I like that they didn't color match the finger print sensor, looks less ugly when it's all one solid rectangle.

This is Note 8 (6.3-inch) vs iPhone 8 (5.8-inch) front panel. Jesus, the Note 8 is massive. Anything taller than the iPhone 6/S/7 Plus or Nexus 6P is too damn big for me! No way I'd go back to phones that big.

I wonder how much of that 5.8 display is going to be usable? Is there going to be a function bar of some kind? There might only be 5.2 or 5.5 of usable display and even less if they do manage to get the FPS under the display area.

Looks like a woman attempting to escape from a man and her sole remaining option is to dive into the ocean.
I am so glad I wasn't drinking or eating anything when I read your post or I would have choked from bursting out laughing. You are so right! Yikes!

That Note 8 glass next to the alleged IPhone 8 glass doesn't look right. It looks too curved compared to other leaked photos and renders I've seen in which the edges are sharper so the display looks a bit flatter. It looks so much like the S8's curves. Sadly, that's not my cup of tea, especially for a display meant to be written on. I suppose that's more of a psychological aversion on my part than a practical one. But it is what it is.

Edit...never mind, the glass does look right when I bother to take a second look and compare. Still not my ideal, but oh well.

I'm guessing same as a lot of other folks that if there's a function bar, it goes away depending on the app being used.

Valid questions. Others have wondered the same. Take a look at this thread where I posted about possible software ideas for dealing with both the top status bar and bottom navigation pane (potentially the "function bar"): https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...to-android-2016.2022209/page-61#post-24862352

While I agree it sucks that Apple is only offering one size of the iPhone 8 (again, a little bizarre to launch both an iPhone 7S and an "8" in the same year, but whatever!), I actually think the function bar is going to give iOS a huge helping in keeping navigation consistent. And it doesn't have to compromise much of the usable screen. Take a look at that link.

And once Apple can get OLED yields up to par, they can release an iPhone 8S and 8S Plus in 2018 to give people back the option of a larger screen.

It's probably not going to be called "iPhone 8". Probably something like "iPhone Pro" or whatever.

I am just speculating, But this year will be the iPhone Edition, 7s and 7s Plus will be phased out after this generation.
in 2018 we will get the iPhone Edition Pro with the 120Hz ProMotion Display from the iPad Pro to enable VR you need a high speed high refresh rate display.

I would not be even a little surprised if Apple phased out numbers in the device's title.

I've been hoping and parting for this

The 7s and 7s Plus lines get Renamed IPhone Edition this year 2017

And the IPhone 8 is actually named the IPhone Pro.

Now in 2018 the IPhone Edition S is the 5.8" OLED unit just updated (the 7 lines is phased out no more numbers)

And the one I really want is the 6.3" OLED IPhone Pro with 120hz Promotion display.

So you are left with. iPhone Edition (being the smaller device) and the iPhone Pro (the larger device)

There is presidence for this.

In 2016 I bought and iPad Pro 9.7" and in 2017 Apple quickly phased it out and released the 10.5" iPad Pro with 120hz Promotion display.
So my 9.7" iPad Pro is still Pro there's just a Way better Pro now.

Hey if Samsung can jump from the Note 5 to the Note 7 in 11 months, Apple can do better. Marketing wise it would be great. Hey guys let me show you my new iPhone Pro .......Whaaat!

This is what I'm hoping for as well, i.e. how it's done with their computers. We don't call it the 'MacBook Pro 4' or 'iMac 3'. Just call it by the product's name and reference it with the year for additional clarification if needed. For instance, my MBP is the '15" MBP (late 2013)'.

Yeah you don't say I have a Honda Accord 9. You say I have a Honda Accord.

I doubt that would happen. Numbers have a psychological effect on many consumers. That's just the way it is with smartphones, even back when dumb phones were in. I can only imagine how many people went from a 6S to a 7 without knowing a damn thing about the 7 besides the fact the it's better cause it's a 7. And especially nowadays since more and more people are on Apple's upgrade financial program or leasing from a carrier. Manufacturers know damn well numbering smartphones is an enticement for many consumers to upgrade.

That's somewhat muted but I generally can't stand gold. I'm debating what I like less: gold or how gross the back of the midnight black becomes. It's times like this where I wish I was born a case person.

Easy solution, just apply a wrap. You get scratch protection, increases grip, no more fingerprints and you still can see the beautiful stock color.

The Note 8 looks awful, I can't believe it's really going to be that tall. It would have been so much better if they stuck to 6.0" and left it at 16:9, or even a bit of narrowing like 17:9. How the heck is anyone going to use that one handed is beyond me.

my feelings too.....make it 16:9 and 6 inches. Then it won't be too narrow and too tall. How will anyone reach the FPS at the projected aspect ratio?

They just did it with their iPad line.

Not as much as you think. Far more often than not, when someone shows me their iPhone or iPad and I ask what model they have, they have no idea. The follow up question from them is then usually, 'How can you tell?' or 'I bought it X years ago'.

They just did it with their iPad line.

Yup. My guess is that the new iPhone will have a new name, i.e. iPhone Pro and the iterations of the 7 will either be called just iPhone or iPhone 7S for the final transition away from numbering and next years lower tier model will just be called iPhone. Doing so would create consistency across all their product lines (MacBook vs MacBook Pro, iPad vs. iPad Pro--hell, even iMac vs. iMac Pro) and the only different icon in models will be display size and model year.

I think one handed use is no longer a thing for many people since the phablet was introduced. Lots of users out there that can't even use a 5.5 inch phone with one hand. And considering the Note in particular has that S Pen, one handed use is not at the top of the list of it's purpose. Can't use the SPen one handed. But I hear what your saying for the ones that still have one handed use at the top of their list. This simply just isn't the phone for those users. That being said, I'll be getting this bad boy on launch. :)

Forgive me if this has been asked or the answer should be obvious but will the Note8 fit into the Gear VR?

The one thing i wish Apple would do is make the Apple Pencil support the iPhone, the Note series has a great ability to do things with the S-Pen, what's always put me off is Samsung's OS, their lack of regular updates (including security one's) but if Apple did a Note style phone i would be all over it. Even as an Apple fan i have to give credit where it's due and the Note series deserves it (along with the design of the S8)

I would have to say no. The S8+ fits with absolutely no room to spare, so anything slightly taller is too big. Samsung will most likely introduce another Gear VR and offer it free as a promotion.
