Still waiting for the larger models to decide, but have boiled the colours down to yellow and silver. Silver would be bland (in a good way) and just fade really well in a no nonsense way. The yellow is popping though!

Do you use True Tone active on your Imac 24 ?...during the day it seemed fine to me, but now at night the screen becomes too yellow. I don't know if it's a matter of habit, but because the screen is smaller on the macbook air, it doesn't seem to be that yellowish, but here on this 24 Imac, either in dark mode or day mode, it doesn't look very nice.

How do you use yours, did you get used to it well?

I always disable True Tone on all of my devices, since it changes the color temperature, thus resulting in inaccurate color reproduction when viewing, editing and working with pictures and videos. For text only viewing True Tone isn’t bad, but overall I prefer to have a more accurate color reproduction. True Tone should be off by default..

No, it shouldn't. For the casual user true tone on is the better choice, but they won't know that it exists or what it is. But those that need accurate color know to turn it off.
I do quite a bit of photoshop and lightroom and find that true tone does a pretty good job on default settings - not perfect, but better than some pricy hardware color calibrators I have used. Really the best is to have a 6500K ambient lighting environment, which means no colored walls etc.
In my house I changed all the light bulbs to 6500K (“daylight”) wide spectrum LED (with 5000 to 10000 lumens per room, else daylight lighting looks weird) and have my work room with neutral white walls and ceiling. Color editing is more about the brain’s perception than true accuracy, and the brain’s perception of color is strongly affected by the ambient color temperature.
This is just to make the point that it is better to change the ambient lighting to match the screen, that to change the screen color to match the ambient lighting (which is what true tone does). Then you don’t need true tone.

After quite a wait my Yellow 16/256 arrived ... uh oh

Not sure what they did with the box. Stress impact on top. Two corners dented in enough and an ominous gash in front. Spoke to Apple before opening and they asked me to open and photograph. Inner box damaged. Gash is worse on product box. Passes through first layer and partially emerges from second layer of screen protector.

Apple suggested immediate return. As it was BTO and took 6 weeks best suggestion was refund and reorder. Investigation team called and spoke to me then asked if I would not like to try the computer to see if I would be happy to keep it. Well aside from the clear rough handling the package is damaged. When I go to sell on this looks bad. It also annoys me as the package is as much part of the experience as any.

A bit cheeky to ask me. I was calling returns to return another product and they spotted the issue. Asked if I had been given option to keep computer while a new one arrives (I hadn't). A little dismayed and then offered me a gesture of goodwill and I could choose an accessory to reasonable value for free when my pending (now arrived) iPad Pro is delivered. As ever Apple support and backup proves itself.

I would then be waiting 6 weeks for a replacement. I had time to have a think and review and in some ways has worked out well.

I did have a look at the computer when checking out. I have late 2017 5k BTO with 32/512. Several observations for me - and I stress these are personal for me as I do not want to offend anyone:
  1. The change in screen size is considerable. The height change is stark when beside the 5K. For me the change in screen is enough to be a deal breaker so 24 (or 23.5) does not work for me.
  2. The white bezel and mix of colours is not for me. Yellow machine has 3 colours going on when off. I prefer the silver and black of the 5k.
  3. Odd one this but lacks of logo is annoying. Makes it look somehow less premium.
  4. Edge on I prefer the very thin lines of the 5k. 24 is wider and I just liked the 5k.
  5. The yellow colour I simply do not like. The pastel front is pleasant but the metal work is (in my eyes) terrible - it reminds me of a cheap gold. It is not yellow! This has completely put me off the colour options.
I am a little concerned now as the 24 is not for me. No replacement for the 5k (for my desk, eye and use and again I stress this is simply my own personal feelings). I suspect the eventual replacement will come with a price to match.

Now not sure what to do. Tried a mini but was awful with wake from sleep. I have M1 iPad Pro on desk and see numerous reports on battery issue and display bloom. I am tempted to look at MacBook M1 with external display and keyboard (I have several monitors - LG 24" 3840x2160, LG 25" 2560x1080 and Acer X34P 3840x1440). Looking at refurb store there are some 8/256 at £850 which is not bad.

One thing does concern me. I asked Apple to note on my account the iMac was not my issue. I asked tech when they advised return of the M1 mini to note it was a problem they (by their admission) could offer no solution to (wake from sleep). If I get the M1 MacBook and have to return it and/or if the iPad Pro M1 does not live up to battery life of my 2018 iPad Pro and it has to go back that is a lot of returns on my account ... although all with issues that I spoke to technical/sales support with.

Stuck in a bit of a dilemma. I love Apple kit - software, hardware and services. I have the full range (5k iMac, several Apple TV, several HomePod, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPad Pro 12.9, Watch, AirPod Pro and Max and full iCloud services of which I use and enjoy all). I have been a committed Apple user for well over 20 years and change regularly. Now I find for first time there is not a desktop computer solution that I can find to work.

Each to their own I guess. I find the design great, and even two months later my heart smiles every time I see my iMac.
I also had a 27" iMac and I cannot share your observations. Yes, the size is smaller and I understand that this could be a deal breaker for some, but for me this is the perfect size. The display is really great.
What is even greater is the performance of this computer. No matter what I have tried to do the iMac remains fast and I had zero lags so far. I cannot say the same for my old 2019 27" iMac with 48GB of RAM..
The logo in front would mess with the design. I don't know how to really explain it in words, but when you use the computer the pastel color on the chin blends in with what you are doing and it really disappears. The same applies to white bezels, especially if you have a white wall (like I do).

