Whhaaatt? you can't be serious. What makes you think Ive can do make a better ios? Did he have any background in that area?

"Human Interface" means how the interaction between human and device takes place. The coding is what happens inside the computer.

In principle, perhaps this is good news for customers. And not because Forstall or Browett personally - I couldn't care less for them: I don't know them, and I'm sure with the money Apple gave them, they will be ok. And if Forstall goes to the competition, this is also good news for consumers and the industry in general.

I think this is good news for customers because it reveals the intention to take serious action when they screw up customers with mediocre OS features and retail management. For example, not only that Maps was a disaster, but that they also took out the GoogleMaps app option, screwing customers twice. And when they make harder conditions for retail and customer service employees, it's the customers that pay the consequences.

And strategically speaking, perhaps there's a new respect for OS X users with the ousting of Forstall and his Job's like narcissist management style and ambitions. Perhaps this will slow down the iOSfication of OS X. Such abrasive management style and culture can only get a company so far - and afterwards comes an implosion if not controlled and dealt with.

So, if this means Apple is struggling to reinvent itself and deal with the negatives of the post-jobs era and culture, willing to take swift bold actions - such as the firing of two senior VPs - its a great start.

I've should be in charge of all design output at Apple. According to the book of jobs no one at the company can touch him, because clearly he was always design mastermind. For a couple years now the media has reported that Forstall is a major pain in the neck for other employees at apple. He's no Steve jobs, nobody is. Steve never actually designed anything by himself at apple. He gave directions to designers, including the guy who just built his personal Yacht.

Jony Ive is clearly the design genius that fuels apple. Consumers should be nervous if he leaves or is ousted from the company. Not forstall.

You realize that most of the current leadership is the same as under Jobs? I feel that something is impeding progress. After iOS 6, what's next? Fixed maps? Maybe NFC? The cheese is getting moldy.

Well, Forstall is getting kicked out. Mansfield is "retired." And execs are taking and dividing the remaining work. It doesn't seem like they're confident in what's going on.

guys are seriously over reacting with the maps OS. Seriously 10 years ago we were lucky to have GPS. We're in a wonderful world of technological marvel and people are nit picking the map application in IOS6.

A simple thought exercise to put everything into perspective:

Would an Ive-designed iOS have the hold-and-wiggle icons, the rubber-band effect in lists, or the bouncing camera icon on the home screen?

I think Forstall's departure might reflect the end of the so-called "playfulness" that Steve commanded at Apple. All business from now.

Exactly. We're in a wonderful world of technological marvel and people have come to expect such things from Apple. The Apple Maps app is a foul ball when most everyone was expecting a home run.

1. Flyover in 3D is the most fun I've ever had in a maps app. I've used the new maps exclusively since iOS 6 release. Took me everywhere I had to go.

2. Everyone is acting like Forstall has been proven wrong about skeuomorphism. According to Cook, people love using their iOS devices. They've sold 100 million devices. Yet somehow, Forstall is still wrong? On what evidence? Because of techies complaining online?

There is a reason Jobs supported skeuomorphism. There's a reason why Apple devices are so easy to use. There's a reason why no other company can compete with Apple in intuitive interfaces.

While every other tech company is run by nerds. Jobs was that rare nerd who could think like a soccer mom. Soccer moms don't want to learn how to use a computer. Some don't even know what a computer is. But they know what a notebook is and if they see a picture of a notebook on the screen, they'll know what to do with it.

The majority of regular folks love skeuomorphism.

If you think Jobs was a smart guy and that he had good judgement in people, there must be a reason he liked Forstall so much. Maybe with Forstall gone, Apple will be run by nerds, just like all the other companies.

By the way, I don't use the word "nerd" to offend in anyway. It's just to differientate between the tech savvy and the mainstream. In order for Apple to continue creating big mainstream hits, they need to appeal to everyone.

Good Bye & Don't let the door hit you .....

"...abrasive style, and the whole iOS 6 Maps thing"

That management style NEVER wins points with the troops!

As far as the maps issue, tough! Suck it up & admit the buck stops with you and move on.

Can't do that? Then good bye! :D

Apple will be better off now.

Forstall should've gone to Cook months ago and told him Apple Maps wasn't ready for prime time. He had to have known it wasn't anywhere near ready. He probably figured that if he fessed up, he'd be in some serious hot water. Turns out he lost his job in the end, anyway.

for some reason all I can think about when I hear Jony Ive will be heading the software now is this...

NEEDS MORE ALUMINUM...

Am I the only one who actually likes the design of iCal and the skeuomorphism that Forstall brought? Oh well, I trust that these guys know what they are doing, but this isn't the same Apple we grew up with... I foresee big changes over the next few years.

