What sane captain would take a 3000 ton destroyer and charge at a 70,000 ton Japanese battleship, as occurred in real life in the battle of Samar. See USS Johnston, charging at the IJN Yamato to give US escort carriers covering the invasion of the Phillipines a chance to withdraw from the oncoming Japanese battle fleet.

Military history is full of hopeless charges.

Plus...Star Trek is made up, they can have the hero do whatever they want. Narratively, it set up the bargain Sisko made with the Founders.
Battle of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. A hopeless bayonet charge by Union soldiers protecting the flank with almost no ammunition. It turned the tide of the second day of the battle.

I just wanted to know if this first episode was on YouTube or YouTubeTV? I reread the link and it says: available for free on the official Paramount+ YouTube channel. Well before YouTube TV, regular old YouTube had people’s and organizations channels. I guess I’ll have to go look, but what I really want is to watch it on my TV, not my computer.

Update: Found it here:

There used to be a link there, now it says private. So did I miss the free pilot viewing?

1966 Star Trek had to walk a fine line. They were about social issues, but they couldn't be too loud about it. The famous Kirk/Uhura kiss couldn't be just a kiss, it had to look like aliens were forcing them to do it. And many southern towns refused to air thst episode.

Today's ST isn't about agenda, it just can be more agressive in portraying its social issues. If you want to call it "agenda," fine. But its an effort to fight an agenda that is going pn now in many states where you can't even talk about "gay" in schools and transgender bans are popping up everywhere. New ST is just responding to the times in equal force.

Heh.. yet people tend to forget that the first gay/lesbian kiss happened on Star Trek...

.. and the fact that Star Trek was the last show ever on broadcast/network TV to use the N word.

BL.

I'll surely have some miffed but ... Discovery went to great lengths to push down white male leads in favour of inclusion rather than simply having a mix and that was the crew. The irony is just how popular the white male lead was with C.P. and thus this show is with us. I wonder how they will deal with this and if they will chip away at Chris and what made him popular on Discovery.

I enjoy the other ST's, but I am happy SNW brought back anthology style (as did Lower Decks). It opens up story ideas, instead of being locked into one theme for the whole season.
Same, I try to appreciate all the Treks for their unique themes and storytelling, but yes I have to say Strange New Worlds feels much more like 'Star Trek' to me than a lot of recent series. Less of characters having melodramatic mental breakdowns every episode - hell - in Disco even the computer has a mental breakdown!

Addendum rant:
In regards to serialised vs episodic storytelling, Picard season 2 was a swing-and-a-miss for me. Every episode I was praying that we'd get back to Rios chewing cigars on the new Stargazer. Instead we got an entire season on present day Earth that should have been a Past Tense / Futures End 2-parter (although seeing Gaius Baltar was a delight)
Rant over

I have to say, don't discount SNW's melodramatic stuff: Pike's impending future, Number One's Augment past, Dr. M'Benga's daughter locked in the trasnporter, Uhura's not sure of her future, Noonien-Singh's Gorn past. Only Chapel and Ortegas don't seem to be freaked out by some dark, hidden past. But the episodes have been good, so I don't mind.

I liked Picard's season 2 better than the first. Seeing Jeri Ryan again as a 50ish year old Seven was good, and I liked Rios and Dr. Ramirez's chemistry. Plus, John DeLancie is always good for a go. Season 3 wil be it';s last, sio I will be interested to see what they come up with - continue the mystery of that anomaly, or something new.

Finished ENT S2 for the second time. A few really good episodes, and quite a number of average ones. That season really lacked a focus and more character development. At least it sets up for a change with the final episode, gearing up for S3. I seem to recall it taking the series up a notch, albeit with way too much time travel shenanigans of course.

That is true, there is still a lot of 'haunted pasts' happening with SNW, perhaps I've just been ignoring them as I take in a new set of crew and enjoy the hero shots of the ship.

Yeah, Season 3 Picard has got to be Neo Borg driven with whatever Big Bad pops out of the anomaly. Maybe it will be a long sequence of episodes 'getting the band back together' like when Picard went to see Troi and Riker in Season 1. A bunch of these new characters have seemingly bowed out at the end of Season 2, so I wonder if they'll be back for a 3rd act deus ex in the finale.

Also is it me, or did the Will Weaton cameo feel like he was presenting The Ready Room rather than actually you know ... acting?

Rios should be gone. Agnes will be back if they continue with the "Neo Borg" plotline. Everyone else should be back. I never got the impression that the TNG cast was going to be the focus of the story - just extended cameos. But I don't know for sure.

I was OK with Wesley showing up, though she seemed awfully believing of his story with no proof until they beamed up.

AFAIK, Rios and Dr. Jurati are gone for season 3 of Picard. See below. And, they've finished filming season 3.

The others not cming back makes sense, though I am surprised Evan Evagora isn't coming back too. Maybe the TNG crew will be getting more than just cameos. Because now you are down to just Picard, Seven and Rafi.

So today we get a bad take on "Freaky Friday" wrapped in 51 minutes of emotional blablabla....
Orville was all the same only longer.

I'll rather rewatch Discovery:oops:

And yep, the highly acclaimed TNG had plenty episodes just like these, hence I never understood the hostility about the storytelling in ENT or DSC......

I thought it was a fun episode. TOS had several goofy off the wall episodes too. I liked Number One and La'an running around the ship playing Enterprise Bingo.

Enterprise deserved a 5th season after that strong 4th.
