I had many deep scratches within a week of getting my X. The only thing I can think that happened to cause that was when it flew out of the cupholder of my rental car and landed on the floor mat of the passenger side. Sadly I had a screen protector on order but it didn't arrive in time prior to my trip. It's funny in a way because you watch all these scratch tests the day the phones come out. They use keys, box cutters, etc. and no scratches. I was thinking maybe a better test would be with sand, dirty fingers, etc. So to answer your question, yeah, it scratches easily. As others have stated you need a screen protector, there's no getting around it. A screen protector and a case to totally encase that beautiful phone that should be naked.

Ive had my phone for 12 days now and just noticed 2 micro scratches on the screen. Coming from Samsung phones, I used to never run a screen protector but I just ordered one for my X. Rest of the phone is holding up well but the screen definitely seems softer than usual.

I am amazed that so many adults still don't realize that glass still scratches (along with metal) and water is still wet.

Posting that an iPhone scratches is pointing out the obvious.
I'm amazed when I see people put naked phones in their pockets and put them down on any surface. Dirt, dust, grit, coins, keys, material friction. If you use it like a tool (it is a mobile computer) it will get knocks and scratches. Full case or back case with screen protector then your good or if you baby it like I do then it stays pristine.

It's the same when I see people clean their glasses with anything at hand rather than using proper clothes and/or cleaning fluid. *cringe* It's never an issue for them until it is. "How did it scratch so easily"?

Will alcohol wipes slowly remove the olephobic coating?... like the wipes that come with glass protectors.
Yep, don't do it.

Have been methodically keeping me phone in my side pocket facing my wallet rather then back pocket. Just noticed today there are a ton of micro scratch's on my screen. Anyone else have this issue? I really didn't want to use a screen protector but it's crazy
Screen protector? If not then I'm not surprised. The world is a dirty place. Grit, dust and dirt on your hands - on your wallet - in your pocket. Add some friction and voila.

Mine is being treated exactly like my 7 was, along with the 6S and 6 before, and all the other phones.

Those other phones get put through a lot. My 7 has been around the world with me, including in sandy pockets on the beach and in the water and everything else. They do show some signs of wear, but their screens are absolutely pristine.

My X has never been anywhere but my pocket, my hand, my work desk, and my home desk and bed. My X has several of little micro scratches along the lower section of the screen and now has several bigger scratches on the screen as well. I'm talking scratches that can catch your fingernail. Freshly washed jeans (And yes pockets washed inside out), my desk isn't full of diamonds, hunks of metal or glass, etc.

There's something off with at least some of these screens.

But jeans have lots of tiny grooves between the material and pockets are usually just cotton. Every room you enter has dust and dirt in it. Every chair you sit on etc. Crap will transfer to your hands and clothes so if you're sticking a naked phone in your pocket theres friction right there.

Just because it's not happened before doesn't mean it's down to way the x has been made. I've never had a USB memory stick die on me for pulling it out of the port without ejecting it on the system until I did.

As always, I keep my naked phone in a pocket (front left) dedicated solely to the phone. Nothing goes in that pocket other than the phone and my hand. Not even paper receipts.

Zero blemishes/scratches/etc.

I am reading people offering their theories, but I have to ask, is this your first iPhone? If not, did you treat your other iphones the same way (same pocket, with wallet, etc.)?

I've had practically every iPhone usually always in my back pocket and my 7 plus screen looks horrible with micro scratches I'll take a pic later and post. So my carefulness this time was side pocket.

Seriously thinking to get the case with the front cover

zero scratches on mine, front or back, carrying it fully naked. I know it will eventually micro scratch, but that's why I turn it in every year for a new one.

I’ve never used a screen protector. I hate the things. I’ve also never noticed any scratches on the screen of any of my phones. I always carry them in my side pants pocket or inner jacket pocket if I’m wearing one. But I think the most important thing is that I never carry anything else in the same pocket as my phone.

Dropped phone badly on concrete floor, phone has gel silicone case light quality case, only back is protected, screen is naked no protection of any kind, phone landed by touch some metal stuff on the way. It was on the magnetic mount in the bathroom. Magnetic mount which was attached to the tile wall Un gripped that’s why iPhone fall.
Found iPhone facedown on the concrete floor. I was pretty sure that there will be cracks on the screen but really got surprised when I see iPhone with completely OK plus 0 scratches on the screen.

