I think the one thing I like about iMessage is that I can go on my rMBP and type a long message. So hard to get out completely from Apple's eco system. I am definitely not as deep in as I used to be.
On Android, Mighty Text can do this, however it is certainly not as good as iMessage.

Pushbullet, too, but it's not free.

Hangouts do this too. Well I did it once. Don't use hangouts lol. WhatsApp is my main messaging app. If I need to write something long I just send a voice note. However I know that is just convenient for me and probably inconvenient for you.

Hangouts allows you to do the same through Gmail. Definitely agree it's a useful feature.

Can you send SMS this way?

I understand some don't see as much value in iMessage but when the overwhelming majority of my regular contacts are with other Apple users, it's such a vastly better messaging solution to just about everything else. The fact that the Android advocates here are constantly touting the advanced functionality of Android yet simultaneously claiming SMS/MMS is adequate is good for a chuckle. None of the compression of video or photos, no character limits, instant audio messages. Heck, I'll share files like word docs with contacts using iMessage. And the continuity across all devices is great, and includes SMS. And no need to get a contact to sign up for a third party service or download an app. Another great aspect--can easily communicate with my kids that don't have smartphone on their iPads, again without having to use another messaging app.

Hangouts has the potential to be just as great but won't be because Google cannot mandate it as the default messaging solution. When I'm on an Android phone, even though every contact that uses Android has a Google account, all my Hangouts messages to them end up being SMS because none actually use Hangouts.

Of course, if you don't have a lot of interaction with Apple users or use a lot of Apple hardware, you may not see as much benefit. But don't begrudge those of us that truly do see tremendous value in it.

Believe you can only send sms via hangouts if you are using a Google voice number (like from pc or tablet - hangouts is capable of both on the actual phone of course)

Every time I think about moving to Android, I'm always stuck with the tablet issue. I mean, I want a tablet to replace my laptop. The iPad Pro is on one side and the closest competitor when it comes to screen size is the Note 12.2 that is a bit old. The Pixel C is a bit small for me as a laptop replacement, at least when I can buy a 12.9inch iPad.

Windows is close, but I have a couple games I can't get on Windows.

Drag and drop is an amazing feature. I have to sometimes transfer files at work to different places. And it's great that I can just plug in my s6 and have it act as a hard drive.

Very convenient.

It's a feature I likely would not wish to go without. I organize and rename files myself (music, video etc...) that I rather just toss everything over (non media as well)

I liked my iPod and all however when I used The Sansa Clip I found drag and drop easier and less cluttered then requiring a program to do it.

I get confused about the whole thing, now that Google Messenger is a thing. For now, I treat hangouts like FaceTime and stick with messenger.

On the Nexus 5, Hangouts was the only messaging system. I had tons of problems with it.

That's why I love Google Voice so much. Besides having it's own phone number the text messaging is super nice to be able to use, type, check, etc on any device.

Hangouts is much improved.

Wish they would change the name Hangouts to something more ... adult. At least they didn't name it something totally geek-dweeb like Mission Control or Launchpad...

Gmessage? Lol

I believe names really can kill a product or make a product. Not a fan of the name hangouts either.

Agree...the name of the app doesn't clearly explain its functionality, and thus I think most casual users don't bother with it. Google should keep it simple and direct...just call it Google Messages. People will likely go to immediately for their standard text messaging and discover all the added benefits.

To me Hangouts sounds like a chatroom app. Even knowing it did SMS or one-to-one messaging I still didn't care for the fact that its name implied chat room was its main purpose. So I never really used it.

Keep is another app name from Google that I don't care for.

Inconsistent experience everywhere I turn in ios.

Because I haven't unlocked my iPhone in 48 hours I have to use the pincode? Is there a way to turn off this security feature?

So little faith in touch id?

Do android devices with fingerprint scanners do this?

Answer is yes....after 48 hours need pin code. That is inconsistency? Ok...

My Note 5 doesn't don't this. But my iPhone 6s plus does. It's annoying....... I have it set to use my fingerprints and not need the pin.

You have got to be kidding me:
Now I think you are just looking for things to get picky about. What percentage of people would not unlock their phone in more than 2 days? I think, very little. Conversely I can see reasons why this was implemented--and make no mistake it was intentionally implemented.

Now if it is the same on an iPad, I would rather it not do that. But for my phone? I am somewhere between not caring and thinking it is okay.

I'm one of "those" people, but this wouldn't bother me at all I'd rather enter a pin than have the phone forever unlock with a print.

Exactly. Touch ID is touted as the next step in security, and it's fantastic. So why so little faith in it? Because I haven't unlocked it in two days? I understand why it's there, but I also find it unnecessary. Apparently I can turn it off (thank goodness). Wish I could say the same about the App Store's inconsistent Touch ID versus password "security."

Again, the main point is, iOS is such a terribly inconsistent experience. You expect and get used to one way, then it suddenly says you can't do it in the name of security.

I have data, and therefore, I expect to be able to download what I want to download from the App Store. Except, nope, if it's too big, I must wait til I get to WiFi. Inconsistent. Ditto for software updates.

Back navigation. Sometimes upper left, upper right, center "cancel" button, lower left or lower right cancel button. Sometimes I can swipe back. Sometimes I can't. Sometimes even within Apple's own apps, I can swipe back and sometimes I can't. SOmetimes even withint the same app, there is no consistent experience.

The App Store and Touch ID. I set it so to only use Touch ID. So I'm expecting that's how it'll be. Except nope, sometimes at random, it'll require my password.

And now this. Touch ID to unlock device. But if it's been 48 hours, pin instead. I expect Touch ID; I get pin instead.

Inconsistent. But apparently I can turn it off. I just don't know how... EDIT: Nope. This can't be turned off.
