It seems to be the same case for the titanium Watch Ultra and intentionally designed that way. Someone mentioned it's meant to keep the glass from breaking when absorbing impact from a drop or due to the thermal expansions (extreme hot/cold) of the metal frame, components, etc. It's normal on maybe all phones to a certain degree, some more noticeable than others and those who don't notice aren't as OCD as Apple enthusiasts on MR/Reddit. The tolerance is as tight as it can be.
I think you’re right. From my experience, it’s definitely looking like it’s on purpose, however, the tolerances are slightly different on each phone.

A shame, since, when I take both my 14 pro max and 15 pro max in hand, the 14 pro max seems ultra smooth in that area.

15 pro is a seamless design, that’s the goal, anyone that’s held one that is assembled correctly would probably agree. Ultra watch is a very different product used in a very different way, worn, not held, its front glass design is flush or maybe even recessed, to protect it from damage. iphone 12-14 series were similar. Apple has gone back to some curves for comfort, but at the same time, as the early drop tests have shown, durability is easily compromised. It is also harder for 2 curved edges to meet perfectly in production, especially using vhb tape and not glue on the back, which is why we are having the issue at hand.

For those saying 'it's no big deal, deal with it, expect crappy work', youre just wrong. It is downright uncomfortable to type with this thing. It is scrubbing skin of my finger when I use it.

Thanks to this thread we learned this is a real problem and it affects at least a decent number of units (not just in this thread but can be found at some apple stores on display). So this is widespread, but not clear what percentage of users are affected. I *really* hope the 30% here is highly off because obviously those affected come searching to learn about the issue so it will distort that statistics.

Anyway, this thread has helped us lear a lot. Some of these units are obviously perfect. Some are off a little. But some of us won the defect lottery, and it's an endless exfoliation device and actually starts to hurt using it.

Many users will not even notice it. And even if you make them aware of it, they don't feel it. There are always people who simply "use" their iPhone, usually still with a case. But you can call us picky - I expect from Apple the quality they promise us at the prices self-proclaimed.

(I'd be interested to know if maybe even the few devices that actually shipped without a noticeable edge are more likely to be the ones that are "flawed". In other words: maybe the design even provides for this slight elevation, since it cannot be produced differently in the mass?)

Seems to be a product variable. Just picked up my 15 Pro Max and this was one of the first things I checked before leaving. Mine has a very smooth transition. I probably would have taken it anyway, as I am in a case 100% of the time.

It is variable. It seems there is a spectrum to the defect. From perfect, to off but not a big deal, to off but annoying, to off and harmful.

I think some rolex wearers need to try their rolex with shiv strapped to it to gain a sense of perspective, while we're told to go eat cake.

If it is hurting you, return it.

I received my replacement iPohne 15 Pro NatT.: Same issue but a little less pronounced [but clearly noticeable still] in the main area on the side. The bottom edge could be used to grate cheese however; but that's probably a feature though. /s

Debating whether to skip this generation of iPhones, I don't think one should reward bad quality control by spending money on it. Grease should also build up near that edge very easily, waiting for reports on this as time goes on as well…

The iPhones I had over the years where in pretty much pristine condition out of the box, apparently these days are gone for now.

That is not entirely true. iPhone X, Xs (Max), 11 Pro (Max) all had the problem that the transitions from glass (front and back) to the frame were often sharp-edged. I had many replacements until it was reasonably okay so you couldn't cut paper with it. The 12 Pro (Max), 13 Pro (Max) and 14 Pro (Max) were better here because the glass was completely flat. The only problem I had here was that the gaps between the display and the frame were often so large that you could see the silver innards of the device. So, quality assurance has been Apple's motto for years: "This is considered a manufacturing tolerance."

stack up of tolerances obviously has caused out of tolerance variation final builds it seems, even it if just by spc nano points...next year should be back in spec.

I went to the Apple Store this morning and realised that my 15 Pro is on the better side of average after handling a lot of the display models. I would say that almost all the phones you could feel the 'scratchiness' of the rear frame edges whilst handling it. There was one Pro Max which was in really poor condition - a genuine raised edge.

My conclusion is that this is clearly a 'within design tolerance' feature of the 15 which I expect to be refined for the 16. It's such a shame as I am one of the few that don't use a case and I immediately felt the issue coming from my flawless 13 mini - which I keep handling for comparison.

I am really surprised that many more YouTube early reviewers did not comment on it - the general consensus is that it feels fabulous in hand. I disagree, but maybe I expect more.

I am going to enjoy the phone I have.

I'm also wondering why no one(or at least I haven't found one) mention it on YouTube. There are thousands reviews but no mention about the sharp edges.

Also noticing this, annoying… I want to go caseless as always. Do you guys think it’ll become less sharp over time?
I don’t think it will become less sharp overtime. Now you noticed the sharpness you will always remember it. I don’t know about you but it will bug the hell out of me knowing that and feeling that. I would either slap a case on it, or make do with it (knowing it’s in the back of your mind) or return it and see if it’s a faulty batch. If it’s not a faulty batch and it’s meant to be like that then you have got some decisions to make if you stick with it or go with an alternative iPhone. Sharpgate

They do not comment on it because they are afraid that Apple does not give them access to new review units anymore, which would cut into their ad revenue considerably. These early reviewers are not honest, they just repeat Apple's marketing talk.

Agree with you on this one. Could you ever imagine ijustine ever saying anything negative. If she did then she can forget her annual selfie with Tim Cook.

I was expecting more from the press - Verge, Daringfireball, etc. Nothing.

One additional annoying thing is that I've noticed that I can see a slight gap on one side. No difference in feel but clearly demonstrates the whole issue is due to how the replacement back glass is aligned.

They play it safe letting places like this break the news after the usual posts on X or the maverick YouTubers who don’t get early units or a pass to the Apple event.

These operations have many people working there and being a maverick can cost you money and then the poor single mother working for you gets laid off.

I know this is not MR talk but it does shape the decision on whether to run with something negative. I was anti-government hand out until we got some single mothers who needed the job for government money while learning on the job. When the right wanted to cut those programs - me Mr. Right Wing - became Mr. Left Wing as I could see the impact to people I knew. The people whose kids called me “Uncle *******”. Yup, it can happen…

What this means is that I understand the cowardice of some operations. The news cycle is just a couple of days and it looks good on you. But then the lack of future ad revenue has its effect weeks and months later and some poor soul loses their job because of it. And Apple never forgets!

I have this issue on my unit. Whats the best way to get a replacement considering that there’s no phones in stock? Normally I’d just return and buy another but shipping dates are out to October 30th.

Would scheduling a Genius repair be faster? Do they have replacement units on reserve for these situations?

I am also having this issue, Wondering if i should even go to apple store to try to exchange right now, seems like alot of people are having this same issue.

We do not have a mac/tech press, we have a 'not-so-daring lapdog' press. When the lapdog told Craig "you were right about settings in ventura" he just jump the shark, heinously.

I ignore most of the tech press because of this. I dont give them clicks. Most of them are boring scripted sycophants.