I heard he was forced out because the mini was his idea and its a EPIC FAIL :p

Don't think so. Remember, it was Jonny who brought the bright and colorful iMacs. Look at how playful the iPods are this year

I know Jonny will make a great impact because he has what it takes to make software and hardware feel like one. Think about the physical world, from the airplane to the lightbulb. These objects have their shapes due to their function. For skeumorphism to be successful, function is essential.

That's why the piano in GarageBand works so well. Though Steve Jobs enjoyed the playfulness of skeumorphism, he also appreciated the importance of leaving things out if they weren't beneficial in the end.

My guess is he still has a non-compete in place that would prevent him from working in the same field for a direct competitor for a while. He'll probably do something more like Tony Fadell. Work on something completely different for a while like Nest.

B

Judges don't tend to rule in favor of non-compete acts in california (as far as I'm aware), the idea being NDAs cover anything that shouldn't be spread.

Even as a proponent of clean minimalist design, I actually started to come around to the skeumorphic concepts in iOS. It does give it some charisma compared to Android and Metro UI.

Some things were absolutely horrible & offensive, like Game Center, but other things are subtly brilliant, like the coherent jewel themes on the icons and buttons.

I look forward to the next chapter from Apple. I hope they don't lose the goofy charm that iOS has. It really gave it an approachable personality.

Thank goodness Forstall is gone. Apple needs to start making some changes to iOS and Forstall wasn't going to make that happen. Let's be honest, the more control Ive has over products, the better. I'm all for this and wont miss his AWFUL keynote presentations

We should all thank him for teaching us the word "skeuomorphism".

Thank you Scott!

Problem is most people don't. Most who comment on forums don't.

They think skeuomorphism is having some kind of a gradient that provides feel to some software; which is wrong.

I like skeuomorphism if done right. But in a lot of cases, Apple didn't do it right — Game Center, the **** that is Find My iPhone. Podcasts is buggy but that's the only thing wrong IMO. The skeuomorphism is A-grade but I agree people have their own opinions.

I am not liking this news. But hopefully, things get better in terms of design and overall collaboration.

uh oh

i think apple has lost its soul. those of us long-time mac users appreciate apple's old attitude - and that is you don't apologize for anything like ios maps. one thing i think they need to apologize for, however, are the ever-more annorexic designs and decreasing utility of devices. i love ive and all but just like UI, it can't be too thin enough that expadability and utility suffers. i paid $2600 for a premium laptop - shouldn't i be at least be able to upgrade RAM (specially now that 16 GB RAM costs $60) -- [insert wozniak attitude here]. a disposable laptop should not cost $2600. that's why it's disposable right?

this is like sculley and 1985 all over again. perhaps its good because apple's become too hip and mainstream; revenue over function seem to have been the mantra lately. been using macs since i was 12, and the direction apple has been taking lately is repulsive to me, with my one toe on the PC side recently. mind you, their quality is not as good but is getting nearer to match apple. i've stuck it through the 90s apple when things were so dire, but no, apple is just too big and hip now to listen to those customers who stuck it through the rough times.

i hope they'd reconsider, considering iOS makes a bulk of their revenue. i can't help but think apple's lost its way... with manufacturing issues (ie - look at backlog for iPhone5, and now iPads). if apple is truly balancing out revenue and customer, then they'd push these products out as quickly as they can.

i think cook should go back being the supply guy. im sure he's a nice dude but i think things aren't going very well at apple at the moment. ive needs to realize the difficulty of his new designs. they're great but perhaps the technology has not matured enough to make it economical.

apple's run amuck with big egos running their decisions. if things go bad this time around, i don't think i'll stick around. after all, apple seems to have abandoned its most hard-core loyal users.

Sad to see the guy go, but I hope that with the overuse of skeuomorphism will go away with him.

Microsoft Bob didn't need to be brought back from the dead, and that's exactly what Fortsall's been doing for the last couple of years.

As for Apple Maps, everybody knows that the issue is not the app itself but the underlying map data that is the problem.
I don't think Forstall can be held responsible for what led to the "Mapgate."

True. Forstall likely got fired for spilling his coffee on Tim's lap last Friday. It wasn't anything to do with the stagnation of iOS or the abortion otherwise known as Apple Maps or anything.

Well, if you want to get into rumors, then fine.

Forestall was said to be overly political, and quick to take credit for the work of others while laying blame on others. When he was successful, his abrasive personality was tolerated, but when he made embarrassing public mistakes, his other flaws only fastened his demise.... or so, some have speculated. ;)
