Your thinking this is not a worthy upgrade based on the case alone explains your position very clearly. Although you have said "you hope Apple gets it right" in other places you have expressed the opposite. Capishe? So You are expressing conflicting views.

Dodging questions again?

Please explain how myself or anyone else here discussing the rumored iPhone 7 design is "gross speculation on top of rumor"?

Regarding the "conflicting" views. That, too, needs explaining. I'm commenting on a rumored iPhone 7 design and how I dislike it, but I do hope these rumors are false and that Apple has a better design planned for us. That's the "hope Apple gets it right" thing. Explain to me how that's conflicting.

Your turn. Let's see some answers to the many questions I've posed to you here. You haven't answered a single one.

EDIT: Nothing? A conversation is a two way street. It's clear you aren't here to actually have one. Back to topic then...

This is a rumor reported yesterday about possibly only one model of the 2017 iPhone will be going glass. But now with a neat render.

http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/19/iphone-8-glass-design-only-one-model/
iPhone supplier exec says glass design only coming to one model in 2017, will still have metal frame

iphone-6-concept-nowhereelse-and-martin-hajek-003.jpg

These are the questions I'm wondering about:

If these rumors are true, will the glass model be just for the higher end, larger, and most expensive iPhone? Is the revisiting of glass design for contact-less charging? Can contact-less charging be done with aluminum (I genuinely don't know)?

If this really is the case, it'll mean Apple is once again saving the best features for the higher end model. Not the first time we've heard these sorts of rumors (even now, the Plus model has OIS while the standard doesn't).

While I love glass design smartphones, I'm not thrilled about these rumors of saving the best features only for the highest and most expensive model, which likely also means the largest model. Not all of us like giant phones.

If Apple does this with the dual-camera and the iPhone 7 this year, and then do it again with the glass model and wireless charging next year, it'll be a very frustrating time for iPhone devotees. Especially those who want/like these new features, but don't want a phablet. Is this Apple, once again, trying to push people to spend more on the higher end model?

And does this mean that only the glass model gets the front edge-to-edge OLED display?

Interesting rumors so far... Lots of questions.

PS. That render, by the way, is my favorite so far for a potential future iPhone. Sleek, simple, and much more subtle antennae lines that don't frame the device awkwardly all across the top and bottom of the back. (If you're gonna have antennae lines on a metal phone, I think HTC has done a much better job at it with the HTC 10).

The argument that you worry about what's under the hood and not the physical appearance is incredibly comical to me. They go hand in hand. The nicest looking phone/car that functions like garbage won't succeed, and the opposite is true. The ugliest of phone/car with great internals will have trouble succeeding, because whether you like it or not, people make decisions based off of physical appearance. On EVERYTHING. You need the best combo of both to have success.

Not directed at wildo, just an observation.

I am willing to bet the majority of people have no idea what processor is in a phone, etc. Brand, looks, size and camera is what they go by. So I believe looks is very important to a company.

Try walking down the street and ask people you see what processor they have in their phone. How many do you think would say "I don't know what that means".

Geeks on forums is actually a small percentage of the buying public, don't overestimate the masses.

That is the second rumor of the glass IP7 I have seen floating around so far. Both of these mention it will only be for the higher end IP7 and NOT for the entry level. Then along with glass enclosure....will it bring wireless charging? If it does it will be another feature only for the higher end model.
That render looks great btw..

Great point. As I said earlier, even if design isn't important to one poster here, it doesn't mean others can't discuss it. And it certainly doesn't mean we don't care about innards. What a ridiculous implication.

Clearly, design is also important to Apple for many reasons, including what you've said here.

I love that render. That's an iPhone design I can get behind. But right... I fear if the rumor ends up being true, it'll only be for the higher, more expensive, and larger iPhone. That would be unfortunate, if true. ;(

Still think the modest-update rumored design is pretty bad. Those antennae lines... they frame the device so awkwardly. I mean, look at it from this angle:

iphone-dummy-2_thumb.jpg

This render, in my opinion, is the much better design:

iphone-6-concept-nowhereelse-and-martin-hajek-003.jpg

Too bad that even if this is accurate, it's most likely meant for 2017. That's a long ways away...

A lot of people can't change a flat tire either. However if you ask a different question, why do you like your phone, the first response if not going to be looks, imo, it's going to be function and form. It's going to be a rare bird that buys a phone on looks only.

So rumors are the first picture is for the iPhone 7 and 7 plus...but glass render is maybe for the iPhone 7 pro?

First picture is the rumor for 2016 iPhone. Both the standard and Plus. Same design for the Plus "Pro" if that comes to fruition, but possibly with dual-cameras. There are nicer renders out (I posted them here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-ditching-apple.1937449/page-27#post-22916833). The pic you quoted is a bad pic, but I wanted to show the angle and why the antennae "grin" is so awkward.

The glass render and rumor is for the 2017 iPhone, and apparently only for one model. Presumably the highest end model, which could be some Plus "Pro" version. And then I guess the non-glass models would look similar to the 2016 model? No clue.

Changing a tire is not a valid comparison, knowing what is under the hood would be.

Feel free to think what you want, but i worked as a mechanic in a high volum shop in san diego for 5 years in the us and it was rare when someone knew what engine they had in their car.......something we had to ask on every car. You asked and then checked. Couldn't tell you how many said "the big one" and it was a 4 cylinder or a 6 when an 8 was an option. I would say about 5 percent actually knew.

Phones and computers are the same whether you accept it or not. I have built computers since the 80's, both as a job and sideline, and have flashed, unlocked, rooted some jailbreaking on a lot of phones for money and it would surprise you how many that do that don't even know. Both computers and phones.

