I believe there's a setting in the Watch app on the phone where you can click "mute connected devices" or something like that.

Thanks for that! there's 2 options..... 1. show alerts when phone not in use which was on by default

and 2. mute notifications on phone "phone notifications allowed on your watch will be muted on your phone whilst youre wearing your watch" which is off by default

So I've enabled 2. and let's see if that fixes it :)

This it the thing though, I LOOOVE the customisation but I can't help thinking that the defaults are sometimes silly which may cause people to give up too quickly on the platform

EDIT: yep that fixed it :) still think that should be the default!

Oh for sure. That tends to be my issue a lot. Like why am I all over these settings when my iPhone would already be set up. Add duplicate apps to that and it tends to be a bit more of a jumbled experience at first.

but then someone answers the settings question like you did, I flick a switch and it's all wonderful again :) and I'm back to thinking I could never switch away from this camera system!

I think google/samsung should really come and ask us about defaults.

Haha for sure. I don't even have the phone yet and I'm having anxiety over all the changes. I'll probably play with it for a couple days but I'm pretty sure breaking away from Apple will not happen. Had a couple items that came up today where I realized that I'm more invested in iCloud than I realized. I think that's my biggest hesitation. I don't really care about the watch or MacBook. Whatever. But literally trying to back up all of my files to a new server just seems like too much work.

I miss the notifications though I think that's more just use memory than anything else and I've had 3 people moan about green bubbles on imessage.

Other than that, it's been the occasional sloppy app android version and silly defaults.

what DID surprise me was how easily I got my icloud photo/video library across to google! literally it was login to the apple transfer to another service page, give it my google id/password and hundreds of gigs just moved across without me doing anything.

Right now, in my mind, my 14pm feels like what I'd give to a non-computer person. Something that "just works" but is more limited in what it can do and the s23ultra feels like the power user's phone. Especially when I play with the camera and that really is important to me.

android definitely harder work to get set up though... and not just a little harder either.

and this is usually moment i realise why i tend to use apple... damn it

Ive been using life360 on both apple and android for years, it's my go to family "where are they" app.

I guess it's me being lax about my data but I check in to places with facebook, I frequently post photos to google maps and the other day I looked at where google thought I'd been in the last year without worrying too much about it!

I dunno if it's possible to live my life and still worry about the data being sold really? and given my boring existence, I'm not sure what anyone would do with the data that would worry me anyway. (I know that's not a good attitude but :/ )

Oh wow, I had no clue that there was such a thing to transfer data like that!

There is Google One which is a cloud service just like icloud. I think it is $2.99 a month for 200gb which is the plan I have and you can use it for data back ups of your phone including text's.

As far as transferring data from icloud to Google I personally use both in case I want to go back to an iPhone. Of course you could just download everything to a local source and then upload to Google. A bit time intensive but doable.

FYI

Wow, awesome information and thank you for sharing!

I am going to have to try this out. I will still use icloud as I like to have multiple cloud backups of my digital life but it sure could lower my icloud needs.

I completely agree with this. I have said this for years and there is nothing wrong with either approach.

For some people who are never going to be tech inclined or even care then Apple is a better choice but for those of us who love to get deep into settings, why things work the way they do, file formats, kernels, etc. Android has always been more for power users including installing custom roms. Of course for that you need a Pixel.

I remember years ago talking to someone about the custom firmware on my phone and showing them the difference and them looking at me like I was from a different planet. Lol

I can’t decide if I should keep my Fold 4 or get the S23U. The battery life on the Fold sucks, but I love everything else about it.
I agree, since day 1 of using my Fold4, the 4400 mAh battery life has got gradually worse, I hardly make a full day without a charge.

The S23 Ultra 5000 mAh battery life is proving stellar; I think the longevity must be connected with how the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor works.

Yea, Life360 is great. And also, it gives you the option to opt out of them sharing your data. Google, Apple, etc already have tons of all of our data. I'm not overly concerned about it, never really have though much of it to be honest.

I believe I have all my icloud photos also on Google. Unfortunately I don't have the reverse enabled. So all my Android phone photos are on Google and now some are on OneDrive, but they're not on iCloud. I wish they were.

I use Google Photos exclusively with Amazon Photos as a backup. I never cared for iCloud Photos honestly. The AI is incredible. Yes, I know they are using me for it lol.

Horses for courses though - I prefer the default option of receiving notifications on my watch and my phone.
If I clear the notification on my watch, it also clears it on my phone.

yep that's what android has going for it I guess, more choice as to what we like/don't like.

For me, I didn't like both devices vibrating when a message came in when all I needed was 1 to tell me but hey, at least it caters for both I guess :)
