I'm always amused by this argument for not choosing a device that will be used for video. Excluding the iPad, Surface 3, and now the Nexus 9, most devices have a screen ration of 16:10 (tablets such as the Nexus 7, LG G Pad 8.4, Samsung Tab for a few examples) or 16:9 (nearly all smartphones). Do you realize that the vast majority of movies released now have an aspect ratio of 1.85 or 2.4? To avoid having black bars on the top and bottom of your tablet when playing video, it need to have an aspect ratio equal to or less than the display ratio (1.6 and 1.77, respectively, for the previous mentioned display ratios) or guess what, you'll have black bars. The only way to avoid these bars is to then zoom in, thus cutting off the left and right portions of the video.

Television is admittedly a different story as most of these shows are formatted for the native 16:9 display ratio of current televisions but again, unless your device also has a 16:9 ratio (and as mentioned, the vast majority of tablets don't), you're going to have black bars.

I personally will deal with some black bars if it means I see the entire picture, and get a whole bunch of extra screen real estate for other apps and web browsing.
I do know, still annoys me, wish it was full screen with no cut off. As long as the bars aren't big no big deal then, some tablets seem ok in that regard and others were pretty bad with the space, guess I'd have to see what a landscape vid looks like on it. Still interested in this tablet and could put up with that, but want to see what other users say after the update as far as running hot, xda their saying charging is really slow etc (my Samsungs charge fast as hell). Finally seems like we got a Nexus device that isn't gimped really.

Well 16:10 is still better than 4:3 for watching movies AND TV shows.

Well, I don't personally see how--black bars or slightly wider black bars. ;) The significantly increased real estate for web browsing alone more than makes up for a slightly bigger sized version of something you'll have to look at regardless. You're not losing any resolution in the movie because the added pixels are just added to the sides were the black bars are. And the bezels are already adding 'black bars'.

Of course, YMMV.

What are you guys talking about Touch wiz and Nexus devices?? Only Samsung devices get Touch Wiz. Hello!

Yes I know. What I'm saying is I hope that Nexus devices get split screen - like TouchWiz already has.

Letterboxing videos yes because of the AR BUT this tablet has to be the best I have ever encountered with making that moot. How so? Well with the very first video I watched I did not even notice it. Black levels are outstanding on this device.

Was just a promotion to gain publicity. Probably only had a few .

Anyway...my nexus 9 is comparing favorably to my iPad air thus far.

I have both Airs now to compare to each other. To cut cost because I feel the Nexus 9 is a keeper, I think I will go with the first gen Air since it is $100 cheaper and I got an open box so even more savings.

Something needs to go way wrong with the Nexus 9 over the next two months for me not to keep it.

There is a thread on android central stating BB is allowing $100 trade in on a tablet when you purchase the Nexus 9.

Gotta dig through some of my dinosaurs.

Agreed.

I am leaning towards selling my air. Did a full side by side comparison. The apps use all seem equally good or even better on the nexus 9.

Web browsing and having multiple tabs open was really telling. The nexus 9 took it like a champ, couldn't trip it up. The iPad air refreshed after three tabs and eventually crashed.

PDF reading is still an advantage for the iPad. Just need an app like PDF expert, and there would be no complaints.

I use iAnnotate on the iPad, and while it's not quite as slick as PDF expert, I still think it's pretty good. iAnnotate has a version for Android, though I've never tried it.

Yeah....actually a really poor app. I just tied it out. Hasn't been updated in a year. Unfortunate.

Overall, adobe and xodo have good apps. Not as slick as off expert, but good.

Darn. The two things keeping me from seriously considering an Android tablet are the perfect form factor of the iPad mini which just fits into my suit jacket pocket, and the availability of a good pdf reader. It should be able to scroll vertically, and to crop the horizontal margins.

I'm starting to desire the Nexus 9, but... I find it too expensive, mainly due to the amazing price the Nexus 7 2013 had.

It was such a great deal for the specs I find it hard to justify buying another tablet (and much more pricier), but I'd really like the better build quality and no touchscreen issue hopefully.

It does that fine. It renders PDFs perfectly well. Read a few today, compared it to the iPad...no big difference. Couldn't tell a real difference between the screen sizes either, compared to my air

PDF expert is just an amazing app....but nothing I cant mange with out if I choose
