Now to even imagine the rumor for 2021 iPhone is that the best there will be is just a “ reduced notch “

Yeah it will be a long walk.
Almost unbelievable it has been like this since iPhone X.

The faithful will be adamant that they no longer see the notch.

Until until display camera is ready the notch will remain...maybe by 2022 it will be truely ready

We won’t see it on the S series til 2022

Fully understand Apple’s achilles heel. The years elapsed have left me in no doubt.

In the meantime shall be gallivanting. This Samsung is increasingly becoming tempting.

It's hardly an Achilles heel. Much prefer a notch with Face ID, than no notch and no Face ID. And as much as I love Galaxy S & Notes, I'd much prefer Apple's notch to the stupid (yes, stupid) curve they insist on putting on their top tier phones.

What actual purpose do curved screens serve? Their other flat screen products prove you don't need them for edge panels. Not buying the easier to hold crap either.

Let not these discussions bother you. Please continue with the iPhone.

That's a bit rough, from what I can see, he/she isn't telling you what phone to use.
Quite the opposite, unless I missed something?
Quite the opposite? They clearly told me to keep using the iPhone and not bother with the discussions in here. Because I said I'm more bothered by a curved screen that serves no purpose than a notch that is at least there for a reason.

I interpreted it as keep using your phone and don't let the discussions bother you, not leave the discussion, and not telling you what phone to use.

As for the notch and curved screens, well, their usefulness is down to the user, personally, the notch is a no go for me, I think it looks ridiculously ugly, I don't care about the function, its a hard no.

But millions of others don't care so all power to them.

I've used curved screens for years, the only issue for me is glass screen protectors are fiddly to install.

Anyway, enjoy Xmas, none of these really matters as long as you are happy with what you use.

Haha I can't stand the curved screen fad going on right now lol for some reason they look cheap to me , why does every "ultra" tier flagship for Android insist on doing So? The squared off edges on my 12 Pro Max just screams premium IMO.

I don't like the curved screens, but they make sense on larger phones as they make the phone feel smaller while still preserving screen size. I've brought up this example before, but the Iphone 12 Pro Max feels massive next to the S20 plus even though they are essentially the same size and a lot of this has to do with the width.

Either way, I'm fine with the Ultra being curved as long as it's the curve style form the S20 series and not the extreme curve from the s10 and before.

I don't get why Samsung keep giving the regular and plus models a flat screen and then insist on always making the Ultra curved. Anyone would think they're scared nobody would buy them otherwise. Having the edges of the screen distort does not count as usable space.

I don’t know that it screams “premium” so much as “practical” or “sensible”. Though I do think Samsung did at least finally refine the edge to where it no longer annoys me except for a bit of a glowy halo around the display. Sometimes I can tune that out, but sometimes if my eyes are a bit bothered from allergies it annoys me more.

I’m really looking forward to seeing these released and reviewed. Lol, it’s way too close to Christmas bills and my own Iphone purchases for me to even think about getting one of these for myself. And I’m really loving my 12 mini and 12 Pro Max combo.

But of course I look forward to the new release buzz. That’s always fun.

Yup. And why they decide to retard the smaller model like they did with the Note 20. Absolutely zero sense. Hope they don’t do the same with the S21 models.

The regular Note 20 was seriously gimped, especially for it's price!

Yeah which hasn't ever budged - apart from now with it being like £50 off.
With the introduction of the S20 FE you have to wonder what they were thinking with that regular Note 20. Should have been just like the Note 10 - exactly the same just a smaller model for people who don't want a breeze block.

Got to give it to Apple for introducing the Mini and keeping it in line with the regular 12.

Obviously it comes down to personal preference. The curved screen isn’t very practical IMO but they look aesthetically pleasing. Also there is obviously a trend as all the other android OEMs have started copying.

I prefer a flat screen but I don’t really have an issue with a curved display. If it was as easy to apply a glass screen protector to a curved display I wouldn’t really have a preference.

Still doesn't explain why they never give the Ultra a flat display. You'd think they'd want to keep their line up the same from an aesthetics point of view. Full screen viewing on curved displays will never look as good due to the parts that distort.

To be fair, people have given you possible reasons why they would do it but you've kind of just ignored them.

You have the opinion that the curved edges don't count as usable space but that's not a fact. Personally it doesn't bother me but I agree I would rather it be flat. But as I've stated before, I'm pretty sure Samsung (and other OEMs) do it with larger phones because it allows them to fit a bigger screen in a smaller profile without getting uncomfortably wide.

I assume the notch is still there because they haven't figured how to get around it yet. Maybe they should copy the others? Wouldn't be the first time.
The curved screen does do things when you swipe it to the left. I Just didn't find it useful but some I'm sure use it often. I Just prefer flat screens.

I haven't ignored anything, I'm just questioning why a 0.2" extra screen size has to be curved. It's not a massive difference. And how a curve that distorts images/text displayed on it is genuine usable space.
