I disable the Edge side panels on all my Samsungs. I find it unhelpful.
Ever since they started edge panels I have been disabling them. One of the first things I do.

However I can see the utility in having such an app if it were something I wanted to use.

It is just one of those Samsung software things. Some are really useful and some are just there waiting around until that day when I may need to use it. Lol.

Just got off Beta and it makes me appreciate the work that goes into making OneUI nice and smooth.

The Apps, Contacts, and Calculator have actually become practical features for me. I would really miss them if I were to ever move on from Samsung.
I guess we all get used to different features. I never liked the grey bar which showed when the Edge screen was hidden. Plus it offered me nothing the homescreen doesn't already do. If I want an app it's there on my homescreen and if I want access to my contacts they're in my phone app. I don't need it.

You can actually make the gray bar completely transparent but totally get what you're saying. Different uses!

You know what never stops surprising me? The mighty and humble s pen. Not particularly useful most of the time but when you need to sign documents it is really a lifesaver.

OneUI 5 may not be as slick as Pixel UI or iOS but it is generally very stable. One thing that I have always counted on Samsung is stable software. Sometimes it took forever to get an update and there were always some bugs but they would be taken care of quickly. Now updates are much faster and the quality of the software is still good. I am not saying Samsung is perfect but my personal experience over the years gives them a decent track record. Sometimes we get bored with stability or familiarity but a cohesive design language and reliable functionality are the core of great software.

Congratulations on your new phone I'm sorry to hear that you had issues with the copy over to the new phone.. when you say smart switch Google app did you not use the Smart switch from Samsung? I don't think that app edge panel is set up to go to a single column once you start adding some apps to it... There might be another edge type that you can add by going to the store I will have to look and see if there's one that lets you set up more apps on it..

Thanks @Bkdodger Yes you're right it was the Samsung Smart Switch that didn't launch out of the box initially.
Moreover, even though I selected Wireless transfer on screen (3rd attempt on Day 1) there was mention of removicable just before I started which was really odd to me. Yet on Day 4/5 I clued in that the iPhone Lightning to USB-C cable was required.

Critical for IOS to Android Switchers:
1. iOS saved passwords in Settings > Passwords can NOT be migrated nor auto exported on any iPhone (as of iOS 16.3.1) - you NEED a Mac to do so.
2. Palsskeys are becoming more common - no password will be shown for entries with such within iOS > Setings > Passwords (you cannot export or use the sharesheet either unless you have a Mac/iOS/iPadOS device (Grrrr! I thought this was to be a universal standard and that Apple would MAKE this available as its owned by the END user). You'll need to deleted the passkey first in order to create a password or change on site.
3. iCloud email account : if you used this very frequently as your username for various websites - you should heavily consider changing this before you rid yourself of your iPhone (especialy if you have no iPad nor Mac nor a hosted macOS where your iCloud account is used.
4. Hide Your Email (iOS Relay Service)!
Bollocks ! if you have accounts here be VERY sure FIRST to access the site in Safari, then change your sign in credentials first before toggling the switch to no longer use the service else when you leave this page (iOS > Settings > iCloud > Hide Your Email) it'll be GONE permanently.

Apple NEEDs to do better in terms of allowing the user to keep their credentials and export them from the device directly!

It gets easier, don't worry. There's always a bit of a learning curve.

For the side label, click the settings button shown below. I highly recommend the calculator panel!

Oh there are quite a lot of awesome developer created Edge Panels that I've seen in the Samsung Galaxy store but I'm after the current one that well allows me to swipe twice to get a single column at a time with different list of apps, folders. I've not seen this in about 3yrs.

The August update is now available in UK. I've downloaded it. No idea if the battery life will be any better or worse as it's too soon to tell! I'm not sure I can see a massive difference with the camera processing. To me the 50 and 200MP pictures are still too over processed and colours are too saturated.

I'm not so sure this phone is going to get any more development apart from security and Android updates. The camera is what it is.

Thanks for sharing some of the observations I'm sure they'll be helpful for others moving from iOS to Android.. I've never had to move from iOS completely so I don't really know the nuisances of the copy over..

agreed!

I ended up in a right mess trying to use the "smart"switch, things only got better once I fully reset and did the move manually.

I am the complete opposite :)

I really hate having my home screen plastered with icons, too much like an Iphone LOL. I have 0 on there and my edge panel plus the new dock and notifications is the way I access all my main apps and more often than not I do not even use the edge panel as the new dock carries the main ones and tapping on notification also takes me there

Its precisely having options for all tastes that Samsung cater for that counts :)

Same, other than my dock, I put my favorite apps in the Edge Panel and then used Good Lock to make my app drawer a 7x7, so I only need 2 pages of apps.

How do you take normal night photos without flash or night mode? I can disable the flash easily enough but night mode always comes on and makes the shot abnormally illuminated. How do I stop this?

I'm not sure if it will work for you in this scenario but video tape and hit the pic as it's recording to see if it picks up as you intended

I have 8 apps on my home screen. Rest in app drawer. Never thought it was more effort to just go into app drawer and find app rather than use edge panel and save 3/5 of a second. For my OCD the transparent bar for the edge panel just bothered me aesthetically.

I could probably get away with less than 8 apps too but I don't find it too be cluttered.

I too, hate the way iOS organizes apps. Before Apple adopted app shelf it was just pages of apps in no specific order. Awful.

Night mode should not automatically come on. You will see a half moon. Press it and night mode should turn on.

It may also be shutter speed or iso Samsung is automatically applying. Maybe try changing these settings manually and see if it makes a difference?

Sorted. Pressing the half moon switches night mode off. That was driving me nuts.

Even the app shelf isn't great. The fact you can't organise them how you prefer seems like an odd decision to make by apple
