Hey everyone, is this normal? I just got this device a week ago and use it in an Apple leather case. I'm very careful with it. I've noticed all these swirl marks under light. I only gently wiped it with a microfibre cloth to take the photos attached here, but the marks were already there.

Is it normal? Or should I get my phone replaced?

Those are the micro scratches . To put it short your phone got scratched by rubbing with the case itself

Lol great! It even has a couple of deeper scratches I don't know how they got there since I've taken such good care of it!

This seems like too much upkeep and might be a problem down the track, thinking of going to matte. Thoughts owners?

Jet Black is about the look and feel. I have had mine caseless since day one, and I love it. I don't shine lights on it, looking for small scratches. The grip and feel are all I care about. If you are likely to shine lights and worry about these little scratches, you should definitely return it.

Same here. Loving my jet black iPhone 7 Plus!

Thing is, I can see scratches and marks under my normal home spotlights. Without trying to go looking for them. When I first took it out of the box I noticed lots of scratch marks around the Flash and near the camera.

Is it possible I have a dud jet black finish? Because I do love the look and feel!

I also had some scratches on my Jet Black out of the box. They're part of the reason I'm thinking about going mostly caseless. Not worth exchanging unless something else is wrong with the phone.

I also have a couple of really visible deep scratches I can feel and also see very easily towards the lower half of my phone. I'm starting to think I might have a dud finish and should just replace it for another jet black...

And you still put a case on it

I did not notice any scratches on mine when I got. I wasn't really looking or very worried about it tho because I knew what to expect already from normal use. Currently have a skinomi body wrap on it, so even if there were scratches, I can't see. I recommend that or bestskinsever.

That looks great! Yeah I still put a case on it haha, but my deep scratches would be visible even in your lighting. I think I'll just get it replaced and get a skin to go on top!

Probably the best idea. Those scratches will bother you for as long as you know about them and would me crazy if I had to keep thinking about those kinds of things.
Especially as expensive as these devices are. I recommend not wasting any time on ordering the skin tho, one I ordered from Amazon still hasn't come in

Yessir, on Christmas Eve :) wanted to take one last pic before covering it up. I imagine so, was not willing to find out haha

Thanks for that, I'm in Australia so shipping takes at least a week for these skins to come down under! I'll order one now and get my phone exchanged. If they were just microabrasions, I would be fine with it. But the main deep scratches that are visible even in low light a week in and came out of the box are driving me nuts lol

I don't think Apple will do an exchange for scratches. You will probably have to return and rebuy.

What about scratches that are documented as being on the phone straight out of the box? Doubt I'll exchange, especially since it'd probably be a refurb, but I assume there's some leniency there.

I'm honestly surprised three months into production they're still shipping scratched Jet Black iPhones. It's probably because the same equipment doesn't scratch the other finishes, but it should've been addressed by now.

I'm returning and purchasing again, probably the best way

In that case you are at the mercy of the individual employee you are dealing with. I'm not sure how to prove they came right out of the box but I'm sure Apple will help as best they can short of them opening the box with you, there's not much proof you can offer. That being said, they might exchange it for customer service reasons, to keep the customer happy.

I have a picture from when I was pulling the plastic off, since I noticed it right away. Only noticeable in bright lighting, but still annoying. Still, the next iPhone could have a more serious problem. A dead pixel would probably be worse lol.

If still within return period, it shouldn't be a problem - the scratches are normal cosmetic wear we nit pick about and not serious damage to reject the return. He noted he has only had it for about a week.

The phone scratches worse when in a case.Little pieces of sand grit get trapped in the sides and scratch the finish. You cant even use a wet wrap as a cover because removing that body protector removes the iphone text and the other info on the back of the device. If you are like me and have OCD about scratchesmreturn yours ASAP.I got the Jet Black, babyed it carefully and yet I saw a small scratch besides the LED flash on Day 4 so I returned mine for a Matte Black.Currently 2 months later its as good as new (Trust me I squint and try hard as I can to find scratches if they are there because of my terrible OCD) and arguably looks better than a scratched jet black.

With AC+, and realizing that I developed micro scratches even in the Apple leather case, I decided to just take it out and use it completely baseless. After a year or whatever, I'll get a replacement under AC+ and start it again. Love love love the feel of this device.

Does AppleCare Plus actually allow you to swap out the phone just for scratches to the back? I heard that their updated policy states that fair wear and tear over time is excluded.
[doublepost=1483035091][/doublepost]Never mind, just confirmed that AppleCare Plus indeed does cover micro abrasions and scratches gained over time through the Accidental Damage fee.

if I'm ever denied this by the Genius Bar, all I have to do is show them the transcript emailed to me, and under Australian Law they would then have to honour what they said as it lead me to make the decision to purchase AppleCare Plus and use my device in such a way. I'm guessing the same would apply to others too if they ever had an issue.

Worst case, you could always do the unethical move and smash the phone. I imagine that I will smash the phone, accidentally, at some point, which is why I buy the AC+ warranty.

Edit: Good find though, thanks for asking!

Honestly, I wonder if you'll be happy with Jet Black. If you are looking at the back of the phone and noticing these, they will always be there. A wrap will take away the grip and feel of JB.

That's the one feature on the jet black model I envied. I would really like to have some sort of a grippier texture my iPhone 7. As much as I like the different colors, I would really think this would benefit some and prevent slips out of my hand. And I never use a case and my iPhone has never been dropped.
