That reminds me of how iris scanning worked for me on the Note 7. A hair slow, needed a swipe, and failed often in brightly lit rooms.

Actually, now that you bring it up I realized a complaint I made about how Apple Pay will work on the X is exactly how it works with Samsung Pay.

  • Swipe up for Samsung Pay/Doubt tap power button for Apple Pay.
  • Authenticate with either pin, iris, or fingerprint/authenticate with Face ID
  • Place phone near NFC scanner/Place phone near NFC scanner

Yeah, it was wake the phone (power or home button), then swipe to trigger the scanner. Wasn't an issue for me. Worked smoothly for me as well. But, always room for making the process more efficient. And they've done that with the Note 8. You can now go straight to scanning by hitting the power button. Very nice.

More like replace the iPhone X as my next purchase :p

I know how tired we all are of the "Steve Jobs would never have allowed this" schtick but in this case I actually think it's true... IMO they blew it with the notch on that display because that is one fork-in-the-eye level compromise. For a truly revolutionary iPhone they should have waited until they could have touchID under the display and a way to avoid that notch.

The Note 8 display (and the V30, and others...) with it's next-to-nothing bezels and symmetrical screen looks way more space age than the X, and facial recognition even though it might work smoother than Samsung's implementation is just so clearly taking after someone who was faster than them (also with wireless charging).

Anyway, I didn't mean to veer into the "x copying y" ditch because that does lead nowhere, I'm just mentioning those things because I think they'll deter from how revolutionary the X comes across to at least part of the public. My biggest gripe is the non symmetrical screen, because that notch simply contradicts the whole point of having an edge to edge screen.

I hear ya with the ecosystem blues though... Because what really turned me on in that presentation was the AW 3 with cellular.. That thing I just want.
I'm getting the echo system blues right now. Anyhow I think the best thing for me to do is to stick to my original plan. Galaxy note and no iPhone X. I definitely want to give the iPhone X a try.

You will change your mind again I'm sure lol

It's certainly a tough one and the fact the iphone x isn't out until November won't help your decision.

Hmm, so 960 for the Verizon version minus 425 Note 7 credit, plus tax, plus 80 to buy a trade in 5s = about $650 + 360 camera free. What do you guys think, is that worth it? I figure there is no way it goes below $600 on swappa by the time the ipX comes out.

Now my only pain is living without a smartwatch.

Alright so I couldn't resist, ordered me a shiny Note 8. Should be here Monday. All this excitement with new phones I just can't sit around for 2 more months before having a toy to play with. Worst case I'll sell it, best case I'll keep it. Now to brainstorm ideas for making my AW work with it.

Did you buy it outright or did you get it on a contract?

It won't work on Android per se, but I plan on leaving a cheapie iPhone in a drawer at home to power it over wifi. I should still be able to do most things I can do today on the AW. It won't be perfect, but at least I'll get notifications for most things, and be able to use my fitness and sleep apps.

Interestingly, the Note 8 and the S8 Plus facial recognition is not that bad if you set it up right. When you set it up, make sure you deselect the option for faster recognition and then its more secure. It really can't be tricked with a photo (i tried many times and it didn't happen once) if you set it up correctly in which most reviewers failed to do. Setting it up without fast recognition checked causes the recognition to take 2-3 seconds to recognize you (same time as the iphone X since it has to recognize you and you have to swipe up) which is the only negative plus the face recognition doesn't work in the dark or dimly lit light conditions.

I have found using the combination of fingerprint scanner and face unlock (fast recognition deselected for more security) to be my most convenient means of unlocking my devices. If all else fails which is rare, the pin is always there but the fingerprint scanner is really fast and highly accurate on both of my devices. I only use Face Unlock in the car (if parked not driving) or house since their are occasions where it actually can be useful.

And yes I have a galaxy S8 plus and a Note 8. The S8 plus will be eventually sold once I see some more high quality tech that gets my attention.

Yeah you mean something like an SE or iPhone 5S? Use it on WiFi for the Apple Warch but then it'll only work at home, unless you setup a WiFi hotspot with your phone for the iPhone to connect to?

Yeah I'm still investigating that. Supposedly once your iPhone remembers a network, so does the AW. Then I can setup a mobile hotspot with no password on the android phone and the AW will connect to that. Haven't tried it yet to see if it actually works.

Ultimately it may push me to purchase the AW4 for the LTE.

Really don't see anything else replacing your S8+ but the S9+. Maybe that rumored early January release will happen. ;)

What do you rate higher out of the S8 plus and the note 8?

Nope but that LG 43 inch 4K monitor is looking mighty nice.

Note 8...much smoother performer and it has S pen capabilities, the extra ram, and the dual camera. If you don't want this, go for the S8 plus. I use DeX and I definitely know the more ram is useful. The Note 8 is speedier with multitasking in DeX and no slow downs unlike the S8 plus.

Anyone order through Samsung.com? How accurate are their shipping dates? Mine says ships by 9/15, but many on slickdeals are saying they still have no tracking number 2 weeks after placing their order.
