Really interesting looking at this thread. Lots of people have an iPad next to their iMac, i'm curious what you use them for whilst working on your iMac?

Personally I’ve been using it as a secondary display via Sidecar, and it’s been giving me the itch to get the 12.9” ipp next time around.
Why not a real second screen to get actually usable screen space?

I agree with many of your points. As I tried to stress it was a personal observation and personal opinion. I simply prefer the larger 27" 5k display and the change in physical size was a deal breaker for me. I have no doubt the M1 is a superb computer and look forward to what Apple do with it. I just hope they find a way to replace the larger machine with something that works well - or at least fix the M1 mini sleep/wake issues so I can select my own monitor. I do not push the computer overly hard - most of my work is in terminal. I am a VIM, TeX, MD, Groff and terminal user so probably not a typical user - I never really did like doing much with the mouse!
Your observation of the sheer number of different hues going on was also my general reaction. I was at the Apple Store getting my AirPods Pro replaced and spent a lot of time with these machines. I think the general concept of the machine is lovely - I love that Apple went for bold colors - but I just simply didn’t and still don’t love the multi-tone execution. It’s not as though they’re simply different tones of the same color, some of these legitimately have two different colors (i.e. the Yellow to me was very gold on the back, but pastel yellow on the foot/chin/accessories. Just didn’t look great in person) So while I really want to add a fun pop of color to my study, I find myself liking the Silver option the most simply because it feels the least ‘confused’ to me. Again, to your point, this is entirely just my personal opinion. I can see why people love the colors (and they look great in these photos), this is just my own personal problem 😂

Ideally I would, but space constraints prevent me from doing that for now. Picture doesn't do it justice because I took everything off my desk when I set mine up. Now it's entirely too "lived in" to show off ;).

While far from perfect my iPad offers a stopgap for the few times when I really do need two screens for the time being. I do mostly media consumption on this computer anyway.

Been following this thread since it began. I love everyone’s set up ☺️

After months of waiting, I’ve finally been able to get my hands on my own iMac. I also created a video about what having the iMac means to me —

Thank you everyone for tiding me over with your set ups. I feel really inspired by everyone who’s posted and will begin building my setup to complement the new iMac.

Blue looks decent here, good video too.

For those of you'll that bought the 8GB version, how's it holding up?

They have some refurb models up on the Apple Store and I'm trying to decide if I should get an 8GB or 16GB version. I don't do anything heavy on my desktop. I used to do work on my desktop, but nothing major (MS Office programs). My current job gave me a work laptop (WFH) so I don't use my iMac for work. My current iMac (2017 version) has 16GB, but I'm wondering with the new M1 Macs if 8GB would be sufficient?

Zero issues w/ my 8GB, bought it on launch day & sim. to you it's not used for anything heavy so no regrets here.

Originally bought 8GB then returned it for 16GB. Figured I’m going to keep this for several years, might as well have more memory since it’s not upgradeable. If you can fit in into the budget, get it.

Thanks for your update. I forgot the memory wasn’t upgradable. It’s definitely better for me to get 16GB because I do want to keep my desktop for a couple of years.

Thanks for your update!
I have also had zero issues with 8GB of RAM. We would be considered light users. Only once did I see memory pressure not in the green zone.

Also, we trade in our iMac when AC ends. If we kept it longer, I might have considered more memory.

The previous iMac was a nice design for a long time, but seeing it right alongside the new iMac now makes the 21.5 and 27 design look dated and…chunky. The new minimalist aesthetic with the colours is a breath of fresh air. It’s eye-catching and will start conversations when someone sees it on your desk for the first time. It’s bright and cheerful—which we need these days—and revives Apple’s lost sense of enthusiasm. I suspect the new MacBooks will be something similar.
Since I said this we’ve gotten the new MacBook Pros.

From a function standpoint the redesigned MBPs are amazing and check off pretty much all the boxes. But design wise there is nothing really distinctive about them. Mind you there is a limit to how you can design a laptop. They look to be a quality built device, but aesthetically they’re meh.

From the rumours I find myself looking forward more to the forthcoming replacement for the MacBook Air.

I ended up going with the Purple 16GB/1TB refurbed model. It was cheaper than a customizable unit, and it has a faster delivery time - should be here by Thursday. Surprised that they had the 2021 iMac already in the refurbed area, but since they have a model of every color in every configuration, I'm assuming these may have been PR models or people just bought, used, and returned them within the 14 days. The only thing that sucks about buying the refurb model is that you can't do the monthly installments with your Apple Card, but at least I still get my cash back, plus an extra 2% from using Rakuten. I'm going to give my current iMac to my parents. They have a 2009 (or is 2007) iMac, so it's time for them to upgrade.

Let's see that setup! :)

Let's show those old school iMacs. This was my first iMac I got back in 2008 after my father upgraded to a newer one. I was quite happy with it, 24" were huge and for me a Computer and a TV.

Still a beautiful design and it will be soon converted to a modern M1 mac.

Every M1 iMac has that little whine, it's what makes it special ✨

Going a bit off topic here but is that a reason to concern about it? I don’t mind the whine as I always keep the brightness at max but will it create another problems in the future?