They actually enhance the experience because I am never worrying about scratching or dropping my phone with protection on it while enjoying my 'experience'.

Strangely I don't worry about that either, and my phones are always naked. Never dropped, never damaged (apart from my 3GS which went into the laundry accidentally, doh). I can interact with my precision engineered device, not with some cheap piece of plastic.

I'm not suggesting going naked is the Only True Way, and that people that enjoy cases shouldn't; that would be ridiculous. But there is a benefit to going naked for people that enjoy the feel of their iPhone. Pretending there isn't is similarly ridiculous. :)

If I didn't snowboard, go deep sea fishing on our boat, ride dirt bikes, get rabid at concerts, live on the beach, golf while driving the golf cart recklessly, all while using my phone, sure...I would not use a case. But as it happens, I do a LOT of things where my phone has extreme potential to be killed by my foolishness. :)

I've had my iPhone for 6 days now, and it's been in a case the entire time. I just looked down at the screen and it already has a scratch on it. I'm baffled.
I've always had an iPhone, going back to the first one 10 years ago. I haven't dropped it, and it stays in my pocket alone. No keys, nothing else in that pocket. Yet it has a scratch on the screen already. How did this happen? I'm wondering if anyone else is finding their iPhone X screen being prone to scratches.
[doublepost=1510819512][/doublepost]I've had the same experience. I did NOT use a screen protector for either the 6S or the 7 Plus (or my iPad mini4), and no scratches on any of them... not even tiny ones. I don't want to use a screen protector. They annoy me because they invariably start to lift at some point, they scratch more easily and look awful, and they detract from the gorgeous high resolution display that I just paid big bucks for... I keep my phone in my purse and use my watch to receive texts, etc. The scratches are tiny, from swiping my finger on the screen when there were microscopic dust particles that I couldn't even see. They aren't bothersome now, but if I have this many in less than a week, I know I'm going to be unhappy a few months from now.

I live in the mountains, go trail running up and over the continental divide, mosh like a maniac at extreme metal shows, and, uh, play with my malamutes! :D

Same here. And iPhone is a tool that's meant to be used daily and it's going to accrue minor scratches. It's a commodity, not an investment.

I’ve had an X for one week today. It lives in a pouch in my purse or on my desk. It is *covered* in horrible deep scratches. I’m taking it to Apple Monday for a replacement. I’ve had iPhones for 10 years and never seen anything like this. My last phone was a 6 Plus that received the same treatment. In three years it has fewer scratches! There’s obviously something wrong with the X.

Wow! Tough crowd around here.

Isn't it possible that the iPhone X screen is more easily scratched than previous iPhones?

Brennan, you have my sympathy not my cynicism.

I took the screen protector off my X for maybe a 1-2 hours, and it was in my pockets only. Found a crazy amount of hairline scratches. Never happened with my 7+ as I didn't use a screen protector on it, and it was fine. So agreed, i think the X may scratch easier.

Same here OP.

Micro scratches in one spot like I was talking on the phone with earings in.

I don’t wear earings.

Can only see if if I tilt it into the light on a dark screen, but it happened fast. Had little scratches show up after the phone is a year plus old, but never in less than a week.

Never used a screen protector on an iPhone. Hopefully it’s not cancerous - I hate screen protectors.

Thinking the oleophobic coating is more susceptible than previously.

It’s not too bad yet. Not bad enough to lose sleep over, but with this and all the other threads popping up about it, I don’t think it’s an issue all these other replies should scoff so quickly at.
Would the spot be on the right side of the screen, almost a quarter down from the top?

Something defective about my screen - and possibly OP's. Tons of scratches, some kind of deep, after one week. It's never left might sight and is very delicately handled. Already has more scratches than the three year old 6 Plus it replaced! Going back to Apple on Monday.

My iPhone X screen is scratched too. Micro scratches that you can only see at certain angles when the screen is off. It's unfortunate because it's expensive and it's so new, but personally I'd rather have micro scratches than a screen protector. I'll try turning my pockets inside out in the laundry - I'm convinced it's just from putting it in my pocket.
