Of course it's interesting to note that the first Galaxy Fold is cheaper, and comes with more accessories like case and buds. The Fold 2 is more expensive, but lacks any accessories outside the charger and cable.

Sometimes it's annoying to see the most premium product being cheapened out of basic accessories.
It's because the engineering costs and unit price of the Fold 2 went up quite a bit. It's why we're seeing 256GB as well. This is a better device than the Fold 1 period, and they would have to charge $2200-$2300 to offer it with equivalent storage and accessories. It's part of the go-to-market strategy for foldables while prioritizing rapid competitive design improvements and pricing.

Well I think you are more specifically saying you don't see ipad users replacing their tablets with an android tablet? Well yeah that can be an issue, I don't think anyone is arguing that point at all, everyone's needs will be different. My use for my ipad is exactly how Cryates describes it, basically the ipad for me is just a dumb tablet, a really large iphone. But in your case you need specific iOS apps and the pen input, so this won't work for you.

But I do think there is a case for more complex use (ignoring lack of pen input for a second). I'm sure most apps on iOS can be found on Android, and Samsung always works very hard to give its tablet OS much more functionality than typical Android tablets. In some ways the Fold 2 supersedes iOS though, for example wireless Dex sounds really powerful and useful to me.

But do I think the majority of iPad users are going to rush out, sell their iPads and buy a Fold 2? Hell no, this is such a niche market and we are only at the very very beginning stages of a paradigm shift. Whether it's worth the price of a phone AND a tablet is very individual at this point, but IMO in a few years it's going to be a no brainer, but by then Apple will have its own foldable phone on the market.

Just a side note. My use case for my iPad is not pen support. It's just the app I use for my business useage. I don't have a pencil for the iPad as I think they're overpriced to just doodle with. Which is all I'd be doing if I had one. :)

It's more the fact that Android as a tablet has just never worked for me. My Chromebook is essentially a tablet too as it bends round to form "tablet mode" and it's a pretty damn horrible experience sadly.

My point was just that for some people, this IS a tablet AND phone replacement. And if I was in that camp id be all over this device. The price certainly wouldn't be as much of an issue then.
But for lots of people I don't think they could get the same tablet experience that an iPad provides, even those who don't use the pencil.

Just a few clicks away

Yes, I’ve already read this, as I previously stated. My point is the AP article says otherwise. I will need confirmation from a Samsung rep on the phone to feel confident we can subscribe post-purchase.

The majority of iPhone/iPad users are too busy idiotically laughing at it because it's a Samsung device, so they aren't thinking about actually buying this anyhow.

Or could be they are laughing at the notch they still have while innovative competitors have a notchless foldable phone with a 120HZ screen.

The lack of notch and 120Hz internal screen really outclasses the 2020 iPhones.

One is from an OEM the other is just hearsay which also notes :

" The other reader theorizes that this is simply because of Samsung's recent switch to a new Members app that doesn't have Care+ functionality yet. "

I have never found issues with Samsung service the concierge service is unmatched and even my 65" TV was fixed on site within 2 days so I have no complaints but I have many for Apple over the years but YMMV :)

Blind devotion.. People are that shallow? SMH. I'm a tech guy and never would be devoted to a brand. I'm devoted to tech, regardless of logo. Apple is cult-like... got the blinders on.

Exactly......But there are some here that only come into these forums to post something negative about anything without an Apple logo on it. It is indeed cult like.

I think I've read a lot of people say it will replace a phone and tablet.
When it adds s pen support it likely will for some.

I will always want a bigger tablet even with a fold. However to have a phone and tablet in one on the go would be awesome

I don't know about that. If you compare an iPad with a vanilla Android tablet then I agree with you, it's amazing how far Google has dropped the ball on Android tablets. But I don't think there are any pure Android tablets anymore, aka there are no Google branded tablets. Each oem has their own extras they provide into their Android/tablet OS, and Samsung is easily the oem that provides the most functionality on their tablets. Still, with that said you are still at the mercy of the individual developers for each app and if they decide to add some sort of tablet support, here is where iOS certainly has a very good advantage. But Samsung has really pushed their own apps to be great on tablets so not every dev is a slacker.

