Honestly given they have tinkered with the camera lens array, it's strange that they haven't rectified the one thing that was universally criticised .... I assume by S9 it will either be under the screen or at least in a better position on the back.

I know folks have suggested they couldn't put the fingerprint reader below the camera because of the battery, however given almost 'every' other OEM who has a fingerprint reader on the back below the camera sensor can do it and have similar batteries capacity wise, it's seems unfeasible to me that Samsung couldn't have solved this themselves too.
Haven't they separated the camera and the fingerprint reader by putting that stupid heart rate monitor in between?

The FP reader is still ridiculously too high but at least you won't smudge your camera lens this time.

I see the Note line as a direct followup to whatever the S line does, plus some notable new features (IRIS scanning in the Note 7, and dual cameras in the Note 8). I have a feeling the decision they made for the S8 carried through to the Note 8, thus we see the FPS location unrectified.

I'm pretty sure they can redesign the innards and reposition the FPS scanner to a better location if they wanted to. As you've pointed out, other OEMs can.

I posted an earlier rumor that predicts we won't see FPS under the display until the Note 9. Maybe that'll be the standout feature for the Note 9. What that means for the S9, not sure, but I do hope it's rectified by then, especially for the larger model. Who knows, maybe Samsung risks it for one more year with the S9 since it is less egregious cause they are smaller models than the Note.

I thought about this a lot over the last few hours, and I think I'm going to drop the Note 8 in favor of the iPhone 8 (at least based on the rumors, and based on my assumption that this will be a sub-$1000 phone w/ the base specs config (or 256 GB if it's still sub-$1000). My main reasons for the Note was the gorgeous screen and Samsung Pay, but I've noticed that I've been using S-Pay less and less, given that I've been doing most of my transactions online rather than in stores. In all honesty, I don't like the iPhone 8 design. I really love Samsung's screen edge design, but the amount of lag I've experienced in my S7E (Exynos) has been infuriating and really pushing me off the side. With the purchase of the iPhone, there is a possibility I'll get an Apple Watch as well for general purposes just to settle myself into the ecosystem properly, leaving my Huawei Watch 1st gen for more "formal" events since the latter looks far more nicer. What I think I'll miss the most about the Note 8 is experiencing Samsung's magic with the dual cameras. I'm really hoping that Apple will be introducing newer camera tech for the iPhone 8 specifically, but it's going to be interesting to see how that compares to the Note 8. The recent rumors point to 4k at 60fps and 1080p at 240fps so that may point to a better camera, but I am expecting a better camera than the 7s/7s+ as a bare minimum to make the jump.

I don't think highly of the locked-down experience Apple creates with iOS especially with something as basic as the app layout, but you win some, you lose some. Also, not looking forward to Siri and Home (the Home app on my parent's iPhone 6s+ fails to detect some of the lights the Hue app detects and Siri is useless when it comes to turning on lights for me; but I use Alexa for voice-home-automation so ...). Battery life on my S7E is also failing. It's 4:30 PM right now. I left the house at 11:30 AM with a 97% charge, and got home at 3:30 PM. I only used Waze (about an hour total) and PowerAmp (constantly, love that app sooo much), and Bluetooth for my Airpods, I'm at 16% now.

One thing I can say for sure about the iPhone is it's battery life is really great. I sometimes miss the 6+ I had because of it's awesome battery life. Anyway, that's just some thoughts I've been having. $1000 for a phone is a lot to justify, and as we get closer to both products' announcements, I think my vision will be a bit more clearer. Hopefully, I can become Samsung's guinea pig for the Note 8, but yeah, those are some of my thoughts that have been rolling around in my mind for the past few days.

New rumors suggesting 120hz refresh display. I wonder how much truth to that.
Little. New rumors have little foundation imho as unless we heard about them weeks ago before mass production commenced, it's simply far too late for new hardware (or software) to make an appearance.

This always happens in the last month - six weeks before a device is unveiled, with the internet rumor mill peeps getting swept up in the hype and forgetting simple things such as manufacturing logistics and such have to factor into reality of it.

I am not saying there won't be some surprises but they are usually small and measured against everything we knew and expected.

That's interesting. Didn't realize that date was so close to the previous iPhone release. I'm sure it isn't a coincidence or mistake. It's bold indeed.

