This is typical for me if I only watch videos mostly. If I am mixing in Bluetooth streaming, headphones playback and normal texts on a typical day I would get 24 hours+ of use and around 7 hours of SOT.

That seems extremely good for video playback use.
What do you have your screen set to, adaptive, basic etc? Mine is on basic and FHD and getting around 7 hours usage but most of that is web browsing and email. I'm assuming most on here will be using adaptive & WQHD.

Everyone is demolishing my usage lol. Maybe I need to give the AOD off and 1080p combo a try?
Dont read to far into battery life comparisons, there are too many variables in play. I can get over 9 hours SOT on my S8 if I have a great signal but it can go as low as 5 hours if i'm in a bad area with crap signal. Then it depends exactly what you are doing on your phone, if you watch alot of youtube or movies your battery life will be alot better then if you are playing games or using intensive apps.

At home, the cellular signal is always weak (on any phone or network). I have Wi-Fi on but would I be better off turning off mobile data when at home? Or is it just as much a drain searching for a cellular signal as it would be searching for a 4G signal?

What are some examples of intensive apps? I don't play games on my phone much at all.

Personally, I'd love to see the ROM community come back to life. I don't even care about Android official updates. Back before I got an iPhone, it was more exciting to root, custom recovery then ROM my devices. That's just me.
The rom community is still alive and kicking buddy.. Fwi, I am still using a OnePlus One, but on Nougat 7.1.2 having flashed Resurrection Remix Rom.

It's now what a 4 year old phone still running smooth, with great battery life and hardly any bugs.

No worries, enjoy your note 8 with a year old OS. By the time you get the update you can buy a note 9 with a year old OS. It's a vicious cycle to have to put up with, each to their own though.
On the iPhone forum, when I talk about lags, stutters, battery drain on iOS 11, I am told never compare the last version of a previous OS to the first version of the newer one.Dont use betas as a benchmark as it's a beta. So basically we have to wait a year for the final bug free version to arrive and till then we have to slog through all these issues but in the end he newer version of the next OS again breaks things . Note users directly get the final version of Android after its optimised properly and don't have to deal with these issues. Heck thanks to Play Services, most of the apps are updated through play store anyway.

Searching for a data signal, is not as bad as when it's searching for cellular signal.

If you are standing still in one area that is predominantly 3G, more often than not, it will remain there, because the coverage is purely a 3G covered area. Sure it could drop, but that's very rare these days.

Cellular signals is the one that hurts your battery, if the actual signal goes up and down. You can normally see the signal bar, go from full, to 1 bar, back up, and sometimes you just lose the signal completely.

If you have had a few Samsungs you would know they vary from unit to unit and are a never ending pain trying to get it right. Like chasing your tail.
Yes because all iPhone users have the exact same battery life regardless of how they actually use their phone.

Yes that’s my settings. No point in getting such a capable phone and then dumbing it down to 1080p. Just my opinion though. I’m sure it works for a lot of people. I just have be extra lol

Yeah. I just wish Samsung would listen to us and stop locking that freaking bootloader. I've got an old Note 3 running Jedi Elite. It hasn't slowed down one bit. Only thing I've had to do is get a new battery. It's literally been on every day since I got it. It's my media device.

It's why I haven't seen a need to upgrade yet. I mean, it's not like the OnePlus One or the Note 3 are bad devices despite being old. Heck, they better than most 2017 devices.

But I'm seeing how the Note 8 reviews go, and might look into it.

I'l try WQHD (which is just for pics & videos?) But having used basic for the majority of the last 2 weeks, I actually prefer it to adaptive now.

Why do people come to the Alternatives form just to preach about how much better iOS is?
For same reason some u7ers do the same (albeit reversed) on the iPhone threads.

If you suspect a user has gone from criticism to out and out trolling, do not respond and please use the report button. Once a users post behaviour has been flagged by mods, it makes it easier for them to moderate.

S8+ and Note8 doing the most out here. Take note (pin intended ) of the fact that he put the phones on max brightness meaning the Note8 could go up to 1200nits, both Note8 and S8+ have Larger, Brighter, Higher resolution displays and yet they managed to absolutely trounce the iPhones:
No, indoors at Maximum brightness the Note 8 doesn't do 1200 nits. It will only do up-to 1200 nits outdoors and importantly with Auto Brightness ON. With Auto Brightness off, it will not do the additional ramp/ boost to reach 1200.

No WQHD is for everything. Unless you are doing lots of gaming, dropping down to 1080p will not save you any real battery life.

You are not turning off pixels or reducing the screen size, you are merely changing the resolution scaling. You are still illuminating the same screen and all its pixels, so for most things on your phone which are not CPU or GPU intensive there will be NO discernible difference in power consumption.

For Example, imagine changing the resolution scaling on your laptop screen, it really doesn't change battery life in everyday usage, it only benefits certain tasks like gaming, and more in the way it helps frame-rates and performance than battery life.

Samsung used to reserve resolution scaling for Gaming, where it was most appropriate. Moving it to general display settings was a mistake as it has created this bubble of confusion in users that are missunderstanding how it works and where potential benefits come from.

So unless you are gaming or doing a lot of rendering or VR, keep to the native resolution QHD and enjoy the screen as it is supposed to be seen.

They all want to ride out the hype train to get as many followers/subscribers on their channels, and we have to remember that many of them get sent the phones for reviewing for a short period of time, so time isn't always on their side.
Or often use the me first route to video hits to potentially use YouTube ad revenue to pay for their devices. It's why you will happily see some users destroy their phones in increasingly silly videos because they figure if they get the hits, they will be able to fund their re-purchase and the initial ....

Exactly! The me first route tends to get difficult for them in recent times as it seems the OEMs put an embargo until a certain date and then boom, suddenly there are a bunch of Note8 reviews that have gone up the day it ends.

I like reviewers like Flossy Carter and Erica Griffin who take their time and delve into detail.

Turning mobile data off if your connected to WiFi won't yield any benefit. Your phone merely won't use mobile data for data downloads but it already is not doing that as you are connected to WiFi. The cellular radio is still however polling for regular carrier signal for sms messaging and phone calls all the time even with mobile data turned off or connected to WiFi.

Sadly being in a poor cellular spot, if you need to keep cellular on for calls and messaging, then it really doesn't matter, you won't get as good battery life as someone else in a good coverage area. The only way would be turn cellular activity off completely, (use airplane mode to turn off all radios and then turn WiFi on only, whilst keeping airplane mode on).

Where I work we are not allowed to have our phones (hospital ward). We have to keep them in a locker outside of the ward. This area has poor reception. I have to keep my phone on airplane mode otherwise I'll come back and find my battery drained.

I use basic at full HD+ resolution. I have my brightness at a 3rd the way up with auto brightness off. I turn it on outdoors only. I keep wifi on at all times. I have always on display turned off(not to save battery but I don't think it's a feature that is that useful for me.). Apart from that I just use it and don't worry about it. I'm heading home with 51% remaining and I was streaming to my Bluetooth speaker at work am night. 3 hours and 20 minutes SOT with 16 hours and 27 minutes total usage. I'm very happy with that.
