Had a quick look at the Ultra today in a local shop. Didn't spend much time as it was tethered down. Obviously it's a big phone but it didn't look too big. Because of the extra height, it looked slightly out of proportion maybe compared to the Note 10+.

The only camera I could see anything with was the front camera. And it definitely looked more detailed.

No way I could judge any phone (for better or worse) from a quick look in a shop though.

I asked my 15 year old if I should change my order to an ultra. She said I always complain when my phones are too big.

I said but then I could smack her with it when she gets out of line. 😬 She then said she could hit me back with her school issued IPad which is in a huge case. She added that in fact, during their active shooter drills, they were told the iPads could be used as shields or thrown at the shooter (not kidding!).

Hmm, interesting to see who wins that S20 Ultra vs Ipad literal smackdown!

It is tough having a preorder in for the S20. There are no real reviews for it like there are for the Ultra. I think it’s because the reviewers are getting sent ultras. Sigh. Samsung wants people like me to get FOMO and order those expensive giant Ultras.

My only worry would be the regular and plus models battery life with 120Hz enabled.
I think it was Jessica Dolcourt who tested that. She stress tested the Ultra battery with that plus 3 hours of gps navigation and photography and her phone lasted uh, 10 hours I think. Let me try and find that video.
it might be in here:

I had two reservations under two different emails and one of them said I had 6 hours left to preorder so I went ahead and bought myself some extra time to make up my mind and preordered the 512 GB S20 Ultra unlocked. I did already buy a clear case for the S20 that’s coming in tomorrow but it was only $5 so I can let that go if I don’t get Pinky.

Only Fingerprint black was available in 512 GB. I was stoked to see I could get the new earbuds as part of the deal. I went with 512 because...well because.

Samsung color science and skin smoothening is better than last year but HOLY OVEREXPOSURE. All of the highlights are blown out. Detail isn’t beating iPhone unless you crop in 3000x.

Video in low light is hella noisy.Expected more from $1400.

I was fine getting the 128Gb version. I’ll happily pay for some cheap storage via SD card.
I probably will, too. Samsung is placing a hold on my S20 Ultra order until the one for Pinky is processed. I just wanted to hold its place because all the terms of the original trade expire in a few hours. I haven’t had enough time to sort through all the reviews and get my final thoughts in order. I’ll probably cancel the S20 Ultra order. But at least it’s there if I decide it’s something I want to do after all. I did make two reservations for that exact contingency.

There is definitely room for improvement and you’re not wrong. But there’s a way to contribute your opinion and information here that could be more conversational and less confrontational. That’s why we are here, to have a conversation about these phones. You’re kind of displaying an “In your face” in tone. That’s not necessary here. A lot of us also have iPhones, too, you know. Or some other Apple product. It’s not an all or nothing proposition. We can and do enjoy all kinds of tech and many different brands.

You are completely over exaggerating. Yes, its is not perfect but as the video said, most of it will likely be sorted in the first camera patch. You ignore all positive points and just enjoy pointing out the negatives, you fail to mention the areas where the Ultra excels and even beats the iPhone. Anyway it doesn't matter as you are clearly just here to stir.

Well it’s sad that for $1400 you get serious flaws like poor dynamic range and 120hz only in HD. Samsung dropped the ball this year.

I personally am pretty underwhelmed by the samples I have seen so far. In a vacuum they are very impressive for a phone.

However when compared to the note 10+ I am not seeing a quantum leap on anything but zoom, which is my least used feature in photography. Even with my mirrorless setup I like to zoom with my feet.

They haven't made much progress in the areas I really don't care for on my note 10, like the washed out video.

There is no denying that Samsung is in the top 3 for top notch cameras this year, but I was really hoping that this would mark a crowning achievement, and instead it is just a modest bump despite the insane hardware.

Running a pixel 4 temporarily, and I am again just blown away by the photos it is capable of. I can only imagine what Google could accomplish with these specs.

Final verdict after being on the fence, is that I am sitting this one out.

Just when I talk my self out of the phone I'm back on board, not for the specs but the physical shape. While it's only slightly more narrow than my iPhone X, together with the profile it feels much smaller in hand and I can reach the opposite side while having a solid grip. This makes me not want the rumored 5.4" iPhone anymore.

A bonus is I get to keep a somewhat large screen and possibly higher specs, assuming the 5.4" is not in their "Pro" lineup and skimping on areas.

Also pink, I love the way it looks in person.

It’s sad for £1,300 I paid for my 11 pro max I still can’t have two apps on the screen at the same time. I’m still stuck with a wall of apps on my home screen and I still can’t get pencil support. I still can’t watch 1440p videos on YouTube.

Just curious as to those wanting to use a pencil on such a small device how ergonomic is it?

I’ve used the S-pen on the galaxy note before and I find the screen to be big enough for taking notes, annotating and colouring. The S-pen on the note 9 and note 10 is even more useful because it can be used as a remote for music and video playback and as a shutter for the camera. I also liked using it for editing photos because it’s a more precise tool than my finger.

I’m not good a drawing but there are plenty of people out there who can do full drawings with the S-pen on a galaxy note.

This lady in particular has a whole YouTube channel dedicated to her drawings on her galaxy note phones throughout the years.

The benefit of having a stylus for your phone is that it’s more accessible than say the Apple Pencil on my iPads. My phone is with me all the time and on the galaxy note the S-pen is stored inside the device. So you can literally pull it out any time you want to make a quick note, do some colouring/drawing and then pop it away. It’s much more convenient than using the pencil even with my iPad mini.