I bet all my chips on Apple and the iPhone 8 being the bigger success.

I wonder if the presumably better availability of the Note 8 versus the predicted limited availability of the iPhone 8 will play any factor. Price, too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see disgruntled iPhone 8 customers who didn't make the preorder switch to the n8. Heck that mah happen to me.

The good thing about Samsung is there will be bogo's almost right away. Sell one on swappa and instant free phone.

A little know fact is that Note 5 And S7 and current Samsung Gear VR compatible phones when running VR can push the Refresh Rates of the Diplays to 96hz to give us realist motion with no lag or blur which is critical to VR.

It is not a stretch to presume Apple has gotten its Displays to run at 120hz what they call ProMotion if True, then it meets 2 Criteria that they will stop using numbers for IPhone.

#1. It's an iPad Pro level feature
#2. It sets it far apart from the 7s and 7 Plus which won't have 120hz displays.

If so it's gonna be called IPhone Pro.

I'm sure the new iPhone won't have a number in its name, but "Pro" just doesn't make sense to me for a phone. A tablet, yes. I can see differentiating something that is being marketed as replacing a laptop as a "Pro" model. But a phone?

To call it a pro device I think it would need stylus support like the note and not just support for the pencil but added features like the S pen has.

I would imagine we all can preorder the IPhone 8, but would end up on a long fulfillment list, right? That's what happened to me when I preordered the IPhone 6 Plus and the very first Apple Watch. Or would they just put up an "out of stock" or "unavailable" notice up? I'd hate to miss it but I would not be shocked to miss out on it.

Eh, either way I'm not buying the Note 8. I'd just stick with the effective combo I have now with iPhone 7 Plus and S8+. I'll wait and see if Samsung goes back to flat displays now that everyone else seems to be copying their edges.

That's kind of where I'm at. I've only ever had iPhones, currently on the 6 Plus. I'd say there's about a 75% chance I'll go with the iPhone 8 but I'm also considering the Note 8 or Pixel 2. I'll be up and trying to order the minute they go on sale but the longer it takes me to get one the less likely I am to wait. So many good options now.

As for the name, seems odd to come out with the 7(s) and 8 at the same time. Then what do they call them next year? My guess is - 7s, 7s Plus, and simply "iPhone" for the 8.

I have gotten iPhones in the past at an Apple store long before many folks received their preorders, just sayin.

I think this year will be different. Last year you couldn't get the 7 plus in store on launch day. It took several weeks before you could get a 7 plus in store.

I think it will be very difficult to get an iPhone 8 on launch day, even if you try and pre-order as soon as pre orders open.

Highly plausible within the first 90 days. Buying a Samsung device on launch day is probably a bad idea since we now have a trend of super incentives popping up very quickly.

Point me in the direction of where I can get a Galaxy S8/S8+ for buy one get one free. It's been out for nearly 4 months.

Got one at store two days after release day, 7 plus.

Preorder puts one in an endless loop of waiting and delayed notifications.

Much better to pre order, than assume you can just walk into a shop and get the one you want. Most people struggled to get them in store for a while.

Yep, it's funny how the old Samsung ads about waiting in line for the "next big iPhone" were so accurate. It's funny also how readily available the new galaxies are in stores despite selling well. When I was in the market for the iPhone 7+ at launch, I had some dude lie to me about IUP in store, so it created a window of opportunity to get one put aside at another location even though it wasn't the color I wanted: 128gb silver for T-Mobile. Took weeks to get the 256gb matte black and I settled for it because I really wanted a 128gb matte black. I am going to pre-order through T-Mobile this time if I go iPhone 8 for a trade in promo.

We really need incentives to pay albatross rates for these marginally improved devices. The 8 is an exception because the 7/7+'s specs are very marginal and lower than where they should be: QHD, 3-4 GB RAM, quick charge, USB Type C standard, wireless charging, etc.

If the Galaxies had the same demand as new iPhones, they wouldn't be so readily available.

True, but at the same time, iPhone demand is crazy because it's over a decade built for the phone itself and Apple had its brand exist even before then with products like the iPod.

Or reality. The Note 7 had many BOGO's during it's pre-order time, and many after release. So did the S8. I don't expect the Note 8 to be any different.

Got any proof? I find it hard to believe you could pre order a £700 flagship and come away with 2 devices.
