I think Slingbox will come eventually. Unfortunately I also think there's a good chance it'll be restricted to wifi only which would be pretty disappointing, especially considering I already have a Palm TX that can play it then.

General consensus on Sling forums seems to be that they are close to releasing an iphone app but they are deliberately playing the possibility down so as not to raise hopes prematurely. Apparently, Sling got burned with such promises for Slingplayer on the Mac and are determined not to repeat their mistake.

Wont happen, Sling needs 3G or faster. We people that have the 3G iphone with the best screen of any phone out there will not be limited to just Wifi. Most all 3G smart phones can use a sling player for there smart phones. They will not limit the iPhone to just Wifi.

Sling has said in the past that they wont develop an app until apple comes out with the 3G iPhone, just because it wont work that well over EDGE.

Apple responded with a 3G iphone, and Sling is going to respond with a sling player app.

To all the people who have said that Apple will not allow Live tv on the iphone check out this story on This site

even though it is digital tv, it is still tv none the less. So with that being said, get ready and prepared to see sling player app at the end of this year or first or second quarter of next year. :D

That service is done over wifi, and involves carrying around a seperate device.

Why have they not responded yet? Whats taking so long?

"Best screen"? Err.. no. There are plenty of 3G phones with VGA or higher resolution.

A lot of carriers specifically prohibit streaming video over their network.

Even though a lot of us (ahem) do so anyway. ;)

As eplchamps0304 already said, that's just using WiFi to connect to a TV tuner that you carry around in your other pocket.

Google "packetvideo" for the company that's probably making this one as well. (PacketVideo doesn't sell directly to consumers... they only want to sell via carriers, alas.)

When I was talking about alot of 3G phones already allow the sling app, I was talking about AT&T service. there is nothing that will prevent this from coming to the iphone. also even though the digital tv has a seperate device and you have to be on wifi, You can still watch TV.

Some people think that streaming TV on the iPhone is competing with itunes. this proves that apple will allow it, and they must not think it will compete with itunes. :D

Can you give me examples as to what phone screens are better than the iphone? not just copy's of the iphone. ;)

and the reason they are taking so long is because number 1 They wanna get it right and, number 2 They have stated that the iphone app will not come out until after the blackberry app. (check out other posts of mine to get link to that article)

So with that being said, when you see the blackberry app come out, just know that the next thing sling will release will be the iphone sling app. :D

Get it right? Whats taking them so long to get it right. Orb have yet to get into the app store as well.

Day late and a dollar short for me. OrbLive is available via the app store and it works just fine. Video only works over wifi but there are ways around that. Audio works over 3g without having to mess with anything and that also includes the use of uSirius / uXM to stream Sirius and XM. I've been using it all morning and it works great. Sorry Sling, maybe one day you'll get on the ball and not take forever to do anything. I still have that Blackberry if that app ever makes it to market and I still care by then.

a few months back sling was hiring for a developer to work stricktly on the iPhone app. So they are building from scrap. If I was making the best app that will put apple over the top, I would like to get it right the first time and not have to go back and fix bugs that will give them bad press.

Sling has announced that they are working on an iPhone sling app but will not give details because if a problem arises and they have to wait a month then that will equal bad press. No one likes bad press.

Sling will make it's way onto the iPhone. There are people on this thread, ( kid ) to name one who was a beta tester for the orb app. It will come to but people have to be patient

Most carriers have a clause prohibiting video/music streaming. In reality, as long as you're not abusing it, they let it go.

But a big difference is, people with other phones quietly use Slingbox and therefore ATT can kind of look the other way. If the iPhone gets Slingbox, it's big news and probably going to be a big hit on ATT's capabilities.

Can you give me examples as to what phone screens are better than the iphone?

Seriously? There have been VGA phones for a long time now. And many new ones are VGA or higher.

Many of the Glofish phones are VGA 640x480. Toshiba had an 800x480 last year. The HTC Diamond series that everyone (including ATT, Sprint, Verizon) is going to sell is VGA. There's a Korean Samsung Omnia with 800x480. There are other phones with 1024x480+.

Here's a partial list of VGA or higher devices (phones and PDAs, sort through them).

This is not mine but what I found on another site. this is to say yes there are some higher resolution screens out there but for some reason the iphone does look alot better when playing video or movies. but again this is just my opinion.

Screen Sharpness: How the iPhone Compares in PPI Versus Other WM Phones

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most people that pick up an iPhone are amazed at how sharp the screen is. It's got a 3.5" screen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels. That makes for a pixel density of 160 pixels per inch (ppi). The higher the value, the sharper the screen appears. How does this compare to other WM devices we know and love? Here's a roundup, with the screen resolution (W x H), diagonal size, and ppi of some popular devices:

Apple iPhone, 320x480, 3.5": 160ppi

vs.

