So I received a replacement jet black iPhone 7+ a week ago and I've had it out of a case since I got it. Absolutely zero scratches anywhere. I'm definitely more careful with it than I was my 6s, but it's nothing I haven't gotten used to.

Mine isn't doing so hot. I let it sit on the center console of my car on occasion which it really doesn't seem to like. Noticed too late unfortunately. I expected it to scratch easily but was hoping for a bit more resistance than this.

EDIT: It's worth saying this is exactly what I did with my 6 Plus, and 6S Plus Space Grey, and it never had any noticeable scratches.

It definitely doesn't look like it's holding up as well as the other finishes, but that's expected.

Yep, that's what the disclaimer is all about. Many people haven't had any experience with the glossy black iPhone 3G/3GS, which was susceptible to the same thing. Or they've forgotten how fingerprint- and swirl mark-magnet it was because they're used to gold/white/light Space Gray matte aluminum.

Those who've managed not to scratch their black iPhone 3G/3GS will be able to do the same with the JB iPhone 7. However, if you treat it the same as the matte aluminum models that we've had in the last few years, scratches will be more obvious.

Been using my caseless for a couple of weeks now.
Examined under the right conditions you can see hundreds of micro scratches.
Still looks amazing under normal conditions, really pleased with my decision to keep it as I don't think it's going to get into a state that will bother me.

Took mine to Genius Bar to get confirmation that upper bezel was not misaligned. Genius scratched it all up between her taking it to the back and then trying to clean it on the wooden table. She didn't place it on a cloth.

After minimal words from me, they ordered a replacement for me. Just have to wait for it to come in. I wasn't mad but not pleased. Oh well.

Well, I'm certifiable OCD about phones lol, so had to comment. I thought getting the JB would be, umm, therapeutic haha - really. I dug it that much ...

I do keep my JB in a Apple silicon case since it has micro fiber - almost any plastic case will garf it, plus the silicon is kinda grippy.

I took it out, went to my usual "cleaning t-shirt" (it was clean too;) and went to town to get the finger prints off ... and I wasn't terribly gentle persay - not ONE single micro abrasion (checked in bright ass fluorescents:)

So, not sure I'm ready to go streaking with it yet, but was happy to report that the t-shirt was safe (for me anyways)

Cheers

careful there with that Apple silicon case, its one big lint magnet...imagine pieces of lint rubbing between the case and your iPhone ;)

rocking my jetblack Phone naked...more then 2 weeks, no single visible scratch. Use this jetblack iPhone with common sense (not in same pocket as keys and coins) and you will be fine!

She did say she had never held one before. It was her fault but I wasn't all angry about it which probably helped since they were rather understanding about it.
Lead tech said they haven't put anything in place yet on how to handle the Jet Black devices. She anticipates they will soon.

Gone back to Matte. Had my JB since Saturday and it was perfect until I took it to work. By mid day it had a couple of new scratches and I only laid it on my laptop lid! Too much upkeep to keep perfect. Shame, as when clean, it's stunning.

That really sucks.
This is exactly why I changed my mind and went with the matte black. To me, the matte black has just as much 'sex appeal' as the jet black but doesn't require the unbelievable amount of babying to keep it looking nice all the time. Sure, it's slippery like the other normal colors but if I feel like I'm going to be in a situation where I could be clumsy (gym, on a boat, hiking, at a concert), it goes in a case and I continue to be worry free.

Except for one day when I was in the hospital for a procedure, mine has been naked since I got it (a week after launch day).

There are a few micro abrasions that I couldn't capture, and one longer scratch that I managed to get a shot of. IRL, I have to hold it at a specific angle in bright light to see any of them.

I love how this looks and feels, and I am not at all bothered by the tiny scratches. I still wipe it on my shirt or jeans, still set it down on hard surfaces, etc.

ETA: the parallel lines above the scratch in the second picture are smudges, not scratches.

I've had mine for just a few days but I had a Zagg Invisishield installed on both front and back. Sides are exposed but so far so good.

I'll chime in to say I am THOROUGHLY enjoying mine. It's just such a nice finish - it looks great and feels great. It's particularly nice when it's cool to touch, and you are reminded that it's not plastic but indeed a polished aluminium.

The glossy, tackier to the touch finish does make me more confident that I won't drop it as easily, however I know that I'm kidding myself to think I'll never drop it (even though I'm pretty careful, I've had very few drops and no smashed screen, and I tend to just use the Apple leather case), and obviously dropping it with no case is going to end in some damage.

As for scuffs or 'micro abrasions', at this stage it's still almost perfect. I suspect it will accumulate some but I think with appropriate care it should remain pretty good based on what I've seen so far.

I don't have a link as I had it installed at a Zagg kiosk in a local mall in the Washington DC area mall where I live. In fact the back shield was cut to order (I watched the guy do the install on the front and then offered the back as well for extra $).

Just a thanks again to those who offered up opinions on the "grippiness" of the JB. I bit the bullet yesterday as my local Apple Store had some in stock. Holy hell I can't believe just how much more comfortable I am holding this thing caseless, something I could never do with my 6+. Not that it's going to be impossible to drop, but it's a world of difference from the brushed aluminium.

Of course I played with the matte black in the store, but it felt no different to me than the old one did. Very happy chappie, makes a change :)

nice! did you get the regular or Plus jetblack?

After 2 weeks the regular jetblack I am thinking of selling it and buying a jetblack iPhone 7 Plus. I am just worried I will have a hard time to adept to the Plus...
