I believe my 6gb Roger's plan is quite enough for VOIP...

As for this fee... I dont agree with it but IF it's to be there, I wish it'll be the same as the connection fee PAYG Skype users pay which is free for ppl with an unlimited subscription..

Just tried a 3g call and it kicks butt!

great to hear! Can't wait until i can try it out on iPhone OS 4.0 with its multitask abilities with voip.

Finally! Been waiting for this forever! Too bad they have to charge after Aug 2010 on Skype to Skype calls on 3G but oh well.. at least they got it running as of now!

Wow, guys, I've been doing Skype over 3G with a jailbroken phone for almost a year with 3G Unrestrictor. Works beautifully. I see a couple of others have posted the same thing. Well worth the $2 it cost on Cydia - and NO monthly fee from either AT&T or Skype.

because they're a business, and by definition, businesses exist to make money. they've offered free services for years -- and they still do. now they've identified a new feature that users want, but they've decided to charge for it.

that's business. why is that bad?

Yes, yes, free market capitalism means a business can do no wrong if its activities are to generate profits. Everyone should understand that, right? Are you Larry Kudlow in real life? :D

If the plan is to charge for Skype to landline/cellphone numbers, that makes sense; they already do that, and it's cheap enough at under $3 per month for a Skype Pro account. If they're talking about charging for Skype to Skype over 3G, that's disappointing. That type of call is free on laptops and WiFi, and I don't see any valid reason for Skype to differentiate if a user if the user is on 3G vs WiFi though, unless the wireless carrier is collecting some sort of fee from Skype to allow this. If that's the case, it's one more reason to hate AT&T, and one more reason that people really should consider stepping outside of the Apple/AT&T walled garden/prison and look to jailbreak solutions or Android phones on other networks.

Doesn't Fring already allow free Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G?

And, more importantly, will it continue to allow it after this latest Skype development?

Question

Question: so I don't need to sign up for a skype plan to place calls to mobile and land lines, cause I just made a call to my moms cell phone. Will I see the charges when I sign up for my next month of unlimited Internet for iPad?

Thought that You could only make skype to skype calls when you don't have money on your skype account.

I have been waiting on this. Now all I need is 4.0 to come to the iPad and I can drop my iPhone and go iPad only with a bluetooth headset or headphones.

That said, I will not be updating to the new Skype app and will keep the current version + 3G Unrestrictor. Thanks to that I've had 3G VoIP forthe longest time I an recall.

Great plan. Except... it's stupid.

If they are going to charge for Wifi calls, your solution won't be free, either. If not, the new version can be used with 3G Unrestrictor too. There's no difference.

This is why I don't understand how AT&T could allow this. U are like me. Why would AT&T risk losing iPhone customers? I'm def not a business major.

Going to have to agree with the general consensus about this latest version of Skype...

...still no push notifications for when Skype isn't running
...charging for Skype-to-Skype calls (I can understand Skype-to-phone, but what about all those years and millions of Skype desktops, laptops, and hardware devices that don't pay? Why target and gouge iPhone and iPad users?)
...no native or universal support for iPad
...and just overall slow to develop, release, fix, and update.

Waited too long for a killer app that ended up killing itself in the end. Time to check out the alternatives.

Seriously though, as Apple users, we should be used to third-party case manufacturers and wireless carriers gouging us with premium prices.

...$10 more for 3G data and separated cost for text messaging (compared to the original iPhone plan)
...$14 a month for insurance with a $200 deductible
...$50 for iPad silicone slipcases
...$30 for docks or data cables.

How is this any different?

skype has always been greedy for money, but i see this as a precedent and i`m positive google / yahoo will make a similar app for there calls and they will be 100% free and better, i just hope apple will not back out on the deal of allowing this applications to work.
Plus if they plan to make the new iphone a video conferencing one voice over ip is the way to go since i do not see the cell networks been able to accept this new feature.

As long as that "small fee" is less than $15 that Line2 charges. Ridiculous!

Don't forget that Line2 gives you a 1-800 number and unlimited calling included - It's a small business oriented service and $15 is a great deal considering all the features you get.

You still have to pay $8+ for unlimited skype + $3 for your own phone number, so it's not all that cheaper.

At&t is not dictating the cost of anything. I do not know what the hell you people are thinking. Skype sees this as a chance to rake in some money on a product, which they should.

