I forgot to mention when I pixel peeped my kitty pictures the Samsung did much better capturing detail of the texture of the cat bed without resorting to its old oversharpenkng tricks. I actually can't detect over sharpening with the new camera software. The iPhone 7Plus consistently rendered a section of the cat bed with a Monet watercolors painted effect that is an annoying trait of iPhone photography for as long as I can remember.

I think Samsung might need to tweak the camera software to focus better on closeup shots. Or provide better documentation to explain their bokeh effect on close ups because I saw some grouchy customers complaining on their site about blurry close ups. They think they've got a defective camera. After playing around with my camera and my breakfast this morning I think it's actually a feature, not a defect.

I'm going to ask a really stupid question now, but what is the purpose of the under screen home button? I haven't used it once since I've had the phone.

If i need to go back to my home screen i just use the middle touch button. Is there a reason for it being there that I'm unaware of?!
If you have iris scanning enabled, a hard press on the home button when the screen's off (or on the always on display) will wake the phone, unlock using your irises and go straight to the home screen. It's incredibly useful :)

I remapped to the camera but it doesn't work from the lock screen so kind of useless. It says Bixby not set up yet.

Nevermind, i set it up and it works now. Longer delay but better than bixby.

This is sooo useful! I have mine set to facial recognition. It works surprisingly well for me so far. I use iris scanning for Samsung Pay.

You know what would be even better...forgoing the iris scanner altogether and having the phone unlock simply because you pressed the home button and it read your fingerprint. Oh wait, that's already possible...;) (tongue firmly planted in cheek).

In all seriousness, it seems like a great alternative, quick unlocking solution since the FP sensor is on the back, something that would've improved the experience on the Pixel. I just really hope both Apple and Samsung (on the Note 8) can successfully implement the under-display sensor since I still find I prefer the ease of using the FP sensor in a front placement for all the things (device unlocking, app authentication, tap-to-pay, etc).

Even though that was a tongue in cheek statement, you can do that too - just touch the fingerprint scanner and it unlocks to the home screen (including from AOD or screen off) :)

Anyone having any luck with Smart Lock based on location? It does not work at all or very sketchy at best. I have it set to smart unlock at home and work but it's constantly asking for my irises. Perhaps I have a setting off that isn't allowing it to work? I can't get this to work.

Not if it's sitting on the table/desk, as mine is right now while I work. I use my phone in this position all the time so having to pick it up to unlock it would annoy me. Of course, my use case isn't everyone's use case, so I won't profess it as the best implementation, just the implementation that's best for me. A variety of security options is great---it just doesn't include the one that I prefer. The rumored under-screen implementation on the Note 8 would go a long way's towards encouraging me to give that phone a try.

I think you missed that part about iris scanning....facial recognition........then the FPS. By all rumors I have read here on MR Apple might be moving the FPS to the back as well :D.

I'm aware of all of them, and all of them still don't fit the use case I've mentioned. All involve either picking the phone up to reach around the back for the FPS, or hold the phone in a position to utilize the iris scanning or facial recognition. As mentioned, I use my phone a lot while lying on a flat surface and couldn't do the same as easily on an S8.

And I'm aware of the rumors as well. I'm already not likely to purchase the latest iPhone due to it's size (or more specifically, he lack of size ;)) and even if I was considering it, a rear FPS placement would make this less likely.

Again, I understand my needs are very specific to me and necessarily don't apply to many people. Samsung has gone to great lengths to accommodate a wide variety of possible use cases---they just haven't met mine, is all I'm saying. And if Apple does the same with their new phone, it'll be the same scenario.

You also have the option of smart lock based on location, attached bluetooth devices or voice, which should pretty much cover every eventuality.

Yeah but to be honest that one very narrow use case doesn't fit what was outlined as well. Then as in every change there is a learning and adjustment stage. I use the front facing FPS on my 7+ just as you described. But then on my Pixel XL and S8+ I can just pick up the phone......its not complicated or hard or difficult. I don't even notice it to be honest. The FPS on the S8 works really well. Don't really like the placement next to the camera to be honest. Much prefer it to be round and lower under the camera.
I have used so many phones that FPS on the front or back is not something that would prevent me from enjoying or using a phone. It certainly would not make me hesitate about getting a phone just based on FPS placement.
Then as the original post this started from.....there are more options to unlocking the S8 than just the FPS.

Oh and most of the time when I do use the front FPS on my 7+ while it is lying flat on my desk....i end up picking it up anyway to respond to the notification that prompted me to unlock it in the first place.

As a smart watch wearer are you not covered by trusted devices for example (with the right watch) in addition to trusted places etc

Seems there are some options still left for you that actually make it easier

Ditto I just flip the case open to see if it's worth picking up

Are you able to remap it to sound profiles with that app?
Here are the options to remapping the bixby button

Can't wait to read all the complaints about it because I am one of the people who don't mind a rear FPS. Samsung didn't execute it properly. LG and Huawei have though. It's not a "big ugly hole" that iFans complaint about. It's better to have one there with a primary biometric security measure on the front. The Note 8 might have a FP sensor underneath the glass, thus further infuriating the fruit logo supporters.