Palm Treo 750, 240x240, 2.6": 130ppi
HTC Touch, Wizard, Hermes, and Kaiser, 240x320, 2.8": 132ppi
HTC Athena X7501, 640x480, 5": 160ppi
Motorola Q, 320x240, 2.4": 166ppi
HTC S710 Vox, 240x320, 2.4": 166ppi
Samsung BlackJack, 320x240, 2.3": 173ppi
Dell Axim X50v/X51v, 480x640, 3.8": 210ppi
HTC Universal, 640x480, 3.6": 222ppi
i-mate Ultimate 9150, 480x640, 2.6", 307ppi
Toshiba G900, 800x480, 3": 310ppi

While the most common resolution today on any so called smartphone is what is called QVGA (320x480 or 480x320 depending upon if it is in portrait or horizontal mode)

More on this here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QVGA

The iPhone is runing what would be HALF of VGA resolution:

but to get back to what this thread is about is no matter your or my opinion on what screen looks the best. The sling App for the iphone is coming and will look great on the iphones HVGA 320X480 Screen :D

What others have you seen? As the article you quoted points out, many other devices (other than the QVGA ones) have a higher PPI than the iPhone.

Another question is the color resolution. Most are 16-bit (64K colors). Apple doesn't let out their resolution.

It'll be interesting to compare the Blackberry Storm as well. It's a 3.25-inch display with 480 x 360 resolution at 184 ppi.

Personally, I'm less about the colors and res than about whether it's a transflective LCD or not. I hate not being able to see outdoors!

I think you meant 320x240. QVGA is quarter VGA.

In any case, yes, I'm dying for Sling on the Apple devices. I use it all the time on others.

all the stuff I posted was not mine as I said at the start if my post. I am one of the biggest promoters of getting sling on the iphone. It will look amazing on the iphone screen no matter what the specks are. compared side by side iphone will look the best with sling hands down. :D

Sling will get accepted in the app store once they get submitted. Orblive was finally accepted, the app is 9.99, but the biggest downer is that it only works wi-fi. For that reason, I'm not getting rid of my beta version, which works over 3G and WI-FI.

I'm as hopeful as you guys for sling on the iPhone, but I can't see it coming in the near future.

Think about AT&T's 3G right now, especially on the iPhone, it's abysmal. People dissatisfied with the performance blame AT&T and Apple, which is not good for sales or their stock prices. If AT&T tells Apple that its network couldn't handle even 1,000 iPhones running Sling, do you think Apple will allow it, only to hear more and more complaints?

Wifi only I could see, but that makes sling a lot less attractive.

AT&T have tons of 3G WM phone users using sling as it is and have you heard anything about it affecting the network? The answer is no. There are alot of people who use sling on a daily basis and the network is fine with it. Sling will not be any different with the iphone. If they were going to make the app to only run on WIFI dont you think sling would have had an app ready when the first iphone came out?

Sling said in a statement that they would not make an app for the iphone until it is 3G. Because of streaming quality. Now that there is a 3G iphone thet are hard at work trying to get this done for us.

Apple and AT&T are 2 different companies. as long as the apps on the iphone does not break any rules that AT&T has set up, Example ( tethering ) then they will be allowed on the iphone.

One question to consider is this, Windows mobile smart phones and iphone uses the same 3G network. The windows mobile smart phones have been able to use the sling box and player for years with no complaints from AT&T. what makes you think that AT&T will only allow WM phones to use sling on the same network and not the iphone?

They are both using the same network and would use the same amount of bandwith.

The answer to this is, AT&T wont give a crap, Sling is not hiding the fact that they are making an app and AT&T has not said a word,

Orb was released for the iphone and AT&T still has not said a word. You can stream tv, satalite radio, Ect and it was allowed in.

Just face it people Sling is coming to the iPhone:D

AT&T gives a huge crap and it's usually right on it's users, this being one example. Orb video is limited to wifi only. You need to jailbreak the phone and hack it to make Orb work over 3g. And it does work over 3g. It even works relatively well over EDGE, so it's not like it's inefficient. But Apple made them limit video to wifi. Why? If I had to guess it's because AT&T is a toilet company with a grossly overloaded network because they're more interested in doing lines of coke off the back of a $10000 a night hooker than they are in upgrading their network. So you and I get these arbitrary limitations and I'm sure Slingplayer, if it's ever actually released through the app store, will have the same limitations imposed on it.

Bitter much?

There is a solution: VoipOver3G. :)

It tricks your phone into thinking it's on Wi-Fi, when it's really not.

Of course, you have to jailbreak for that.

Bitter much?

I'm not bitter, I'm right. For all the money AT&T takes in everything month, you'd think "more bars everywhere" and "America's fastest 3G network" would be more than meaningless marketing slogans. But that's all they are. And I think Apple only needs to make one more retarded, totally self-centered decision and they'll be eligible to advise Bush.
