Most likely will need a firmware update to the monitor, not the computer. The monitor is basically a huge iPhone without a touch-screen, running iOS.

Studio Display USB ports/audio freezing?

It could go either way. If the bug is tickled by certain traffic on the USB bus, a software update to MacOS can work around it by avoiding such traffic.
I tested in one Apple Store and one third party store where they let me have time to test properly.
The USB hub in the monitor is the problem. If you use all the ports then the hub and sound will fail at random moments and need a reboot.
This is shameful because I really want and need a new monitor and now I have to wait or forced to buy another brand.

That‘s really annoying that they made the monitor so complicated when macOS could have handled Center Stage and whatever else iOS is supposed to be doing.
This reminds me of when BridgeOS was crashing MacBook Pros in 2018-2019.
It’s the first time I have ever seen a monitor that is completely dependent on an internal OS that ships with bugs and could become buggier in the future. All other monitors I don’t have to worry about upgrading firmware. I can stay on the same shipped firmware from day 1.
In my opinion, and I know other opinions might differ, the rot set in when monitors stopped being just dumb devices for displaying a visual image received from the computer's graphics card, and instead became mini computers running firmware.
Ooooh very interesting........ maybe this is actually some strange issue that requires the combination of a laptop model + ASD (I'm also on a M1 Max 16", and also experiencing this issue).
On my M1 Max 16" it always seemed to do it when I was in a Google Meet meeting, which is the worst time for it to happen. I've since switched to my M1 Mini for work and the last 5 days it hasn't happened once. I wonder if it has something to do with using devices that use the power delivery piece of the thunderbolt hub.

I didn't initially notice this because I was using the macbook Pro 14 M1 Pro with the lid open. But since I use it closed, the USB HUB of the ASD freezes a few times. I could not even understand what triggers this state.
It rarely happens to me, like 1-2 time every 2-3 days. I keep the macbook pro always on, I put it in sleep mode when not in use but always connected to the ASD.
So from the comments it seems to happen a little random.
Do you think it could depend on the internal temperatures of the ASD? it may therefore be the reason why it happens differently to each of us.

I am afraid that the problem we are having with the USB ports of the ASD is not due to the ASD itself.
Today I was using my LG UltraFine 4k display (the 24 "one with 2 thunderbolt ports) with the ASD in daisy chain. For those who don't know I connect a thunderbolt cable from the macbook pro to the LG Ultrafine and another thunderbolt cable from the LG to the ASD.
I hadn't connected anything to the ASD, while to the LG Ultrafine 4k I had connected the Logitech USB receiver and an Ethernet adapter.
Unbelievable but the USB ports of the LG Ultrafine froze as happens with the ASD.
Based on that, it may be that the problem is the macbook pro with M1 Pro connected to displays thunderbolt devices with USB ports. If it was a problem with the ASD I can't understand how it affected the functioning of my LG.

If I am reading this correctly.. You still had the ASD connected correct? If that is so then its still the ASD. Have you tried the LG by itself?
Yes, I still have the ASD connected. It may be as you say that it is the ASD but I do not explain how it affects the operation of the USB ports of the LG.
Theoretically, the macbook is connected directly to the LG and then the LG which daisy chains the ASD.
I will try in the next few days with only the LG connected without the ASD.
However, as mentioned before, this problem happens to me only with the macbook pro with the lid closed. To you too? Or is there any case even with the lid open?

I believe they are one in the same... I don't get audio freezing because I use external speakers, but when It does freezes I can no longer switch to the monitor speakers, access the display icon in the control panel nor can I access the built in camera... all are connected to USB bus...It would be amazing if the USB-C ports worked properly after Apple releases the firmware for the audio issue.

I think you’re absolutely right. The odds of it being 2 separate issues is unlikely.
Hopefully the new firmware will be out sooner than later.

Im trying it now with my usb receiver and iphone connected to ASD now... been a few hours and ok...

@embotix - Perhaps one of the devices you have connected to the Studio Display is misbehaving and causing your particular failure. Have you tried connecting things one at a time to see if the issue goes away? What do you have connected?
I believe he has a similar issue as I do. The device works when plugged into the studio/mbp but when its plugged into the ASD it fails.
