upgrades, that could be trouble on my wallet. Lol.

Yeah, cameras arent of upmost importance to me. I have kids so as long as I can point and shoot and get a non-blurry picture most of the time then I am happy. Pixels are best at that by far and I think best for the average user. Hopefully Samsung makes somes strides there. But if the rumored pricing is true, they are going to have to wow me with either the trade-in/add on value or the device itself. Otherwise I'll grab a Pixel and wait until the end of the year to see what else releases and maybe get an S20 then.

While these rumored prices are all TGH (Samsung needs to calm down), I'm not too worried. The inevitable $400 off sales will start by Memorial Day if not earlier. OK...maybe $200 off at first via carrier deals at Best Buy and the like...but the bigger discounts will come. Didn't people start selling the S10+ on Swappa for a few hundred off about a couple months after launch?

Yeah something like that. The big unknown is still the trade-in offers. Samsung has always been good about offering ridiculous value for trade ins. I think last year they gave me $550 off the S10 plus for trading in a $300 S9 I bought used just for that purpose.

Yeah, we'll see. I signed up for pre-order notifications / promos on Samsung's site as well. I paid $500 for my Pixel 4 XL so I'll take a look at trade in deals for sure. As much as I bag on Samsung their screens are just jaw dropping. The Ultra is out for me, but may consider S20 or S20+.

Holy cow. I looked at Swappa for kicks, the Pixel 4 XL 64gb in mint condition is selling between $550 and $575. That's horrible haha, lost nearly half of its value after only 3+ months!

I might pay that amount for a Note. Especially with a trade in discount. But not going to bite for an S series phone at this price.

I didn’t even pay that much for my iPhone.
