I went all gnomey on my desktop because of you 3.18 seems actually OK other than it's it's a big fat RAM hog

I'm of the "We've got 8 and 16GB standard in our computers these days. 300MB ain't bother me none" school of thought. Yeah, it's fatter than most Linux DEs, approaching Windows and OSX levels, but the tradeoff is you get a lot for it. If you want or need a light running desktop, you have tons of options for it, but I think Gnome feels more modern, and is actually really user friendly...once you get used to its weirdness.

If I were to convince someone to use Linux, I'd use Gnome 3 to do it.

I'm at 6.8GB with 12 Chrome tabs, 3 are youtube, one Netflix, Liferea, Corebird, Evolution, Steam, and Gnome Photos. That seems like a bit much but I live in 2006 so..

It's sorta nice and I see where it might influence others but it seems to me that Gnome 3 hasn't gotten lighter like KDE has with 5.

I bet about half of that is Chrome. Damn browsers these days go through memory like its going out of style. Especially with video. Youtube and Netflix tabs tends to take up at least 200MB for themselves from what I've seen.

KDE would actually be my second choice. I like Gnome the best due to the way it acts, and I kinda like the style of it. But if I had to use something else, it'd be Plasma 5. The one thing I like about it is that it's built to be tweaked. Anything and everything can be customized to your own specific tastes.

The only thing that keeps me from bumping it to the top of the list is that, like most Linux DEs, it's very much built upon the WinXP UI mold. That was nice back in the day, but I've come to like the more visually oriented, icon based, consolidated task styles of Win 7/8/10, and OSX. It works better for me.

I'm not going to link this to when Steve Jobs passed but I really do feel like Apple have lost their innovation/quality control over the past few years. If I could get out of the Apple ecosystem (e.g., use something else other than iTunes) then I'd do it but I have iPhone, Apple watch... etc etc LOL

I think the passing of Steve Jobs was not the cause of the "decline" of Apple software. Consider:

2011-2012
  • Android Ice Cream Sandwich and its critical Holo theme brings Android into the modern design worthy of iPhone competitors
  • The Galaxy SII hit and exploded
  • Apple begins breaking from Google services
  • To compete with Google, Apple creates worse competitors of Google Apps
  • Instead of having the freedom to choose which apps default where, iPhone users are pigeonholed into Apple Apps, creating a lesser experience.
Since the break from Google, Apple has settled for creating lesser apps to replace Google offerings and have placed them front and center in iOS.

That's where I'm at unfortunately. I'm so engrained in the ecosystem it would be hard for me to leave. I have an  Watch, MPB and 6S Plus.

The watch is the problem, really. The MBP is easily switched to Chrome to be compatible with Android stuff. My Macbook Pro and Nexus 6P interface well through Chrome and I use Mighty Text for messaging.

I would recommend trying Google Photos, anyway. It's just a lot better than iCloud Photo Library and if you were to consider moving the other way, Google Photos is supported across ecosystems.

Yeah the only problem is there is no Android Wear watch that uses NFC for Android Pay which just seems crazy to me.

And even if there were a viable solutions, that's a ton of change to shell out along with a phone. Although, a 5X and an Android Wear watch would be cheaper than a decent iPhone 6S+

Yeah I'd have to sell my watch and phone. Which is annoying and I'd go 6P which I actually bought one and used for about a week but there was a few things that still bugged me about Android.

I'm really happy with the apple watch and the iPhone. As for everything else, I'm not married to OS X or the Mac platform though for what I get, its hard to pass up the 5k iMac.

I'm looking for a new computer in 2016 and there's a short list so far, but I've yet to cross off MBP and iMacs from that list. I see some high end Dell XPS laptops that look really nice as well, and are priced under the the MBP by 400 - 700 dollars. That's hard to pass up.

There's still a lot I like about OS X, and the integration I see between iOS/OS X, so I'm still leaning towards a Mac

Agree with OP, I'm in the same boat. I'm hitting nothing but problems with everything apple.
All the devices are full of bugs and glitches right now, this talk of wait it will get fixed is not good enough tbh.

Android isn't much better in this department. It's essentially comparable. The difference is Google's far superior services.

Me too, if I have the money, ruled out spending so much on a Mac Pro, so think I'll be split between the iMac and the MacBook Pro. I kinda hope they update the MacBook Pro with a discrete GPU upgrade and Skylake. And 32GB configuration options.
I'm certainly not going to drop OSX that's for sure, I would run it next to windows tough.

Decided that I am going to sell my iPad. I MIGHT sell my Apple watch...I'm not happy with how easily it has damaged and the band has worn away.

I dumped Apple about a month ago and purchased a Xbox One, Nexus 6P, Chromecast 2 and am still deciding what Microsoft Surface to buy.
What pushed me away was the price of the iPhone 6, lack of functionality and price of Apple TV 4, iPad pro running iOS and the keyboard stand lacking adjustable stand.
All of the above Apple devices cost more and lack of features are not enough to keep me anymore.
For me it was all about versatility against apples walled garden functionality.

I can sympathize with all of these (I'll stick with the Mac for a while, though, because Windows is still trash). There are people who are made for the iOS environment. My wife is an example. However, as of late, there have been countless issues with her devices. I spend an hour fixing her contacts, another half hour figuring out her calendar accounts. It's just the same troubleshooting and "wizarding" that Jobs and Forstall hated.

I knew Forstall had to go, and Apple has done some great things in Jobs' absence, but some of the software issues are obnoxious and difficult to debug.

Same here. I despise iOS and iPhones, however I am still hanging onto my Macbook Pro. I like the new Windows 10, however trackpads on most laptops are still lacking compared to Apple's.

Nexus 6P owner here too.

So I'm thinking I'll keep my 2013 rMBP for now. Going to sell my 2015 retina macbook, iPad, apple watch and s6 and get a note 5. I might think about a PC laptop in future. Just need a replacement fitness tracker for my apple watch.
