I'll say this though, this is where Android (Samsung specifically) annoys me in comparison with Apple. We all want faster shutter speed, so why not just bake it in the software instead of giving us an option?

yep it absolutely should be backed into the software but again, choosing a faster shutter speed based on not only the lighting but also a moving subject is different from a "faster shutter press".

I suspect, but have no evidence, that the samsung devs are choosing longer shutter speeds as a general algorithmic approach to give them better night time shots and it's kinda spilt over into too slow shutter speeds in the day.

It's definitely something that could be tuned in software

This reminds me of the old Pentax vs Cannon argument on cameras years back :) (Re aperture priority over shutter) I think sports mode was on the Notes 9/10 then disappeared.

I was playing around the other night after we had those brief few postings on shutter lag and I found my IP14 Pro was no better than my Fold 4 on low light capture of moving objects (My ceiling fan in this case) and the IP14 Pro actually got the colour balance completely wrong

Fold 4 is the bottom 2 showing correct colour of bulb around 3200k warm white where IP14P looks like cool white 6000k bulbs

test shutter.jpg
What I was trying to do after taking 50 photos using each phone was to get the fan blade at 6 o'çlock position within a 30 min tolerance, IP14 P I got 30 and 29 with the Fold 4 :)

yep :)

when they went from manual to auto, they had to make decisions about Aperture v shutter speed, both parts of the same equation and various companies went different ways.

yep makes sense. DSLRs were no different, because without analysing multiple frames, they have no idea if the subject is moving at all. So they look at the light and think mmmmm needs aperture 1.7 speed of 200/s. Whereas another camera says 2.8 and a different shutter speed. Neither is wrong, but each is just a different way of taking the shot. First one may have a smaller depth of field and more blur, second one may show more of the scene in focus but more blur if moving subjects.

I totally get the wish for a fully auto, single press, "just knows what I want" style of camera but I can't say I've ever had that even on the latest DSLRs ! (perhaps with AI improving all the time we'll have that soon)

For what it's worth, my DSLRs are always on aperture priority and usually on either wide open if I want to be all artsy or 2.8/5.6 if I want to make sure to capture everything back to front.

What I'm hoping for with samsung is that Auto works well 90% of the time and the other 10% I'll have a pro raw or other controls to be able to exercise the control I need.

Yep if anything its easier on DSLR's as depth of field behaves with the lens/aperture but with these cameras on phones with binning and computational processing the results are not so linear

totally! and that's what leads our wonderful "social influencers" to click the button and expect perfection every time. I get it I really do but it's a harder problem to solve than people think.

Yep and they seem to have little understanding why there are differences

I would go as far to say they choose subject matter to favor their sponsors as so called blind testings gives a much more varied response to many influencers results

For the mega high price, I would also expect to see a premium camera set up from the Ultra. Samsung may decide to opt for the S22 Ultra cameras which are certainly no slouch in 2023. Samsung effectively have two different flagships with the Ultra & Fold now so both should have the best hardware available.
That mega price is due to not having one AMOLED screen, but two.

And the inner screen folds... that's why Samsung has to compromise on having Ultra camera tech inside the Galaxy Fold. @mjschabow brought up a good point... the price will be ridiculously high if Samsung does that right now.

I think eventually we will get to the point where the inner screen technology won't be too expensive and Samsung can then consolidate with having only one flagship. Because eventually the Fold and S series will converge, the only feature that the Fold lacks is the Ultra camera tech.

Not sure if I’ve just got my case coming tomorrow. I got a text saying my phone is coming early, a Samsung order dispatched email and also one from DPD.

The Samsung email only lists the case but the order number covered both items which were originally due to be delivered on the 17th.

Guess I’ll wait and see what tomorrow brings!

So I just ordered the plain s23 from Google Fi in lavender. $299 to buy the phone. I can sell my s22 plus for around $500. I use the Google Fi service for 4 months and go back to using my $25 Boost plan or maybe I will just keep Fi if I like it.

I just can't afford the Ultra right now and the plus is just not worth it. Plus the 1080p on the smaller display will look better.

I have to wait until March delivery but $299 is a good deal and about what I like to pay for a new phone. Once I get it I will sell the s22 plus and it won't cost me anything.

So I am looking forward to a new Galaxy!

Looking at the video I am glad I didn't try to get the ultra in Lime. The lavender and graphite are the only colors I like. I think the lavender looks more pink but that is okay. I hate boring colors and as a guy I can still rock pink/lavender just fine! I also like that the side rails are color matched.

The flat display should be great for getting a cheap tempered glass screen protector.

Oh and a free storage upgrade to 256gb means that I get the faster storage and ram too. So all in all a pretty sweet deal.

I believe the dates on the exclusive models slipped quite quickly. I'm not sure if that's because they have to be specially made and so it takes them longer to ship them.
