I have this issue on my unit. Whats the best way to get a replacement considering that there’s no phones in stock? Normally I’d just return and buy another but shipping dates are out to October 30th.

Would scheduling a Genius repair be faster? Do they have replacement units on reserve for these situations?

I think there are 2 steps. One is to make enough noise, hopefully with this thread, that some of the tech blogs have to pick it up. Second, is maybe wait a week or 2 so some better quality control phones will start to ship out?

No, I don’t think I need to make any “noise” considering I can return it for any reason within 14 days.

And the next thing on 15 Pro (Max): mine has it too. 🥺

I went to the Apple Store and checked out all the Pros. They all have it leaking through the speaker grill. The regular 15 doesn’t though.

Also I can see what you guys were talking about when you can feel the scratchiness of the edges, it was on like 75% of the Pros. The silver models were the most seamless. Luckily my Nat Ti PM doesn’t have any sharpness.

I think it's really coincidence. I was in the Apple Store today and could see that the blue 15 P(M) had the least transitions from glass to frame.

As for the light gap at the top: even my 14 PM has it. "Only" above the speaker grill, but it's there.

Most people use a case. It won’t be a problem, and it likely won’t change further down the line. It’s got to be the new back glass insert process.

Why would you think it wouldnt change? Clearly they have a wide spread of results. Some perfect. Some just off a little and some horrible. You honestly expect, that they will just continue on producing with the same defect rate with no improvement at all? Pray tell, why?

That’s incorrect. They’re constantly optimizing the manufacturing line throughout the product life cycle. If we were to compare an iPhone 15 PM next year to now, odds are that the defect rate will be lower. They’re regularly looking at these numbers, return %, and making adjusting accordingly.

I also imagine they tighten tolerances over time, even in the same product lifecycle.

Retail and Genius Bar are instructed to capture every iPhone returned due to a defect complaint from customers during a launch, they do care, and are actively look for emerging issues. It will change.

Even Apple employees in the stores seem to notice the problem that the glass does not fit properly on the back and that there is a sharp edge to the titanium frame.

Interesting... I am checking in as another who has noticed this and it really bothers me. One side has it and the other doesn't.
I was considering returning for various other reasons, but this was definitely one of them.

When I return it, I'll make sure to say this is a reason why so it's recorded.
If I buy one later, I'll open in store and check it out before leaving.

update after having phone for 4 days, I would still say mine falls into an acceptable category compared to others. I do notice when picking up the phone, or getting it out of pocket, repositioning in hand, I feel those edges, some sides/corners more than others, front actually has it more than the back. I preferred the stainless which was very smooth and predictable from all angles when handling. I like the lighter weight of this phone, but definitely not the distracting feel of those edges. Those of us that are particular about this stuff, who like things just right, will probably find this phone annoying at times when handling. Unfortunately we also fall into the same crowd that cannot stand to put a case on a phone to cover the edges up. Apple will probably tighten up production tolerances down the road, but I think they have bigger fish to fry first with the overheating problems that are getting a lot more attention at the moment, so it might take quite awhile.

My 15 PM is exactly as you describe. When I hold it in my hand and operate it normally, the back is smooth as butter. As soon as you run your fingers over the edges you feel it. But after I compared so many devices in the stores, I ask myself whether you have to accept it that way.

I strongly suspect that it has something to do with the rounded edges and titanium. I also can't see that the glass is lower than the frame. It is rather the gap between them. The smallest millimeters are enough for it to be perceived as a huge gap with the fingers. The glass can probably never be completely flush on all sides. All models that appear soft only do so on one side because the glass closes flush there. But not on the other side. The gap is bigger there and the edge is even sharper.

I had 2 orders, one I picked up on the launch day, other one got delivered yesterday. The phone that got delivered is not having the issue. I have booked a Genius Bar appointment and will ask them to replace my phone. I am going to ask for a retail piece replacement.
I don’t use the phone with a case and the sharp edges is annoying. I was going to live with it but the moment I touched one with no issues, I could feel the difference, the edge is so smooth, so I decided I have to go for a replacement.

Can’t blame you for trying, but seems like more are bad then good, and the bigger issue, phones that seem to be good, you may notice annoy you when using throughout the day interacting with it like mine, it’s just an annoying design apparently for some.

I have got used to mine, but after reading the X post shared earlier I also tried the bank note trick. I can easily insert a bank note into the rear right hand edge, and it’s even easier on the front left hand edge. It appears thay maybe it’s not the back glass but that side of the titanium frame that is slightly off calibration. No issues with other side of frame front or back.

Difficult to know what to do. I’m worried about waterproofing but equally concerned that a swap will lead to a more defective replacement.

Bank note trick is useful in UK/EU where we have plastic notes.

Update: turns out I can do this on my previous iPhone 13 mini. It's not as easy to slide in, and it's not possible to the same extent around the circumference of the phone, but does go to the same depth in places. Does not do it on the rear.

There are people feeling out multiple phones at stores, and they have reported majority of the pros have varying levels of sharp edges.

UPDATE: I went to the Apple Store and see if I can exchange it, and the manager said it is within there “tolerance” and will not exchange the device, I did feel the other models and they all feel better then mine in the floor which is sad.

That is not the Apple Store experience I'd expect. You're still within your return period, and you can absolutely return it or exchange it (if they have new retail stock) without reason.

I imagine you were going through the Apple Care replacement process versus an actual retail return/exchange.

Thats correct, i went to the genius bar, but you think if i go to an associate and say I want to exchange this, they will allow it? i find it ridiculous that they wont replace it i even have applecare+.
