Sony's current A7III is still very difficult to get, back-ordered in many places, so I am not so sure that they will rush out with the A7IIIs .....
Agreed, as long as they keep selling the A7III they won’t cannibalize sales. I also don’t they they are concerned with the Z line as Sony still has a greater focus system. Did Nikon price these new cameras too high.

No, I think they're very competitively priced. This is a first release for this generation, and Nikon's offerings are only going to get better. IMO, they did their job to keep people already invested in Nikon lenses from jumping to another brand. The financial loss in switching systems to Sony is not worth it now.
I only lament the adapter not having a screw drive.

It will be interesting to see hands-on detailed comparisons between Nikon Z7 vs Sony A7RIII and Nikon Z6 and Sony A7III. Did not look like Nikon currently has a mirrorless body to compete against Sony A9.

One thing for sure.....very tough for Canon to make a splash unless they deliver a killer body or two.

Think you're right there....

Nikon have done enough to stop most existing owners going to Sony (but why only 1 card slot though).

Canon need to really knock it out the park to get any good press. Most reviews will start with "Canon finally released their mirrorless today...."

Tough market in the mirrorless world at the moment...which can only be good for us.

Let's hope they start a price war!!

How do you know that the autofocus of Sony's mirrorless cameras is better than that of the Z6 or Z7? All I have seen up to now are “first impression” videos and articles with pre-production hardware. But even those don't mention lackluster AF performance, quite the contrary. IMHO the competition here is not Sony's mirrorless cameras but Nikon's and Canon's top-of-the-range dslrs.
How soon does Sony counter with the A7Siii.
In 2-3 years. It takes several years to design a product like a high-end dslr, so you won't see a “counter” to Nikon's Z6 and Z7. It's kinda funny when suggest that e. g. Apple is copying Samsung's smaller bezel in their latest smartphone, just because Samsung has released theirs 2 months earlier. As if Apple saw that and then started with its industrial design from scratch.

High end cameras are the same. Besides, Sony is still backlogged, and releasing a new camera is probably the last thing they want to do now. They already have the best problem a manufacturer can want: they have problem making enough of their product because demand is so high.

A thoughtfully presented comparison between the new Nikon FF mirrorless cameras and lenses and the current lineup of Sony FF mirrorless cameras and lenses, which could be helpful for anyone who is still on the fence about which direction to go:

https://enthusiastphotoblog.com/2018/08/23/nikon-z-vs-sony-alpha/

Reality is, though, until we are able to see a lot of reports from reviewers and users who actually have the new Nikon cameras and lenses in hand and who are using them under a variety of lighting conditions and in various situations alongside Sony's offerings, it really is difficult at this point to make any sort of accurate comparison. Those who already are using Sony cameras and lenses can definitively talk about them but at this point in time the new Nikons are still really pretty much of a mystery until people are actually out there shooting with them.....

Thanks for the link, that is quite a comprehensive summary. I think you are dead on. The only thing I would add is that Nikon has set expectations itself and they are very high — in terms of price and in-house competition, the D850 and D5.

I don't know. Perhaps I'm becoming a curmudgeon, but I just can't get force myself to get excited about camera releases any longer. I have everything I will ever need in my current rangefinder and DSLR systems, and adding a system will not improve my photography. I don't need more dynamic range or resolution. I can't give up my DSLR until a mirrorless system provides either their own line of tilt/shift lenses that rival Canon's or a method of adapting them that isn't clunky and provides equal performance. I won't give up my rangefinder...ever, not only because of lens size but because the responsiveness hasn't yet been equaled.

Agree. It's interesting to watch, but it won't give me any better shots. Just a lighter bank balance. And I can't switch my lenses for at least 3-5 years before z mount equivalent exist. If I need an adaptor doesn't that extra weight cancel out the smaller body?

I was really surprised the other day when I realized I’d been using the same camera (D800) for six years!! And it still works perfectly. As much as I’d love an 850 I don’t need one as a hobbyist. And I also have a D700 I use regularly as well and it is 8-9 years old.

Something I read about the new z6 and z7 ---
...although the LCD panel has touch controls, you CAN'T use touch to "focus and activate the shutter" from the display.

This works beautifully on my Canon 77d (and on other recent Canons).

Why did they leave that out?
After growing used to it, I wouldn't buy another camera without it.

Nikon have strange things like that.
So the LCD screen on the D5300 flips round, but on the D750 just up and down.

Why would the better camera not get the fully articulated screen? Not that I want to record myself of course! I'm not into selfies.

Same here, I got my D7000 for my 30th birthday 7 years ago, and it is still going strong. So far I have no desire to upgrade until it breaks.

Rumors are starting to percolate that Canon will be announcing their mirrorless product by the end of September.

From what I've seen and read so far I am less and less interested in the new Nikon mirrorless Z series and when the time comes, probably will be going with Sony's A7III and a couple of lenses.... Sony has the advantage for me in that their system is already well-developed, has been through the early days stage already, and there is a nice selection of native and third-party lenses already available. I'm familiar with Sony (and its messy menu) already, having owned and used the NEX-7, the RX100 (several of them, now the RX100 M6), the RX10 M IV and a small P&S.

I guess vloggers like that feature, but do know what you mean.
I could start a vlog.

Me on the way to work.
Me at work.
Me on the way back to work.
Me eating my dinner.
My browsing MR's and doing some more work.

Think it will catch on?

It would still be more interesting than those unboxing videos!

What I can't figure out is why some people on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogs, Vlogs, etc) seem to think that everyone is interested in every little thing they do and every morsel of food they prepare and/or eat! The whole Selfies thing is another mystery to me. Ugh!!!!
People want to be as narcissistic as the Kardasian's.
