In the past I usually update every 2 years or so, but since I have my 6s plus, I dont feel the need to upgrade as fast as I used to. I have my phone since may 2016 and its still fast, fluid and responsive. The screen is perfect for my needs and these days, I use my phone mostly for texting, calling, web browsing and media needs (music, videos) I dont play games anymore on it so I plan to keep this phone for at least another year, but probably two.

These days new phones are not as appealing as they were when it was a brand new "cool" tech. New features feels more like a gimmick to me now because I have everything I want on my phone right now. Plus with the battery replacement program, it will just make me keeps my phone longer.

Oh and like others said, new phone these days are too expensive for what new things they offer.

Usually upgrade every year i run my business off my iPhone, i am 95% happy with the X so unless the new "X" is something special i will keep it. I mean the X64GB was/is $1579 here, it's getting out of hand really, and the second hand market is not as good as it use to be.

Current 6S and SE working fine, why upgrade?

Succinct and true. The average consumer that has a smart phone or iPhone, and if it works exactly how they intend it to as a communication device, why would they want to upgrade to a device that will cost well over $1000? The answer is they don’t care to upgrade. The most heavy tech enthusiasts will upgrade to the more expensive iPhone, because that’s what they are attracted to.

We are six months away from new iPhones, including the introduction of two new models - the 6.1" LCD (call it the iPhone 9 for now) and the 6.5" OLED (call it the XS Plus for now). I feel like the purchasing decision this year is more difficult than ever. I have an iPhone 8+ now, but I am bumping up against my storage limit. I really need 256G. A 256G "10S Plus" will likely cost $1,400 or more, and I frankly don't know if I want to spend that, especially given I will likely be spending $1,500 on an updated iPad Pro in a couple of months. The LCD iPhone is really intriguing, but I can't go back to a non-dual camera. My best option may be to get an X or another 8+ now at 256G and wait for another year.

What are you guys thinking?
I will get the “XI” plus if it has 512 GB storage which makes it equal to the highest storage iPad.

Just a reminder to all who are still referring the next iPhone generation in 2018 and later, the “X” character number only happens one time as it represents “tenth” iPhone anniversary and is not intended to be used for the incoming and next generation of iPhones after it.

Apple is not going to offer 512 GB iPhone. iPads are completely different because users tend to store Way more on an iPad then they do an iPhone. Not to mention, the price point for 512 GB iPhone would be ridiculously expensive. And I doubt many in here could actually fill 512 GB of storage on an iPhone. Even 256 GB is difficult to fill for many.

I am still on iPhone 7 so I may upgrade. As someone said earlier I got a promo when I got the 7 and got it for free after bill credits, so I am not in a rush to upgrade.

I think I may be personally done with wanting anything new. Not too many features being added for me to get a new phone yearly. I have an 8 and it is a great phone but I also love my SE and use it a lot. For my purposes the phones offer the same quality to me. In that case the SE is cheaper and has my headphone jack. I most likely am back on a 2-3 year upgrade cycle.

I have an iPhone 8. Not even the plus just the standard 8.

I should hate the thing, the design is ancient. It’s not new or exciting but I don’t, I love it. It just feels solid and I adore the gold colour. I don’t regret getting this over the X and saving £300.

So, I’ll be keeping this until next years iPhone releases and seeing what happens then.

dont fall off that high horse. might hurt.
There’s nothing about that quote that suggests they are in a high horse. It sounded like a sensible choice to me.

Reviewing my own choices I’m starting to think if my 6S is still working as well as it is now in 6 months time, is it really work me upgrading? I could just get a 30 sim contract and use it until it dies. More and more people seem to be going this route in my part of the world.

At the end of the day nobody else cares what your phone looks like so if you’re happy with it that’s all that matters. Nobody will judge you for owning an iPhone that looks like the majority of other iPhones used throughout the world and the iPhone 8 will be a speedy device for at least the next 2 years.

That's exactly what I'm doing with my 6S now, on Ting. I pay ~$22/mo for service and have owned my phone outright for a while now. There just isn't a must-have feature or something I see in the new phones.

Of course, in the context of the post to which I was responding—adding $42 monthly to one’s retirement for 2-3 years by foregoing an iPhone upgrade is very sensible.

I do it myself.

I just don’t lecture other people on it.

Is their a history between you two that I’ve missed? It just looks like he’s answering the question in the thread, not lecturing us.

I used to upgrade every 2 years but when they released the iPhone 8 last year i struggled to justify it against my iPhone 6s depending on whats offered this year i may upgrade to a 7/8 unless this new model has something special

I won’t Buy day one new iPhone ever again unless incredible promo.

I used to purchase every iPhone day 1 2007-2015. Finally skipped iPhone 7. Got iPhone 8 Plus with $300 sams club promo gift card.

grin. no history. I thought a prior poster was preachy as the first in 4 pages of comments to be sure we knew their moral reason for not spending money on new iPhone in Fall 2018. The-Real-Deal82 disagreed with my view. no biggie. ‘nuf said.

I’m still none the wiser on the issue here but I guess I wasn’t meant to be. Fair enough.
