UPS just updated to ‘Your package was released by the Customs Agency’! Finally looks like movement.
Well, here I am with another report. While these are first world problems and not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, one comes to expect more from a company that is focused on customer experience. Called UPS this morning and was told my package, originally scheduled for today yet stuck in ZZ, would be delivered tomorrow. Ok, I bought it. Until this afternoon when the tracking site showed no movement from ZZ. I called UPS...first rep.."we need to investigate as it could be lost." Rep #2 after being transferred tells me a Chinese holiday happened and nothing moved. No delivery date provided. I then called Apple Customer Support to see if I could just cancel as I enrolled in the AUP for the first time. She says "sure", but needs to do a delivery investigation which could allow me to go to the store once completed. Says a typhoon hit China and has delayed things, but she can start the process. Something didn't sound right. Pass. Called Apple rep #2...He's new to Apple. Never heard of "Delivery Investigation" but has heard of "Shipping Investigation". Has no idea about going to a store to pick up a device. Gave me a free leather Apple case for my XS Max due to the inconvenience and all of the bad communication. Still can't give me an answer on delivery or if I could cancel. What a complete cluster for Apple. Sorry, a company of this size should not be having this poor of communication and shipping issues.

So - my XS Max has been in same fiasco of a stuck state in ZZ since last Friday. No movement. Just 2 mins ago, it shows cleared by customs. And delivery tentative thursday - east coast. This has been a very dissatisfying preorder experience. Will not play this nonsense game again.
No movement here yet, but maybe will see soon! We might see our phones in a few days !!!!

So it was a customs issue?! Apple didn't pay enough tax or something? Might be why Apple reps and UPS reps are so confused?
You know, I would be OK with this if they would provide a straight up explanation, but don't bump up a delivery date only to miss it and then tell people it was a holiday or mother nature.Someone on Reddit called UPS and was told that Apple waited until a certain number of packages pass customs so they can ship them all at once.

After reading about one forum member being able to cancel his order and then buying a sim free phone at the Apple store, that's what I just did. On the phone, Apple immediately cancelled my order, no problem. When the pre-ordered phone does leave ZZ, it won't be delivered to me.
I was at the store for about an hour and half because I didn't go until 4:45pm and we transferred everything to the new Xs Max. I had changed my mind about my order so I was going to have to go into the store anyway. I changed the color and the gb and am happier with sim free. What I had to give up was the upgrade program.
I have 7 days to bring in my old phone if I want the credit to go back to my credit card (or I could sell elsewhere).
Just checked - UPS did post it was released by customs too. Hope you guys get your phones soon.
