Well I stopped by BB to fondle the Note 8 again as I wait for my order to ship, I spent a lot more time with it this time around. I still really dislike the tall/narrow form factor, but once the screen is on you forget about that a little bit because the screen is stunning. I ran my 7+ next to it and noticed whites looked a bit better and more true on the iPhone, but no contest regarding colors which popped so nicely on the N8. Interestingly I was afraid the form factor would cut off a lot of stuff, but running safari and chrome side by side I noticed that internet text was not cut off on the sides. Weirdly enough text was just a touch larger on the N8, even though it was more narrow. Probably something I have to experiment more with .

Another thing which I still hate is the curved edge(s). Someone on here said there was no glare, but I found the opposite. Under BB's fluorescent lights the glare was huge (trump accent). It was literally a line of bright white almost all the way up and down the phone on the curved edge, depending on how you held it. I'm afraid for how it will look outdoors, although to counter that it will probably look nicer with the extra nits than my 7+. Someone else said there was no sensitivity loss of the stylus towards the edges, that's true because the stylus doesn't work on the edges!! Well at least in Samsung Note, which is the only app I tried it in. There is an obvious gutter on both sides right where the curve begins where the stylus does not work at all, I'd guess maybe 4mm or so on each side. I noticed this gutter with some apps such as Chrome, where text and other content would not go past, so assume it is some kind of developer recommendation. On the one hand I suppose it's good to avoid distortion, but it's a loss of screen space. No gutter exists on the top/bottom curved edges in landscape mode though which was nice, and I did note very little distortion using it like that. False touches were minimal, and I was trying to curl my fat around the screen to make it happen. My fat fingers did set off the edge panel a LOT, but I see that it can be repositioned.

Also about the bezels, I've been hearing a lot on here complain about the iPhone X side bezels and how the N8 has "no" bezels. IMO that's patently false, the N8 definitely has side bezels, and they don't look much thinner than the X or even my 7+. They are just semi hidden because they are at the bottom of the curved edge, but they are still there and you can still see them even when directly looking down at the display.

Lag? The N8 had absolutely no lag whatsoever, in fact I was amazed at how smooth Chrome scrolled up and down and didn't realize my 7+ safari scrolling is pretty bad in comparison. Although I've never really noticed any lag on Samsung phones probably since the Note 4. I notice more lag on my 7+, and frequent freezes of the OS for a second or 3.

Anyhow, just some more extended thoughts on the N8 as I wait for my order. Which leads me to another caveat, Samsung customer services SUCKS. Yeah I meant the capital letters, and that's one factor which scares me if I have warranty issues. My order said "ships by September 15", but today it still doesn't say shipped, it doesn't even say processing. I tried to chat with Samsung but they said they only dealt with technical issues. I called and after 45 minutes on hold hung up, but on my next call I let them put me into their queue to call me back, estimated call back in 4 hours!! I really really don't know if I want to deal with Samsung customer service after being pampered with Apple answering my call almost immediately and having their physical stores available. If it doesn't ship by the end of the day I may just cancel it and grab a 8+ to tie me over until the X, or the pixel XL.

Why wouldn't you just cancel the order and go grab a N8 in a store today before making that leap altogether?

Apple definitely has a leg up on CS vs literally everyone else. It's something I've argued that should be ranked when discussing paying a premium for Apple products. You get a CS centered infrastructure that's usually top notch (I've had some bad experiences here and there but overall they're excellent).

On lag, the difference I notice between iOS and Samsung is the usual between iOS and Android: iOS just animates much smoother and quicker than Android with a couple of exceptions. It just is what it is. However, on my 7 Plus currently it is 50/50 that the camera or alarm icon will activate with the first tap when I pull up mission control so YMMV.

I thought about it, but get the $425 off with Samsung as a former Note 7 owner, so it ends up costing me $535 plus all the free stuff.

iOS, I get worse than lag, fairly often it just freezes the entire OS for a second or 2. I would bring it back for warranty, but it's very hard to replicate, and my other 7+ and my wife's 7 does it also. It happens mainly when opening apps, I haven't pinned it down to any particular app yet.

