Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Show Up at FCC Already

In terms of timing, this seems incredibly early when you look back at the S8, Note 8, and even the S7 and Note 7 FCC certifications. The S8 showed up at the FCC in March 2017 and then went on sale in April. The Note 8 showed up at the FCC in July 2017 and then went up for sale at the end of August. The Galaxy S7 showed up in February 2016 and then went up for sale in March. And finally, the Galaxy Note 7 showed up in July 2016 and then went up for sale in August. Seeing a pattern here? Samsung sends its phones for FCC approval and then begins selling them a month later.

Wouldn't be surprised with a February release. I think Samsung smells blood with the recent bad press Apple is getting for slowing down phones intentionally. And with iPhone sales not as high as expected. Expect a barrage of Android commercials hitting Apple for intentionally slowing down phones.
I’m probably going to sit this generation of Galaxy S’s out, since my S8+ delivers what I want from the Samsung experience and I’m interested in Pixels right now, but I’ll follow everything about them with interest.

Apple needs to watch out. I just had my first absurdly wretched experience with customer service at an Apple Store and I wasn’t alone. There was a woman there before I arrived who was positively seething about something. I’ve been going to this particular store for going on a decade and never saw anyone look anything other than happy there.

Also, I returned my X, which was, save for my difficulties adjusting to the display due to pwm flicker, one of my favorite iPhones ever. But I know it’s got some weaknesses like exceedingly high cost of purchase and repair, only one biometric unlock method when Samsung and others offer 2 to three, and the controversial notch. I was also disappointed with the battery life and lack of a dark mode for iOS that could have helped with that.

I would love love a February release......but kinda wary of that. We seem to be right here every year hoping for an Feb and they release in March

Well it’s the report every year, the previous model didn’t sell as well as expected so Samsung are going to rush release the next S phone. Never happens though.

I'm going for the Huawei if this design is true.

Really looking forward to this one. I know it's the same design as last year but the dual cameras and better FP sensor alone have me excited.
Those are the two things I wish my S8+ had, so I'm looking forward to this one as well. However, even though getting it on day one would be enticing, it seems like Samsung flagships start coming with quite lucrative deals rather quickly, so I think I'll hold on to this S8+ while waiting for the prices to come down a bit. For after all, Samsung's Finnish site still offers the S8+ with its original 929€ retail price while carriers and retailers have pretty much settled on 799€ lately. There are occasional deals as well and I bought mine in October from such a deal for just 599€, so I think I'll be waiting for something similar before pulling the trigger on the S9 :)

For which option would you choose. I would go for option 4.

No notch !

And iphone (X) bezels are huge. Those look much smaller. I would bet that the display/screen ratio is better on the S9

Considering the S8/S8+ already have a better screen to body ratio than the IPX, the S9/S9+ will no doubt be slightly better. All gravy from here. The only thing I really wish Samsung did was to put the Exynos 9810 on all models. Last year the Exynos had the ability to do video recording and playback of 4K at 60fps, but the snapdragon was not able to do the same, so the Exynos models were gimped. This year the new Exynos 9810 is capable of video recording and playback of 4K at 120fps, and the Snapdragon is now at 4K at 60fps. I highly doubt Sammy will allow the Exynos models to get 4K at 120fps while the Snapdragon guys get left with 4K at 60fps. So it will be a little bit of a let down to see this happen again this year, if it does indeed happen. For me, the hardware and design is already at a peaked level (until fold-able designs), I'm now more interested in seeing the advancement in the software.

I think there's too little, I don't really get the whole bezel obsession since it means you're more likely to accidentally touch something when gripping your phone.
My thoughts too. I still want some bezel to hold onto the phone!

Having gone the iPhone X to the Pixel 2XL, I happen to like a little bezel (and no notch), so the S9 looks like perfect compromise - if only it ran stock Android.

Having used both stock Android devices in the form of multiple different Nexus phones plus a couple of Samsungs, I have to say that while I definitely appreciate the cleaner design and faster updates of Nexus (and nowadays Pixel) devices, I've had multiple occasions where a Nexus update has broken Bluetooth in one way or another. So while Samsung updates are somewhat delayed, they tend to be a little more stable.

I have no problem with waiting for updates, if they are stable. Apple has started going through 3-4 point releases after updates to fix things. Why not just wait a couple months and get it right?

Yep, for feature updates I would be perfectly OK with that. I just wish I'd get security updates faster.

Why? Have you heard of a case of someone's phone being compromised because of not having a security update yet? That is a genuine question, because I've not heard of this?
Well most Android security compromises come from sideloaded apps instead of exploiting the latest vulnerability, but due to working within security-conscious development, I can't help feeling uneasy about having publicly known vulnerabilities unpatched on my phone even though I'm aware that the platform offers additional protections against exploiting those vulnerabilities. I'd prefer having them fixed without additional delays.

I actually had to wait before taking this S8+ into active use after purchasing it as Samsung was slow with the BlueBorne fix rollout and I just didn't want mess around with wired headphones, but I also didn't want to take unnecessary risks in crowded public transit.

People wanting the latest updates the fastest has very little to do with security. We live in a world where people don't like to wait and want things NOW and if something better is out there and we don't have it, we are not happy! lol

Rarely will someone be hurt by not having the latest security update but it just kills people to not have something that others have.

Nice generalization there. At least I'm not in a hurry to get Oreo, but I'd like it if security updates were actually monthly.
