All of the extra Google services like hangouts, YouTube and such...
The profile sharing you can't turn off. It' not The biggest deal though. I kind of miss apples simplicity.
but Apple turns those things on for you too....they just don't show you. Like Bluetooth on the new X...if you turn it off in the control center......Bluetooth is till on. You have to go into settings to turn it off.

Yeah that's so backwards. More people talk about Apple stuff more often so it's easier to pin point and correct after software updates.

Ah. You are a technophobe.

Go into contacts. Select yourself.
You will see an option under your name and photo for profile sharing. Turn it off.

As for youtube or hangouts, simply disable them in /apps.

Top tip for tech: read the instructions before you use a device. You are not a wizard so don't have the abillity to know everything. Smartphones are not alien tech so they are unaware you are not a wizard.

Best way to learn about the phone is:
A) Youtube. (Its a video site)
B) Go through the settings and sub settings menu of the phone. This is also a good idea for any new apps you might have downloaded.

Best of luck!
I did all of that. Didn't even like being signed up for it all randomly in the first place.
[doublepost=1511711181][/doublepost]Puddled maybe you can help me fix something. I went across Google and updated a photo image.
I can see if on my play store account and online in my Google account.
However let's say I send myself an email or another person an email... the little letter icon that pops up where you can delete the email if you touch it or open the email (which ever) it still only displays a letter not the picture icon....
How can I have this icon change from the random letter to a picture?

Are you talking about your google account picture? Which is used by google to identify you and others?

Firstly, make sure your picture is actually saved. You can sign into G+ and it should pop up straight way as your main profile picture.

Assuming it is all ok, open a web page on your phone, go to gmail and sign in. Open up the email you sent yourself and you should see your profile picture.

If you don't, then its a server side issue. If you do, go back to your phone and make sure everything in your google account is syncing. And that your account is set to push.

That should work?

Just a heads up to everyone.

Yes the note 8 is a great phone, but beware if you buy from Samsung directly, and want to return.

I bought the wife a Note 8, unlocked. The phone was having all sorts of problems, and a factory reset didn't fix it. It also was struggling with wifi calling, mainly sms & mms, on T-Mobile (likely due to being the unlocked version). I was going to try and trouble shoot the problem, but the wife got frustrated and got herself a Pixel Xl 2.

I sent the note 8 back within 6 days of purchasing it. The Note 8 was/is in pristine condition (I have the pictures to prove it).

They denied the return (but accepted the return of the bonus accessories). They gave me no reason for the denial, and the Samsung reps couldn't tell me the reason.

After a few calls, I was told by the reps that the phone wouldn't be sent back to me. Then, when the I got a notification that the phone was coming, they told me to accept it and they would send me a return label. They said that it was all a big mistake, etc, etc.

The phone came back, with a slip stating that the phone was damaged. Again, I have the photos to prove it is fine.

So when I got the phone, I called them back. One rep said that it was "out of their hands", I "may or may not get a return label" depending on the warehouse's discretion, "its now past the return policy", and that "there is nothing they can do". I asked for a manager, got put on hold for an hour, and disconnected. The next rep told me that "I should get the label", and that "there must of been a mistake"...essentially the complete opposite.

I financed through Samsung, thus I don't really have a credit card company to fall back on.

As such, I have no idea what will happen, and just have to wait "4-5 days" to find out. I might get a return label, or I might be stuck with a $1000 phone. Also, as a side note, they received the return on the 6th of November, and didn't reject it until the 23rd of November.

Contrasting this experience with my recent experience with Apple, it is night and day.

To make a long story short, I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile. My iPhone 8 plus (I have an X now) was bought from Apple, and completely paid off. Somehow, sprint locked the phone when I left the carrier. Apple couldn't carrier unlock the phone, and Sprint wouldn't help me since I closed my account. The iPhone 8 plus had been purchased almost 2 months ago. This wasn't Apple's fault, but they gave me a FULL refund anyway.

Again, night and day.

I won't be buying from Samsung again, which is unfortunate. Hopefully the situation is resolved, but no matter the outcome, I have learned my lesson.

Sorry to hear about all this. I’ve found it’s very hit or miss when buying directly from OEMs. Had a good experience with HTC, but a miserable one with OnePlus.

What you’re describing is one of the advantages with Apple that people too easily dismiss. Their prices are premium but there’s also and entire infrastructure dedicated to customer service. Samsung needs to do better. Any OEM charging premium prices should at the very least offer a very clean return process.

So yes I open it up and I do see the image I have saved.
However in the gmail email app I'm still getting the letter icon/image.

That is a nightmare of an experience for returning the phone. I hope that Samsung will learn from Apple.

Okay so I learned from this forum that WiFi calling is not enabled on the unlocked phones because it is done via the carriers. I wish they explicitly explain it. Now I do wish Samsung will streamline its experience like Apple and iMessage should be the default message app on all phones.

There are a few things that iPhone and iOS does very well that Samsung / Android lacks. However that note 8 have a few feature that can be nice as well. That is a hard decision

Here's another thing I noticed when I go to send an email it doesn't display my first and last name it instead displays me email address....
Although when I receive the email I seem my first and last name.
I' sure since it's displaying my email address is why it's not showing up.

So broke out the old iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and downloaded the yahoo app and gmail and everything displays like it should via those 2 apps on my iPhone. For some reason it doesn't do it on the gmail and Yahoo apps on the note 8 or maybe it's just delayed. Still getting the random letter icon. When I email myself via gmail to my gmail I see my image. When I do it via to an alternate address I see my initials. Weird it doesn't work on the actual note 8 through hoping it'l update itself or maybe it could be that's just how it works....

I picked an open boxed set of Hifiman HE400S planars from Amazon that was in mint condition. I listened for about an hour and all I can tell you is I do not know what DAC the Note 8 uses but I got eargasms. Unbelievable.

Planar magnetic headphones are great, i have the Hifiman HE400 originals. They need alot of power though, the Note 8 is not even close to getting the best out of them.

iMessage is proprietary Apple. It will never be on anything but Apple gear. The problem is not iMessage, it's the fallback of SMS/MMS that is how it communicates with other devices. That is sorely out of date. The industry needs to develop a replacement for that and then every user could use whatever messaging app they want and be able to interoperate.

Just a follow up to this saga.

I tried contacting their support via twitter. After several messages, Samsung super told me I would need to contact their eCommerce team.....whom which I have been in contact with multiple times. I’m still hopping they will hold up their promise of getting a new return label, but I am not optimistic.

As a side note, don’t compare Samsung to Apple, customer service wise, if you contact their Twitter team. Their response to that, for me, was aggravated at best. Apparently you “can’t compare” these two companies because they “are different”.

Alright....

Thought about a dac but I think it would be overkill for me really, the Note 8 drives them well enough. They are low impedence headphones so one can get by without a dac. Besides, that is another piece in the chain for connection I rather not concern myself with.

I'm sorry you are having such a tough time. I think as others have said, its always best to buy through a retailer vs. directly from an OEM... with Apple being the one exception since they have retails stores and have excellent support and customer service. Its something to consider when making a buying decision for sure. I bought mine from the AT&T store, and expect that if something like this arose, I'd have some leverage with them since they don't want to lose me as a subscriber.

Let us know how it turns out.

I know, I know that about iMessage. I think it's about time they revamp SMS/MMS (I never liked MMS). We need a solution like iMessage to work on all Android devices inherently OR something that works cross platform that does not rely on 3rd party.
