I cracked up when I saw him pull that iPad (or prototype) out of his suit jacket -- LOL!!!!! Loved it, loved it!!! Topical, trendy....and a boatload of great free advertising for Apple!!!

The first thing I thought was "how big is his inside jacket pocket?!"

Who cares? Seriously guys. Enough with the iPad. Dig up some MacBook Pro update rumours already!

I don't think a MacBook Pro would fit in his pocket!

I love Stephen Colbert! He is hilarious, and his show The Colbert Report (both Colbert and Report with a silent r) is the best late night show I have ever seen. He should be the host of the Tonight Show! If you have never seen it, watch it, as it is very funny and you will get hooked!

And for all you Aussies out there, they show the Colbert Report weeknights on ABC 2 at 7:30 PM (and they always show the latest episode too, it's terrific that we actually get something at the same time as the Americans, cue brain exploding)!

Hmmmm. Will the iPad cause a redesign of the inside jacket pocket???

Actually, after seeing the video this morning it gave me an idea and a bit of testing with my wife's Mini 9 ensued. That thing is about the same size as an iPad (a cm shorter and narrower) but double the thickness and getting on for twice as heavy but it'll fit without any problems into a normal map pocket. The problem is it's a bit too heavy and pulls the jacket down but I don't think it'd be a problem with the lighter iPad. There'd even be enough space to accomodate an iPad in a case. So that'd mean I'd have a computer I could take with me without needing an extra bag... interesting. Well, okay, interesting for 9am on a Monday morning at least.

Did y'all hear the audience's tone? You could hear the oohs and aahs mixed in with the laughter and applause. Pop culture's trend setters just wet themselves a little bit when Colbert whipped it out.

What other tech company can do that?

although I gotta say, I couldn't watch the damn thing on my iPhone.

YouTube has an HTML5 beta.

I think America late night shows are crap. American humour sucks over all.

That was advertising? He was mocking it.

He does this kind of half-kidding product placement on his shows. (I think his presidential campaign, for instance, was sponsored by Doritos.) A lot of people feel sort of "immune" to first-order advertising (usual ads that just try to sell you a product without being self-referential), so some companies go with second-order advertising, where the advertising references or even mocks itself. (An example would be the Get A Mac ad that ends with "Cut to commercial!" "We are a commercial." "...Cut to another commercial." And the aforementioned Doritos-sponsored presidential campaign — the idea is over-the-top enough that you doubt it could be serious, but they're certainly not giving them that publicity for free.) Then the viewers, who see themselves as too smart to be influenced by advertising, see such self-deprecating marketing and feel like they're 'in on the joke' instead of passive targets of marketers, while not noticing that they're being influenced to buy the product as much as anyone else is.

Please,

What ever some of you are drinking, smoking, chasing, injecting, snorting, (rubbing?) will you please stop already...

the over analysis, the hating, ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Colbert, funny, end of

iPad, its here (nearly) buy it, dont buy it, but please, argh, whatever....

I think that about hit the nail on the head. Reminds of of the Frisky Dingo episode that plugged the hell out of Scion on a Regis Show parody.

Ironically, wouldn't a list of nominees be much more suited carrying around on an iPhone/iPod Touch anyways?

I'm european, so I don't really know this guy, but it's clearly an advertising, and not smart at all.

Am I the only one who think this sucked?

Colbert is quite unknown in france and in Italy, probably your are from UK, I guess. And, yes, it is clearly advertising. Just for the fact that he HAS an Ipad should make you wonder how did he get one.

I comment because I can. You know, it's a forum.

+1, also European here, know Colbert and his humour well, and this was a great little plug. Very fitting. (it's only "clearly advertising" from a logistics perspective..)

Different strokes for different folks, but this definitely was not a bad move on Apple's part. It's cute, a bit eccentric, the sort of thing Apple used to be great for. I'm glad they still have a sense of humour.

Where in Australia are you KMM? I'm in Sydney. Moved here from Canada and been a fan of Colbert since before he got his own show.

I just want news on MacBook Pros... Just sold my old one and I miss having one :~~~~( ... How long must I wait??? I'm having to borrow my girlfriend's MacBook Pro 13" to get my fix... Got rid of the 15" I had to get a 17".

I'm from Canberra (people think that Sydney is the capital but no it's Canberra political capital of the World :p)!

I'm lusting for new MacBook Pros too..... C'mon Apple, release them soon and I hope they don't inflate the Apple Australia tax (if you don't know Apple basically inflate their products by quite a wide margin here)!
