I thought about this a lot over the last few hours, and I think I'm going to drop the Note 8 in favor of the iPhone 8 (at least based on the rumors, and based on my assumption that this will be a sub-$1000 phone w/ the base specs config (or 256 GB if it's still sub-$1000). My main reasons for the Note was the gorgeous screen and Samsung Pay, but I've noticed that I've been using S-Pay less and less, given that I've been doing most of my transactions online rather than in stores. In all honesty, I don't like the iPhone 8 design. I really love Samsung's screen edge design, but the amount of lag I've experienced in my S7E (Exynos) has been infuriating and really pushing me off the side. With the purchase of the iPhone, there is a possibility I'll get an Apple Watch as well for general purposes just to settle myself into the ecosystem properly, leaving my Huawei Watch 1st gen for more "formal" events since the latter looks far more nicer. What I think I'll miss the most about the Note 8 is experiencing Samsung's magic with the dual cameras. I'm really hoping that Apple will be introducing newer camera tech for the iPhone 8 specifically, but it's going to be interesting to see how that compares to the Note 8. The recent rumors point to 4k at 60fps and 1080p at 240fps so that may point to a better camera, but I am expecting a better camera than the 7s/7s+ as a bare minimum to make the jump.
I don't think highly of the locked-down experience Apple creates with iOS especially with something as basic as the app layout, but you win some, you lose some. Also, not looking forward to Siri and Home (the Home app on my parent's iPhone 6s+ fails to detect some of the lights the Hue app detects and Siri is useless when it comes to turning on lights for me; but I use Alexa for voice-home-automation so ...). Battery life on my S7E is also failing. It's 4:30 PM right now. I left the house at 11:30 AM with a 97% charge, and got home at 3:30 PM. I only used Waze (about an hour total) and PowerAmp (constantly, love that app sooo much), and Bluetooth for my Airpods, I'm at 16% now.
One thing I can say for sure about the iPhone is it's battery life is really great. I sometimes miss the 6+ I had because of it's awesome battery life. Anyway, that's just some thoughts I've been having. $1000 for a phone is a lot to justify, and as we get closer to both products' announcements, I think my vision will be a bit more clearer. Hopefully, I can become Samsung's guinea pig for the Note 8, but yeah, those are some of my thoughts that have been rolling around in my mind for the past few days.