But I definitely hear what you are saying, my thoughts are almost exactly the same but differing in that I could never, ever envision replacing my surface pro with an iPad, I just don't think I could ever get the same tablet experience. But that's why I have the best of all worlds, a foldable tablet for when I'm on the go and my surface pro for when I have hunker down and get work done and/or when I'm home and want a larger tablet.

God not the “notch-less is novation” misnomer again. Its not a 1:1 comparison. Never was. Losing the notch is easy if you give up 3D face unlock. Apple obviously doesn’t want to. Sure I wish they could shrink it down a “notch” (!) but it is what is.

As for 120Hz, I’ll leave that for those who care about it. I have a phone without and an iPad with, I couldn’t care less either way.

From the above extensive review, I’ve underlined points that make sense to me & crossed out ones that I have no interest in.

Pros
  • Head-turning, bragging-rights form factor used for added multitasking value
  • Keeps the small-to-big foldable phones' promise thanks to the large Cover Display
  • Smooth scrolling and interface on the first foldable 120Hz display
  • Very usable with one hand on the go when closed
  • Smooth performance, good battery life
  • Great selfie pictures and video taken with the main camera
  • Excellent stereo speakers
  • Excellent display replacement warranty with the free Galaxy Z Premier service
Cons
  • More expensive than the OG Fold with twice less base storage
  • Still a thick and heavy phone to carry around, especially with a case on
  • Squished and tiny keyboard on the narrow cover screen
  • Taking selfies with the main camera could be less convoluted a process
  • No 8K video recording option despite the Snapdragon 865+ processor
  • Few apps are still not optimized for the main display's squarish aspect ratio

I’ve never been a Samsung guy, I have the tempest in a teapot that is Huawei P30 Pro (Mate 20 Pro previously) right now and I’ve loved it. They would honestly be my favorite Android OEM right now if the Google ship hadn’t sailed on them but as it is, this is it for my Huawei ownership once I finally move on.

But this one really tempts me as the more viable outer screen combined with the notch-less 7.6 display compared to last year. The biggest temptation is the offer of $50 for 20 months and the guaranteed 1,000 dollar buyback at that point.

Tht offer really makes the pricing that much palatable to me and I’m finding it hard to resist right now.

or they could just get rid of the notch entirely by making the top bezel a little larger to display more notifications...like say battery percentage.

For me it's not a tablet replacement. Screen is to small for that. But I like the big screen for a smartphone. But I will always favour a true 11 inch or bigger tablet over this.

I saw the same thing when I "accidentally" found myself on the pre-order page. That's definitely a good deal. I have my wife's extra iPhone 11 that I could theoretically trade in as well to get the price down to $1,530. Very tempting but I'm not sure if I'm 100% ready to splurge on a device like this.

Yeah I just have nothing to trade in. Haven‘t had an iPhone since the 6S Plus and my current phone while great on most levels isn‘t a trade in option so, that deal is the best I could do. Still wouldn’t be a tablet replace the for me on any level as it can’t touch my iPad Pro 3rd Gen for my needs so that is the best deal I could end up with.

Sure, they easily could. Clearly not in their plans, though. I have no strong feelings either way about the notch, so doesn’t really matter to me. Just not feeling the “we’ll go less secure face unlock and remove the notch“ is innovation schtick.

Apple should go the Huawei route and just stick it inside the battery icon itself. I have that option on since I do like to see the number.

Speakers are a huge deal to me and it appears the Fold 2 shines in that regard.

The browsing numbers are good but almost half that of the 11 Pro Max. Hmmmm.

I think this outer keyboard is probably best used with one hand. We shall see. Fold 3 should feature a proper sized outer screen finally. (Say 6.4"/6.5")

No idea why iOS 14 didn't bring that. Feels like such an obvious thing. Especially with the notch staying the same size for now.

I didn't say get rid of FaceID..... just even out the top. Either way it would allow more room for notifications.

As someone who is locked heavily in iOS.. but have switched to Samsung devices every year or two.. this is tempting as hell... then I just get the new iPhone usually when it comes out. I generally enjoy android products more. But maybe it’s the “new phone” feel I get.

honestly.. I love iMessage and it holds me back from the total switch. Every time I do that’s one part that just looms over the device for me. I also hated that the tab s6 and s10 didn’t have message continuity at the time.. Im so damn tempted . At least to try it out
