Since the macOS reinstall didn't work, they're going to send me a replacement Thunderbolt cable to see if that works.

If not, I have to bring it in for service.

At least you got them to send a replacement cable. Im in a loop of an tech reaching out to their engineers for solutions. Im trying to think if I have any tb4 cables around now...

I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been publicized more than it has - probably because there are not that many people that actually have the ASD?

That's one reason. Another is that some have the Mac Studio and the Studio Display together and use the ports of the Mac only.

I have a Wacom tablet and a key board attached to the Display USB and switch the Display between a Mac Studio and a MacBookPro.

I am pretty sure that we see a software update for the Display soon.

I got my new cable. Unfortunately no change. USB ports still freezing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already done a power cycle for this issue and it didn't help. Also I never knew there was an issue with the speakers since I use external speakers on my system. Another weird problem with the ASD.

So Im trying (again) to diagnose this issue again. I started from a new login and did what I normally do when It freezes (watch youtube vids) via chrome. Over an hour no issues. So I try plugging back peripherals one at a time. No issues. My chrome is still on the default setting playing the vids no problem. When I try to login to chrome via my google name, it reinstalls all my extensions... 15 min freeze. Not sure this is the reason yet. just a theory. Im going to try and uninstall and reinstall the extensions to see if its the case.

Update: Its still freezing with no extensions active but it can last up to 12+ hrs between freezes. Also when its in its "frozen" state. the ASD speakers are causing issues playing any media with sound. Probably due to the fact thats its on the same USB bus. Switching it to my external speakers the playback starts immediately.

I have opened a case at Apple, just to make them aware.

2nd level support first ask to reinstall OSX. Don't do this effort, it's a standard procedure with no value. Lie and tell them you reinstalled the OSX. Next the will send a new cable (you get it for free :). It's on its way...

My guess: This is a software problem of the USB driver. After a while it will simply run into a deadlock. That's it. I am pretty sure that the Display will get an update soon.

Got the same issue, my mouse which is connected to the monitor directly stops working and the last bit of audio that played through the monitor goes on a loop. I had to unplug the monitor from my MacBook Pro M1 and plug it back in (without having to disconnect the monitor from power).

If you are experiencing this issue make sure you open a case with Apple. I believe the more users that make them aware theres a better chance they will put some effort into fixing it.

Maybe the newly released macOS 12.5 update will fix our issue.

Sadly it doesn't look like a display firmware update is coming with this batch of updates.

Yeah, Apple support is turning into Dell. Just reinstall the OS!

I've seen this issue once with my Display and unplugging it for a half an hour resolved it. I hope this doesn't become a frequent thing I have to do and hopefully there's a fix coming.

Ill try the USB on the ASD after this update to see if it was addressed...

Just got the display today after 3 months wait and having this exact issue. Have tried all the software update but nothing fixes it. Perhaps it is better to return the display than getting replacement?

If it bothers you enough, I would definitely return it. For myself, I opted to keep it, but have trained myself not to use the USB ports on the ASD and instead, rely on a separate USB hub that I connect directly to my MBP.

You gotta think, that by now, that there are tons of Apple staff themselves that are using the ASD and running into this same issue, right?!

I just hope this is firmware/software resolvable and not a defect in the hardware.

We should all contact support more often and push for a solution to the problem. It really can't be that nothing has happened yet, the Studio Display has been on the market for a while now. For me, the error now occurs 1-2 times a day and it is super annoying.

Well, that's disconcerting. I just got my new Studio Display yesterday and randomly came across this thread when looking for info on how fast the USB hub in it is.

I used it for about eight hours yesterday and didn't have any problems. Is there anyone here who has NOT had this issue? I'm wondering if I'm lucky to not have hit it yet, or if it's only hitting people using certain USB peripherals.

Myself I'm using a USB-C TOSlink adapter for audio to a receiver, and a USB-C to USB-A adapter to a USB 2.0 hub that I have my keyboard (IBM Model M, hah), mouse and some glowy lights plugged into. Nothing fancy. I do plan to get a USB 3.0 network adapter and do want to plug that into the display, though, so I'll be testing that soon enough.

I even pushed about 800GB through the display's hub doing a time machine backup.
