Day late and a dollar short for me. OrbLive is available via the app store and it works just fine. Video only works over wifi but there are ways around that. Audio works over 3g without having to mess with anything and that also includes the use of uSirius / uXM to stream Sirius and XM. I've been using it all morning and it works great. Sorry Sling, maybe one day you'll get on the ball and not take forever to do anything. I still have that Blackberry if that app ever makes it to market and I still care by then.

Curious how you were able to run xmu through Orb?

AT&T gives a huge crap and it's usually right on it's users, this being one example. Orb video is limited to wifi only. You need to jailbreak the phone and hack it to make Orb work over 3g. And it does work over 3g. It even works relatively well over EDGE, so it's not like it's inefficient. But Apple made them limit video to wifi. Why? If I had to guess it's because AT&T is a toilet company with a grossly overloaded network because they're more interested in doing lines of coke off the back of a $10000 a night hooker than they are in upgrading their network. So you and I get these arbitrary limitations and I'm sure Slingplayer, if it's ever actually released through the app store, will have the same limitations imposed on it.

sorry to rub it in but orb just had an update. You can now stream video and music over 3G and EDGE.;)

We will see sling. Just face it. Orb was the first, and sling is in the works polishing the app, and when you see the app for the blackberry then you know that the iPhone app is right behind it.:D

Yep, I restored the phone and updated last night and it works fine. Which is actually more bad news for Sling, if you ask me. That was pretty much the last excuse for the Sling apologists...Apple was probably jerking them around because of bandwidth issues...but with Orb working over 3G and EDGE, that's probably a load of crap also.

Orb wasn't just first, it works great and it has a ton more functionality than Slingplayer. The only downsides are that you need a PC and it has to be on. Given the price of cheap PCs these days and how little power they can use, however, the price difference between a PC and a high end Slingbox is getting minimal. So despite having two Slingboxes, I have zero sympathy for Sling. They've dragged their feet on every single thing they've done and I'm sure the thing holding Sling back is Sling, period. They deserve to lose customers this time, maybe they'll finally learn a lesson about jerking around customers.

This is my perception too.

Leaving the PC on is a dealbreaker for me. I also want a direct connection to my DVR. As for Sirius/XM, I'd much prefer a dedicated app.

The software is actually already complete, they're just waiting for approval from unspecified parties (either Apple, Sirius, or both):

Bah!!

When I read this I thought it was an indication that the Sling Player client for iPhone was done and just waiting release.

Go start a separate thread for Starplayer, for the 10 people who might want it! :):D:D

If/when a slingplayer app for the iPhone launches Sling is going to sell an extra hundred thousand slingboxes within a matter of months. I hope they know that!

One question to consider is this, Windows mobile smart phones and iphone uses the same 3G network. The windows mobile smart phones have been able to use the sling box and player for years with no complaints from AT&T. what makes you think that AT&T will only allow WM phones to use sling on the same network and not the iphone?

For starters, because Apple totally controls the apps we can use. Jobs already said high bandwidth apps are not on their good list.

OTOH, people with WM phones can load whatever the heck they want.

You are correct that Apple controls what goes on the app store, But have you been under a rock for the last couple of days?

OrbLive was released onto the app store and you can stream Music VIDEO and whatever you want ove EDGE 3G and WIFI. if they dont consider that a bandwidth hog I dont kow what is.

Apple will allow sling onto the app store when it is ready.

Sling reps have already said that they will not release the iphone app until after the app for the blackberry comes out. Like I have said before, When you see the blackberry app then get excited because the iphone app is next.:D

*laughing* Actually, just got back from taking my daughter on a Disney cruise. So, yep, I have been.

Sweet ! Assuming they let it continue to sell, that is. Apple rejects radio app

An additional reason that Apple might refuse a Sling player application for the iPhone is that you need a Slingbox to use it.

Apple sells this stuff and takes a 50% profit off the top, and probably doesn't want to deal with issuing hundreds of refunds every year to the idiots that think the application is going to let them watch Live TV without the need for additional hardware.

all Apple has to do is have sling put in the app description, "Requires additional hardaware not sold by Apple" or something to this effect.

as long as sling writes into the app description that this app requires a slingbox then there would be no one to blame but the moron who does not take the time to read what the app does and what you need for it.

IMHO I think if someone finds the app "Sling player app" 2 things will happen

1. Someone who already owns a sling box will know what it is right off the bat.

2. someone will see that it says "Sling player", do the research on it or read the description to find out what it is.

This will not be an issue.

Hope you all had a good trip :D

Yeah I saw that, Not sure what they may have done as there are a few radio apps on the app store. (AOL Radio, Pandora) and they have been on there for a while. I listen and use AOL Radio every morning to listen to Opie and Anthony on New York K-Rock 92.3 cbs radio station.

AT&T has never said a word to me about the bandwidth I use, and I use alot. they have not pulled it from the app store.

IMHO I belive that apple may have thought that ORB would pull alot of bandwidth so they said WIFI only, when ORB explained and showed that it would not and that the beta proved this, they allowed the update to allow EDGE and 3G.

Sling will happen and it will be able to use over 3G and Wifi,

IMHO NO Edge, because sling said that you cant get a good stream over edge for their system. maybe in the future they can improve this but for know I think it will only be under 3G and WIFI. :D

Interesting.

So no one thinks that Apple's going to come out with their own "Sling" type app and hardware?

I dont think apple will.

someone said at one time on this thread that they thought that apple would reject sling because Apple was going to turn the appletv into a mac version of the slingbox.

It was later said that this was false because of the hardware and things required to do something like this, Also AT&T are trying to get thier TV thing off the ground as well and I dont think it will do to well as alot of people know sling is coming to the iphone soon, :D

But we all shall see

I doubt it. I forget who bought Sling offhand but it was some fat media corporation with enough money to bring a lot of pain to Apple if they so desired. It's a shame they can't funnel some of that money into Sling so they can hire a real development staff.

Again, I think most of the guesses as to why there's no Slingplayer yet can easily be shot down with one word: Orb. And again, I'd bet a paycheck there's no Slingplayer yet simply because Sling is the slowest software company on the face of the earth. I would not be the least bit surprised to hear Sling hasn't even submitted a "serious" app to Apple yet.

we will not know until sling gets into the app store and sling can tell what the hickups were if any. Sling is a company that is going to get the app right before they just put it out there.

Apple is doing the same thing with push. Sling has learned from apple's mistake. Apple announced that we would all have push in Sept. They ran into problems and now no one knows when it will come out. Apple is not saying a word because they cant, they have their foot in their mouth.

Sling does not want to do that which I dont blame them, They have told us the basics and all they can,

1. Sling app for iphone 3g is in the works
2. It will be released after the blackberry app.

So people please be patient. :D

Actually it was Echostar (Dish Network) that bought Sling. They are building sling capabilities into their next gen of sat boxes, which I think was their primary goal in buying Sling.

The problem is that they might view Sling's consumer business as secondary and not want to spend the money on developing better Sling products for retail distribution.

I have years in the telecommunications industry and one thing is for sure, all of these big telecom companies are run by morons.

Apple has approved cast catcher update.

This means that apple must have had a change of heart on what they consider bandwidth hog apps.

This is just better news for sling as there is nothing to hold them back.:D