Also, just because your foreign telco has not said anything about certain apps working over 3g means nothing also. They are probably just letting at&t go out front and take all the bullets for them, meanwhile they agree.

I never said AT&T was dictating costs. Unfortunately, AT&T's policies about what apps can be used over 3G affects users of the iPhone outside of the US and AT&Ts network. There are many countries with 3G infrastructures significantly more advanced that AT&Ts. There are also countries with telcos that do not give a damn what you are using their network for as long as it is paid for. And as I said in my original post, there are other cell phones with 3G VOIP apps, and that as far as I know the 3G restriction has only ever applied to the iPhone, even on AT&Ts network. I find it very hard to believe that any of the telcos I am using, or have used are letting AT&T take the bullets for them. In fact I would imagine they laugh at AT&Ts poor 3G infrastructure. The one I am using now is currently piloting LTE in Riyadh, so they are almost ready to move beyond 3G which AT&T is still rolling out.

As far as the small fee goes, read my original post. The information about this is still unclear, will it affect just the iPhone or will it be Skype over 3G in general, will it be skype to landline/cellphone, or skype to skype? I can use Skype over 3G from a laptop using a 3G dongle, I have been doing this for years, even for video chats, to other people using the same system in another country. I was doing this before the iPhone was even released. Yet for the privilege of doing it on the iPhone I am supposed to pay? So I am using the same network, the same application, the same technology, just a different device. How can this be justified?

Small fee in August. Maybe.

Why would they wait until August to start charging a small fee? Perhaps because they don't want to cripple, oh I don't know, a different network?

You mean a company is monetizing the premium service of calls over 3G? This is an OUTRAGE I tell you! How dare they think they can make money, this is the United States, everything should be like free man.

Seriously, this is what business is all about . They (e.g drug dealers, prostitutes, banks) get you in with the 'gateway features' and then begin the process of tacking on extras for fees. This is just how business is done.

Well... Apple had pretty much gotten rid of all my desires to jailbreak with 4.0!
Even got rid of VOIP over WiFi rule. But, now Skype has me wanting to use 3G Unrestrictor again.

Why all the communication networks hadn't evolve into data networks? Why the telco carriers have still voice only services and continue to charge enourmous fees for services that are subpar?

Anything available over an Internet connection should be covered by the Internet data fee, period!

I prefer to pay a one time fee for the app and then use the app without any extra fees.

Skype has been the greatest VOIP player in the market.
Their international and call to phone lines fees were reasonable.

The tradicional carrriers will always see VOIP calls as a threat to their traditional business model, when one of them starts to do things differently and becomes the leader things will change for good, I mean for the end users.

Why apple hasn't exploited iChat?

Thought that You could only make skype to skype calls when you don't have money on your skype account.

Nevermind. It was an error on skypes part I guess. It's not letting me make mobile or land line calls for free now. It allowed me through the first time, but not now. Thought I had the "MAGIC iPad"

Seeing as their wording says free until at least August 2010, I'd imagine they are going to see how the usage changes their bandwidth consumption and implement accordingly, if it doesn't change much, they probably won't bother charging.

no they say end of the year 2010

So what?

I find it humorous that people are complaining about Skype not giving away free service to everyone forever.

The last time I checked, Skype was a for-profit business, with shareholders, employees and expenses. It is their obligation to make a profit and to keep their customers.

Customers that pay zero are not customers.

Happily, there are still some remnants of competition in the US. And therefore, it is reasonable to expect that if Skype's price tag is too high, there will be other places to go to get your needs satisfied for less money.

VoIP is not complicated any more. Anyone with app development experience can pull this off.

skype has always been greedy for money, but i see this as a precedent and i`m positive google / yahoo will make a similar app for there calls and they will be 100% free and better.

Google and Yahoo will both be eventially charging a monthly fee. The Internet will not be free forever.

i`m positive google / yahoo will make a similar app for there calls and they will be 100% free and better,

I was counting on you to make a similar app - 100% free or better please. Yes, please make it better than free. After you make it then pay me to use it.

To Skype: How is skype over 3g any different than skype over wi-fi?

From Skype: We grew tired of free-loaders on our network sucking resources and demanding free upgrades. We decided we would rather have 1 million users paying a small fee for the service than 10 million using it for free. This 3G announcement was a nice way of saying it.