Sorry, but you are way off on this.

i do agree it's a rare person who knows the processor except for geeks. But that still doesn't explain how the iPhone 7 could be rejected before the full scope of the phone is known.

Thats not the point though. Most people just know its the newest version and look at it in the store. It could be based on new internals or a rehash of old ones. Only new version, apple, and how it looks/size will matter. Granted there are some that will buy just because it's apple.

Take this story.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/loca...d7e100-7a20-11e3-8963-b4b654bcc9b2_story.html

Half of the smartphone owners do not even download apps. Why would they even know or care about storage or anything else internal? They are the reason apple stays with 16gb storage and anyone that actually uses storage effectively pays 100.00 more (in the us) for a phone.

Working with the public taught me to never underestimate the ignorance of the average consumer. It also taught me that just because they are ignorant of one thing that does not mean they are dumb.

I notice I did not answer your question. Many people will not, i would not. But there Are a lot of people that would. The ones that go to bestbuy and look at the "latest iphone". Granted that is after it is released but I believe epic is predicting this reaction based on the 50% or more technologically handicapped that do not care what is inside.

Iphones are actually too thin for my big ands with Rhumatoid arthritis so I use a case to make it thicker. So externally it's not so important. I realize I am in the minority.

Correct me if I am wrong epic. I also believe looks WILL play a big roll with these folks, size, camera maybe.

We all seem agree the average Joe consumer doesn't know what the insides of a device is at a glance or cares for that matter...
They go appearance and design more than anything else. That is why the first impressions and renders of the iPhone 7 can be dismissed. The exterior case have been leaked already and it looks almost exactly like the existing iPhones.....

That story focuses on one demographic, the "befuddled technocrat". If you dont know processor, you also don't know megapixels, ram storage and the like; but one usually asks the question of how is this better than the old model.

But I guess I can see your point partially.

Perhaps people are rejecting the rumored design, and not the phone itself. There's no need to wait for "the full scope of the phone" before people can draw impressions on rumors. Then it wouldn't be a rumor. You can wait until then to discuss the iPhone 7 if you want to, but that doesn't mean no one else can discuss these rumors. Especailly at a website that primarily discusses rumors!

But even so... even if someone wants to reject the iPhone 7 based on these rumored designs, that's their prerogative. What exactly is there to explain? People are free to make opinions or decisions about rumors as they wish; and people are free to change their minds after new rumors develop or when the official release comes about.

This is why it's a shame you won't answer any of my questions that might help explain your position better. Until then, Toltepeceno is right: you're way off, considering you're the one visiting MacRumors only to criticize people for discussing or having impressions on rumors.
[doublepost=1463776230][/doublepost]

Yep. As I've said, even if design is not important to one poster, it's important to many others, the public, reviewers, and Apple themselves.

But even so, you were on point earlier.

The point is, it's not ridiculous to make comments, have impressions, or draw judgments based on rumors. I mean, that's what we're here to primarily do: discuss rumors. It's in the name of the website even!

And no one is saying that it isn't nice to have a spec bump. It's just that to only move the antenna lines, upgrade the camera and processor won't be enough for most of us and your average consumers.

https://www.macrumors.com/2016/05/20/apple-sony-lg-dual-cameras-iphone-7-plus/

Apple Turns to LG as Sony Falls Behind on Dual-Lens Camera Production for iPhone 7 Plus

If production logistics and availability for the dual-camera module is really a problem, I could see the rumor of the dual-camera being only for the iPhone 7 Plus being true. Unfortunate circumstance, I think.

I predict Apple will position the dual-camera iPhone (whether that's the Plus or the Plus "Pro") as meant for "professionals," thus meriting the high price-point.

At least there's this:

Nomura Securities also believes that Apple will include optical image stabilization (OIS) on both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone, whereas the feature has been exclusive to the larger iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus over the past two generations.

I must say that even the average buyers are beginning to see through Apple's profit taking stance. Rather than commit to innovation and fresh new features, the same recycled iPhone has sent a message about Apple's obsession with its own gain.

Average buyers follow this stuff. My wife follows it as an example. She doesn't look under the hood of her car, know how to change a flat tire, know what processor is in her sp4 or iphone. Yet she knows about slo-mo, 3dt, how to customize the iphone, the options in settings etc. and understands the difference in functionality between various iphone models. Nor is the cost of a new phone a concern or how much any one company rakes in when a consumer buys their products. You can'[t pry her iphone out of her hands to replace it with another manufacturer.

Only here, do some people seem to care about "excess" profits.

So basically, I'm impressed with all the hyperbole you managed to squeeze into two sentences. lol.

There's no such thing as excess profit. What does exist in the world of Apple is excessive use of hype, and the public is noticing. The growing awareness of mainstream buyers and the resulting conversations they're having about Apple is very revealing. In the past they didn't care or notice, now they do. It's just beginning to show, but it's a growing anti-Apple sentiment. Sooner or later Apple will feel the pushback.

Exactly......only us geeks on tech forums care what under the hood. Try talking tech specs to the average consumer and their eyes gloss over...they have no idea what we are talking about. They go by appearance first then performance. Then by performance....... the questions they ask are is it fast? Will the battery last all day? Does the camera take good pictures? What colors do you have?
Apple is going to have a down year profits wise....they have even said so themselves. The iphone 7 and the rumors surrounding it seems more famous for what it is removing (headphone jack port) than what it will bring to the table. Apple is obsessed with making things thinner.......it seems to be form over function imho.....

So you agree then that people don't care about what profits a company makes when buying a phone?
Nor is the cost of a new phone a concern or how much any one company rakes in when a consumer buys their products.

Because you seem to bring up profits all the time in tech discussions. So are you reversing your stance now? Contradict yourself much? Because myself and @epicrayban has called you out on this numerous times.
