I don’t think they have painted themselves into a corner. If they can do Touch ID under the screen along with Face ID, they can say it’s the most secure phone ever with a 2 factor security system, needing both a fingerprint and Face ID. So even twins won’t be able to open each others phone.

Can’t wait for the Note 9, looking good as far as getting rid of those top and bottom bezels, come Samsung, embrace a notch and go completely bezel less.
Oh I don’t know if they should embrace the notch. It’s hardly bezelless more like a punk version of a bezel. Or a receding bezel. :p

I do think Apple would be more than willing to walk back their words or ignore themselves altogether once they master Touch ID under glass. After all they dissed Qi charging but here it is.

It’s just a shame they said anything at all about Touch ID. Just keep quiet and release it when it’s ready. I’m tired of Apple people acting like they’re setting one course and then having to walk it all back. It wouldn’t be necessary if they would say only the bare minimum necessary to sell their product. But we get Jony dissing LCD displays three years before they are ready to go to OLED. Now we hear them say that Face ID is the future and Touch ID under glass was never a thing. Just don’t say anything.

They used to be good at keeping quiet and just getting on with things and not letting anyone know what direction they were going in until they were ready to take us there. Face ID being as good as it is was a nice surprise.

As an iOS user I hope they surprise me with Touch ID in the display, too. But if they don’t, fortunately I also use Android and am comfortable in the Samsung eco system too. And Pixel. I refuse to box myself into a corner ever again as a consumer.

Wait until they roll Face ID out to other products. One rumor was it will be coming to iPads soon. Can you imagine holding a big ipad up to your face?
Now it would be cool and a big iMac to just look at it to unlock it....no passwords needed.

I like the notch, it gives a space to put the status bar without taking up screen real estate while making devices smaller (shorter).

I get it, that ideally all those sensors would go underneath the screen and there would be no notch or bezel, but we aren’t there yet. I would much rather have no top bezel with a notch than no notch but some top bezel.

On an iMac it would be awesome, even on MacBooks too. Most surprising for me is how convenient Face ID is when logging into my bank or using passwords in safari. Really cool when I open my banking app for it to just automatically log me in without even having to press the fingerprint sensor, it just looks at my face and logs me in.

Not sure how the current one would work on iPad, it seems to work well even at a distance and angle on my iPhone (much better than iris scanners), but not sure if that would still be a comfortable distance on the iPad.

My thoughts too...desktop and laptops would be a great fit for Face ID....but maybe iPads not so much right now....especially the larger one.

Apple tends to move features or design cues to iPads later. For instance they still have the chamfer edges and 1st gen touch ID if im not mistaken. EDIT: current iPad pros have 2nd gen Touch ID actually.

I noticed the same thing. I did a comparison at the store with the S8, the X has a larger display actually. Its 5.8" without Notch and 5.85" with it.

The notch actually kills space. As for the status bar, better not to even have one. Full immersive is the way to go. Just swipe down if you wanna see the status bar. I even remove the navigation keys for max real estate.

It would kill space if it actually ate into the 5.8" screen. Its just extra on top that makes it 5.85".

I'm not surprised by the latest reports pushing back the January date. They've been saying for years that the new Galaxy phones will come out earlier than normal... and then they revert course back to the normal timeframe. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

LMAO ... FPS has nothing to do with music or wired headphone use. Do you really think it'll stop Android or Samsung fans/users from complaining and hailing down fire and brimstone like they did for Apple on the iPhone 7 debut? I think yes they'll stop from complaining ONLY and SIMPLY because Samsung has decided to do this (3.5mm analog jack removal) and their the elephant in the mobile smartphone space. If they do this then sianara or put up with it. That's that.

Heavily underpowered with multi-core score.

Beyond the stats I think Samsung will make a HUGE play with the Exynos CPU ... maybe having it ship default across the globe. Now THAT would be something.

I SINCERELY hope this happens because it'll send shockwaves across the market:
Samsung can be a premier mobile cpu & chipset manufacturer, custom silicon (like they are for RAM and other chips)
Qualcomm stock will take a huge dip - especially in valuation and get Broadcom's buyout to occur - no more poison pill from majority stake shareholders that just cannot see a great deal happen.
Gives Apple's internal ASIC design team a real run for their worth - less complaining about Campus II office space/design and really heat up the competition. Their great to be very honest but man if their shown up head ot head ... we're in for a great treat: notebooks and laptops using ARM based CPU's (RISC based once again).
Indeed.

I mean look at the Galaxy S8 and Note8, the Exynos variants are capable of 4K@120FPS Encode and Decode, but due to Samsung having to use Snapdragon in the USA which is not capable of such, they had to limit the Exynos variants to 30FPS to.

Now Apple looks like the ones who are ahead in this, but an older Exynos chip was capable of far more. Really frustrating.

Just offering an opinion here, but it seems to me that Samsung is content to offer one-fourth of whatever Apple is offering in storage. They were fine offering 16GB on the S4 when Apple was offering 64GB. They finally offered 32GB on the S5 when Apple started offering 128GB. Now I’m n the S8 they offer 64GB when Apple pushed up to 256GB.

I will never 7nderstand Samsung’s approach to storage. I would have thought they would have at least stayed on par with Apple just to negate the premium Apple charges of storage and to offset the bloatware Samsung and its carrier partners insist on loading on their phones.
Hold on right there. This is all down to region.

The last time I owned a 16GB Samsung was the Galaxy S2. My Galaxy S3 and S4 were both 32GB models.

They stuck with 32GB for too long.

What is great is that you can expand the memory though, with 128GB and 200GB MicroSDs becoming dirt cheap and when you get these phones on some deals you can even get them with a 256GB MicroSD.

This comparison, unfortunately has been made and held pretty much as the end-all-and-be-all for dividing Android users from iOS/iPhone users for at least 5yrs (2008-2013) at least until we then began to see Android manufacturers stop offering expandable on-device local storage. We're all aware that initially how Android OS (prior to 6.0) treated expandable storage vs iOS yet even that is now more a moot point and in Android end-user configurable.

The real discussion between the two platforms is this:
Which storage implementation is FASTER both by the end user and the OS and Applications?
Which storage implementation is faster to onboard CPU and RAM?

PS: @Breaking Good, Apple barely beat out Samsung with 64GB by 8mths (7 if you include almost a full month before shipping globally by Apple back in 2011). The take away point here is Android had ability to expand up to 64/128GB MORE than iOS could (including no 3rd parties then).

I think the plus version will get 6gb for sure. I mean really, the Note 9 will be the S9+ with perhaps a fps under the display.

Note9 will probably a lot more than that e.g.
- Camera improvements
- Larger Display
- Indeed FPS under the Display
- SPen Software improvements over the Note8
- Possibly more RAM to

Anyway that's a whole other thread on its own.

It's Samsung's notch, I can't see it going, imo.
It doesn't bother me at all, I'll take the edge over a notch.
You're so right......I think it will stay with their flagship phones for the time being.

Same here, the edge doesn't bother me anymore now that they've got the accidental input pretty much sorted out.

I like the edge on the Note 8... Its not quite as aggressive as the S8. I also like the idea of no bezel on the bottom and a thin one on top for the cameras and such. I hate the notch, so hopefully Samsung doesn't decide to do that.