I agree with many of your points. As I tried to stress it was a personal observation and personal opinion. I simply prefer the larger 27" 5k display and the change in physical size was a deal breaker for me. I have no doubt the M1 is a superb computer and look forward to what Apple do with it. I just hope they find a way to replace the larger machine with something that works well - or at least fix the M1 mini sleep/wake issues so I can select my own monitor. I do not push the computer overly hard - most of my work is in terminal. I am a VIM, TeX, MD, Groff and terminal user so probably not a typical user - I never really did like doing much with the mouse!

Mine arrive with damage too....but I thing is ok, so far.View attachment 1816025 ok
Oh no! The box is a work of art though and machine should be well preserved. Just a shame the boxes are damaged though - I am rather particular about my kit (well I do have OCD) and get obsessed when even the box has damage. When the carrier arrived with mine I was watching from indoors. Two more boxes that looked like iMac boxes fell out onto the road ...

Surely you knew pretty much every one of these things before you ordered it?
Complaining there is no logo and it makes it less premium is very odd, IMO. Same with preferring the look of your current iMac from a side on view because it’s thinner. Again, didn’t you already know that? And who buys it to look at it side on?

I think it’s probably a blessing in disguise that the box was damaged, which wouldn’t have bothered me in the slightest either, as now you can return it and forget the whole thing ever happened!

My box was damaged when it arrived also. It was long and thin almost like someone stabbed it with a forklift. The inside box also had a rip in the same area but much smaller, I don't think it went in my past the inside box .. not a scratch on the system itself and everything's been fine so far

Ordered a Blue 8/8/16/512 with the numeric keypad and Magic Trackpad on July 7th with an estimated delivery of 8/11-8/16. It quickly shifted to early August, and was actually delivered early on 7/26. Just set it up yesterday, and can’t wait to start truly using our first iMac!

I had evaluated things as much as I could - even used AR and placed it on my desk.

Most of the issues would not have been deal breakers - just things I preferred on the 5k. I did like the flat back on the 24 which is a major improvement over the 5k. Given the external brick for power and the size of SoC I did wonder if the whole “smarts” could have been in a brick for a “no chin, flat, slim“ monitor.

I did spend many weeks looking at it, reviewing this thread and other comparisons. I knew the issues that would be for and against and on balance if all worked out it would have been fine. The height/size was a major issue and I always knew this would be a deal breaker. I like a larger monitor and highDPI which is very restrictive.

I would have gone to the Apple shop to look at it but I have health issues along with OCD/anxiety and the current health situation rules that out. I spoke to Apple and was open and honest with sales. They said if for any reason I was not completely satisfied I could return it with no ill feeling.

The damaged box I suppose tainted the experience from start. It would have been a return anyway (see OCD issues - and when I say OCD I dont mean the “trendy” one everyone likes to say they are ”a little” but the often debilitating type). I have had over a dozen iMacs over the years - loved them all - and this is first box ever to have been damaged.

As you say, it has all worked out for the best. I will wait and see what happens next on Mx iMac and hopefully Apple will upgrade the 27”. One thing it has convinced me of is the Mx is the future and even if the new >27” has a premium price it will be worth paying extra to have what I really want.

In the meantime I think a MacBook Air is the best way in. I need a second desktop anyway as a backup (work from home etc). The air is a stunning machine for the money so a baseline M1 air will be ideal and a useful stopgap - it may even work with one of my external monitors.

Sorry if I caused any annoyance. It was not my intention and it was merely my own opinions and observations.

You’ll be fine. Open it and you’ll see that the packaging on these is completely over-engineered. You could literally throw these boxes out of a hovering helicopter 20’ above your front porch, and the computer would be fine. I’ve taken A LOT of Apple and other brands of computers out of packaging over the past 25 years, and this one is by far better packaged than anything else I’ve ever seen.

Yellow looks good. It looks more gold than yellow.

I think you are being far too critical and should just use the new computer and enjoy it. Apple made solid, good design decisions. The public was just used to the cold mausoleum inspired early 2000’s era designs, and the public wasn’t quite yet ready for such a change. Apple knows better. Trust their instinct.

My iMac finally arrived and it's beautiful... coming from a 2012 iMac 21.5", the display on my new one is simply mind-blowing. It turns out that the silver bezels blend it beautifully with my white wall behind.

However, I have noticed two things which I would like to run past you all who, just to check if you have similar issues:

  1. There is a tiny little spot on the upper right back of the iMac; it is not a dent, it is just a little spot where the coating seem to have chipped off. It is barely noticeable from a normal viewing distance and it actually does not bother me as the back will only ever face a white wall.
  2. It seems that there is a tiny little gap on the top edges of the display panel. I have attached a video and pictures. Is that normal and within a certain tolerance? I am not having the impression that the panel comes off, not at all, and I do not see any impact on the screen (quality) itself.
I guess I could go for a warranty return, however, I am wondering if it is worth the effort? Right now all Apple Stores and the authorised repair centres are closed here. Or I simply wait a couple of weeks until we are out of the lockdown and then initiate a replacement under the 1 year warranty.

What do you guys think?

Just another update on this matter here.. last week Tuesday DHL picked up the broken unit and this afternoon I received the replacement; less than one week, I am impressed.

The replacement device is perfect, no issues with the display, no dents/scratches, no coil whining at low display brightness etc.. I am very happy! :)

Very happy for you!

I’m very pleased with my new iMac in green. Rather pleasingly, the back colour is almost exactly the same shade of green as my living room walls (you can see some of that paintwork in the second picture) and the green is enhanced by the garden and bush outside the window.

I think the colour is further complemented by the walnut of the desk and the rimu in this main room.

It’s also a fantastic computer!
