Gotta be in it to win it
I can sympathize with all of these (I'll stick with the Mac for a while, though, because Windows is still trash). There are people who are made for the iOS environment. My wife is an example. However, as of late, there have been countless issues with her devices. I spend an hour fixing her contacts, another half hour figuring out her calendar accounts. It's just the same troubleshooting and "wizarding" that Jobs and Forstall hated.

...
My wife has my old 5s on IOS 9.1. She is on the device a lot, because it's her work device and primary social media device. Has her ipad 2 on 9.1 and a new SP4 as well. She has no issues and the only time she seems to need help is when I change router settings and disrupt the wifi. When I gave her the iphone, it was:
1. backup old device
2. restore new device
3. hand it over.

Of course the above did take some time, but I didn't have to babysit anything.

Could be happier with "just works", because I'm busy enough and don't want to troubleshoot IOS issues. Everybody's mileage is different across the range of devices.

Do a clean install..... my rMBP 15 shipped with Yosemite but only had it for a week or so before El Cap came out and is running without issues.

Your experience with the SP3 does not reflect mine (i've gone through 3 of them), but then again i've been trying to use them as a proper desktop replacement running simulated networks (GNS3 and multiple VMs in VMware Workstation) and perhaps thats why they keep failing.

Of course it's not. But it's Tim Cook's wet dream hope that it would be a replacement so they can get more people into iOS lockdown.

Actually the reason iOS is the way it is, is for device security. It's a trade-off. 40 years has proven that relying on the end user to do the right thing for security is a failure (and malware is only getting more advanced).

Yes there will always be a market for a more flexible device, but for most end users the iOS model (whether it is iOS or something else) is probably better to protect them from themselves.

I suppose when they envision their end users as needing Siri to know whether it's raining outside they could see it that way. That's why we can't have nice things like USB connectivity and freedom from iTunes.

Please explain further, what you think Apple "stole" from Microsoft as opposed to adding features that have been in other devices, which other manufacturers have added over the years.

The Surface isn't entirely new in and of itself, but it's form factor is somewhat unique, mostly in the sense that the computer itself is located directly behind the screen, a'la the iPad, with the keyboard being a ultra thin canvas-like cover.

There wasn't anything quite like the SP before it came out, and since it's arrival, we're seeing more companies follow its form factor now that it's proven itself something of a success with the SP3. The iPP, while not a direct copy, does lean pretty heavily in its direction.

okay. iPad 1 released in 2010. Original surface released in 2012. Microsoft copies Apple. Ipp released in 2015 Apple copies Microsoft. Is this where we are at?

No, it is the end goal of what Steve Jobs started when he made the iPad. The idea of simplifying the computing experience is what he wanted.

Not a direct copy, no, but it obviously cribs some ideas from it.

That's how technology works. Everyone gets ideas from everyone else and keeps moving forwards.

Right. And their 'lockdown and extract' business model is just pure coincidence.

...adding, it's truly Orwellian to see the iTunes gatekeeper as "simplifying the computing experience." Drag and drop must be for PhD's only.

I've always been of the opinion that using security as the banner flag to restrict purchasing through apple and only apple is rather genius. However I think it is really all about money and security (lockdown) is a convenient goal that plays into the strategy.

This is one of my beefs with iOS. With no file system available to the user it's hard to do things like download PDF fiels for offline use when abroad (and possibly reliant on WiFi). I really hope with the iPad Pro out they'll have to incorporate a file manager etc for iOS 10.

Thats easy. You just upload the files to iCloud and then download them in iBooks or Goodreader and there you go, offline reading. Alternatively you just sync them with iTunes.

To me the main problem is the lack of privacy in iCloud Photo Library. I don't want all of my photos in the Cloud without the posibility if hiding them for real instead of using a special folder that everybody can access. Having said that, to me ICL is a pleasure to use.

That's really not true, either.

The iPad is a tablet with a touch interface.

The Surface is the eventuality of an often attempted tablet platform from Microsoft.

Neither copied either.

I think the model was made partially for lock in and partially because it's easier to maintain. Security isn't an issue, for example. Even Android is more secure when you stick to the store.

I'd say that the iPad definitely played a part in making the Surface what it is today. The simple fact it served as the base example of what a tablet should be, and helped popularize touch interfaces shows that much at least.

Yes, but reacting to the needs of the customer by changing a previously existing product category to sell more devices isn't "copying".
