Was so excited to test this - but it failed to resolve the issue. About an hour in, USB ports died, even took the audio out and froze the screen.

I got one.

Can you show me how you trigger the bug? I was able to do it in a test in a store a week ago but I want to narrow down if there is a singular trigger.

As far as I can tell (and I could be wrong), it seems like it's triggered by a Logitech or Wacom device in addition to something else like an external hard drive being connected to the display at the same time.

Yikes! This issue may be with us longer than we thought. I wish it were more wide-spread so more people would report it.

After a couple of hours, ASD will freeze losing all sound, and USB inputs. The only way I can fix this is to unplug/replug the ASD thunderbolt cable going to my Mac(M1 Max 16inch MBP). I am on the latest ASD firmware just released for the "sound issues".

Interesting for me is that I didn't have this issue until I updated to the newer Logi Bolt USB receiver(using an MX Master 3S mouse). Previously used an MX Master 3 with the older Logitech USB receiver and didn't experience any issues. Is anyone in a similar situation?

I had a similar issue with the 2 receivers.

I'm curious the try running the MX Master 3S mouse Bluetooth only to see if that works. Have you tried this by chance?

curiously I started having this problem too when I switched to the Logitech Bolt receiver. But I can't say 100% that's the cause because when I switched to the Bolt receiver I also started using the macbook pro with the lid closed. With the lid open it seems to work to me, but I don't know if it's just a coincidence.
Do you use it with the lid closed or open?

The mechanical keyboard connected to my Studio Display freezes 2-3 times a week. The key illumination stays on, indicating that the usb port is still delivering power.
Shortly unplugging the thunderbolt cable between Mac and display will restore the keyboard's data transfer.

The freezes occur randomly, sometimes halfway through typing a sentence. Very annoying!

I use the Mac Studio so its not a MBP problem, but there might be something with the power delivery.

I use the MX mechanical keyboard too, but remember the KB is wireless so its not powered by the receiver but, I did have other peripherals on USB hub when it froze and it still was receiving power but the data was frozen.

I use a corded mechanical keyboard, directly plugged into the display’s usb. Everything else is connected via bluetooth.

To exclude more suspects: I don’t use the speakers in the Studio Display, don’t have a Wacom and never use Chrome.

The latest patch did not solve the USB problem. A few minutes ago the keyboard (USB dongle) and the Wacom tablet froze again :-(

Ive had 2 portable drives on the USB ASD hub for about 7 days now and no issues. Im thinking its more of a input type peripheral (keyboards, mice and tablets) issue now.

I passed now 2nd and 3rd level support and there is no need to re-install OSX anymore ;-) We did a remote screen sharing session and Apple send me a support tool capturing all the logs and system messages. During the call and after 30min re-boot the freeze happens again. That was perfect and means we have the logs. I have uploaded a 500MB ZIP file and they will call me back on next Sunday.

I think a few of us have been down this road already and yet here we are. The engineers still havent found the issue.

Please let us know what they say once you hear back.

I agree with teezee1002 that it seems to happen more with input devices like mice and Wacom tablets. Hard drives seem OK for the most part.

I'm in the same boat. At least I know this isn't worth trying to get a replacement ASD. I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been publicized more than it has - probably because there are not that many people that actually have the ASD? Ah well. I was thinking of completely reinstalling macOS (2021 16" M1 Max) from scratch to see if that would make a difference - but I don't think I'll do that now.
I’m a little late, but have reinstalled macOS on my 14” M1 and that didn’t help in my case. However, I can say that I don’t have this issue with my M2 MBA. So guessing it is host/computer related and not the display itself.

If it bothers you enough, I would definitely return it. For myself, I opted to keep it, but have trained myself not to use the USB ports on the ASD and instead, rely on a separate USB hub that I connect directly to my MBP.

You gotta think, that by now, that there are tons of Apple staff themselves that are using the ASD and running into this same issue, right?!

I just hope this is firmware/software resolvable and not a defect in the hardware.
I’ve noticed this on my M1 MBP, but have yet to have it happen on my M2 MBA is an observation.

That's very interesting, actually. I wonder if it has to do with the new Apple TB controller vs Intel version, then.

I was going to quote and reference the exact same article for the same reason!

On one hand, maybe this means this is a hardware-level issue that might never be resolved through firmware/OS updates.

On the other hand, I guess this gives me all the justification I needed to splurge on an M2 laptop...

I honestly don't think it's a hardware problem.
I've been using the ASD for weeks even with an HP Windows laptop for job, and so far I've never had any problems with USB ports. The problem is only connecting it to the Mac. Maybe it's due to the fact that Windows can handle Intel controllers better, I don't know. However, I believe it can be fixed via a mac os update.

A new Wacom driver was just released. Will test over the weekend to see if it makes any difference with the USB ports locking up.