Samsung just called me back, rep actually sounded like he was in this country so that's a plus. He assured me the phone was picked up by the shipping company, but that it takes some time for the shipping company to update Samsung with the shipping info. So if accurate I should have it in hand by Monday, woooo.

Are you going to get the iPhone X as well?
That's the thing I don't really want to have both. Note 8 is so tempting but all my products are apple so I just can't not have an iPhone

The prices on contract are a worry given what's been quoted from EE for example. I was planning on getting the series 3 Apple Watch to go with my EE iphone x but if the x is going to cost £80 a month even with unlimited texts, calls and 100GB of data that's a lot of money even if I can upgrade after 12 months

You can always keep your 7 plus just to have an iPhone around and then get the note 8.

Yeah it's an option but ideally don't want to be running with two devices. Been tempted to sell my 7 plus and get the note 8 and wait for the iphone x

Btw video about can a photo fool facial recognition

Yep that's what I'm doing. Most likely I will double fist it this year with the N8 and the X, well at least until the pixel Xl2 gets released and if it's decent. With the Samsung promo I figure I won't lose anything on resale.

Huh. I can't say as I've experienced that kind of thing with my 7 Plus. That sounds like a defective unit. Safari still crashes on the reg if it's a page with lots of video elements on it, but nothing freezes as you're describing.

Good luck on the phone. Sucks that you won't have it to play over the weekend but that just means Monday itself becomes a little less like a Monday. ;)

I bought my iPhone 7 plus outright and my note 8 is on contract. I paid about £280 to pay off my previous device and £50 up front for the note 8. So getting the note 8 wasn't a huge upfront cost and the 7 plus is already paid for so I don't mind keeping it.

It's a bit wonky. Most of the time, it responds but when it doesn't, it doesn't. Voice recognition on virtually all of the voice assistants suck on ice.

That's a bummer. Okay Google is very responsive on the Pixel right?

This mirrors my impressions to the T. Some things really bother me but in the end that screen seems to make it all worth it.

The side bezels I don't mind, they may be visible from the side but from the front they're virtually non existent.

One feature I'm extremely interested in is the notes on the lock screen with the S Pen.

A couple questions for those who have the phone:

- Let's say I meet a potential client at a seminar, can I write down their phone number, and then from the lockscreen, save that number into my contacts and create a contact?

- Can I jot down something and set it as a reminder? Like set my alarm 15 minutes from now?

Basically, what I'm getting at is how much functionality this feature has. It could be a game changer and push me to get this phone over the iPhone X.

Just so it doesn't get buried, wondering if anyone has feedback on the above.

Not good for my wallet reading about the Note 8, not when I already have the S8+. Also thinking about picking up an X like having both iOS and Android.

Haven't had a Note since the 3, that was one of my favorite devices ever.

Well, Samsung may have gimped the Google Assistant a bit via software to promote Bixby. If they play games like that, I might just go LG V30 in a few months.

Been playing with it about an hour now and just realised I haven't even used the s pen yet! So many features.

The screen is absolutely incredible though, love the size! And the extra height is lush on a portrait scrolling app!

One thing that is a bit annoying is the light colour of the navbar... My keyboard is set to a black theme. And the navbar on half the apps is a light colour. So it'll be nice and dark all the way down the phone until that bar! Apparently there used to be a black option that got removed. The one thing I was a bit surprised by / didn't notice before from videos etc.

Navbar App in the Google Play Store will allow you to customise the colour of it.

Q. Did the blue version launch in any territory ? I see black and gold for Europe and black and orchid grey for US, and Black and Gold for Taiwan / Hong Kong so where is the blue ??

They may have, but I don't think it's a Bixby thing. Google Assistant, Now, whatever it's name has been in previous iterations has always seemed wonky on Samsung devices.

It works well for me. Cause every time I say the "Okay Google" towards my Google Home device, my Note 8 also activates. I wish they could detect each other, and I can set a preference of with one responds when in close proximity.

I also usually use "Okay Google" to turn on my Hue lights right before I get home. Haven't had any issues yet, and I also have Bixby wake command on.

Is OK Google actually waking device from sleep because Samsung disabled that ability on past devices and the S8/8+. You had to actually wake the screen first and say OK Google on the S8 otherwise saying OK Google with device in standby screen off did nothing.
