I passed now 2nd and 3rd level support and there is no need to re-install OSX anymore ;-) We did a remote screen sharing session and Apple send me a support tool capturing all the logs and system messages. During the call and after 30min re-boot the freeze happens again. That was perfect and means we have the logs. I have uploaded a 500MB ZIP file and they will call me back on next Sunday.
I've been through all of this and called back after not hearing anything new for a few weeks and was told that my case was closed. No communication from Apple of any potential resolution or anything. I'd advise you to keep calling in so that they don't close your case.

Hi everyone, I decided to make an account on here just for this thread.

I've been dealing with problems like this all my life so I always dealt with it somehow and thought it's normal haha. But as I get older, it gets more frustrating and I acknowledge that it's not supposed to be normal, especially with brand new devices...

I got the same issue since I have this display. Going through all the comments, it seems to me like it's only a MBP M1 Pro/Max issue in combination with the studio display? I got an MBP M1 Max, I've been having this issue too maybe once a day. Especially while playing games or watching youtube videos.

I honestly feel like it might also be connected to the fact that it's a laptop, with another screen, which you can use as main display, mirrored display etc.
To me it feels like this issue is triggered by some resolution problem and freezes up the ports. When playing games, I started using windowed mode instead of fullscreen and the issue occurs much less frequent. Also in fullscreen mode the particular game would not let me get out of it if it freezes, which had me forced to hard restart the MBP every time.

I always keep my BPM closed, with the studio display as main and only screen. Whenever the issue appears, it's quite interesting if you open up the MBP. Usually whatever content crashed seems to be fine again on the MBP, but in a wrong resolution, probably the studio displays resolution. As soon as I disconnect the tb cable, it goes back to normal. After a few seconds I can connect the studio display again and keep going until the next freeze.

I often use my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Interface, to have audio go through external monitors.
So far I've used different Logitech mice (I wasn't happy with some of them, returned them etc. so it's been a bit chaotic) However now I'm using a G604 which can connect via usb receiver or by Bluetooth.
Not sure if the display issue persists if I have literally nothing plugged in and go through Bluetooth.

It's hard to really analyse why and when the issue happens because I focus on work most of the time (or playing games haha) and literally don't pay attention until it happens. Then I just try to fix it so I can go back to whatever I was doing. But now I see many people have this issue so I'll try to keep a closer eye on it.

Really hoping for an update or that it's fixed with Ventura...

Sorry for the long post and my bad english 😇

It is actually happening for the ProDisplay XDR. Have been dealing with it since I purchased mine earlier this year. Whenever I ask Apple if it is a known issue, or if there are multiple cases regarding this, their response is always that it is something unheard of and it's an isolated case. Wish there was a way to supply them with all of the case numbers that everyone here has opened so that they can see that this is not the case (to my knowledge, case numbers don't reveal any private/sensitive data to other consumers).

As far as Ventura, I am running the beta on my MBP M1 Max and still having the issue. However, no issue on my M2 MBA that is running Monterey.

Seeing the exact same issue here.

I used to have an Intel MacBook Pro and used that with the Studio Display - No issues.

A few weeks ago I got a M1 Max MacBook Pro from work and since that day I've only been having problems with my Studio Display. Almost every time I am in a Google Meet call at some point the audio will freeze (looping endlessly) and if I am speaking people listening to me on the call will also here looping audio. If I disconnect the monitor and plug it back in things go back to normal.

Sometimes the issue also happens when I am not on a call, there I only notice it because my Wacom tablet suddenly stops working. The Studio Display itself keeps working and I can use it via the trackpad on my MacBook Pro, but the Wacom tablet will only work if I restart the Studio Display or if I unplug and plug the Display back into my MacBook Pro.

Has anybody had any success with this issue with Apple or other solutions?

Wanted to chime in that I'm having the same issue. Studio Display. Macbook Pro M1 Max 16". Occasionally all attached USB devices get disconnected, and the Studio Display audio hangs up as well. Initiated a text chat with Apple support but that went nowhere. I do have a USB hub to connect some USB-A devices (mouse, keyboard) and ethernet.

I'm currently running on wifi and bluetooth mouse + keyboard, no USB devices plugged in, just trying to see if the Studio Display audio system will still bug out and fail.

Another strange aspect of this I noticed is that the cursor seems to go low framerate within just a few minutes when connected over USB. The full on USB device disconnect is more of a once/day phenomenon.

I took a high framerate video of the cursor after it's been attached over USB hub through studio display for a few minutes (left) versus right after unplug and replug studio display into macbook (right). Not getting this issue when connected over bluetooth. Haven't tested directly plugged into macbook either. I should test that, and I suspect it would not have the issue, but idk.

edit: Never bothered to reboot the display, so trying that. It's not something that's obviously exposed to the user since you have to unplug/replug to accomplish that.

edit2: display reboot seems to have solved the serious cursor issue that was making the thing essentially completely unusable. I don't know if it will occur intermittently going forward but at least it's not happening within just a few minutes anymore. I'm going to have the macbook run overnight while streaming video to see if it locks up with the audio bug again.

I'm having the exact same thing, on a MacBook Pro M1 Max. Mostly when playing games. But sometimes as others have stated, during a Zoom call they would hear looping audio and my peripheral freezes (usb connected mouse) until I unplug and plug back the TB cable into the MBP. I haven't unplugged the monitor from the wall yet. I noticed the issue is much more frequent since the latest firmware update 12.5

I thought unplugging from power fixed things but all the problems I was having are still happening intermittently. I'm going to try Ventura beta for kicks and see if that helps.

edit: Little update. Installed Ventura Beta and I haven't immediately run into issues, which is good. Seems to be working fine, but I also did a clean install and I've been slow to reinstall applications trying to figure out if there's some problem app. I also haven't had enough time to be super confident about stability but it seems okay for the moment.

This happened with my M1 Mac mini in addition to my 14" M1-Pro Macbook.

I've tested various configurations over the past few months between a USB-C HDD, USB-C 'A' hub with built in Ethernet, and my Logitech lightspeed receiver for my G502.

When the Logitech receiver is plugged in, the ports on the back of the Studio Display go down after anywhere from 1-48 hours. I've gone several weeks now with the Logi rx plugged into the MacBook without issue.

Btw, I spent over an hour on the phone with someone at Apple and she really didn't understand the problem as I was describing it to her. She opened a ticket with engineering and said someone would contact me and nobody ever did. This was over 2 months ago.

Wacom just released a new driver so I'm hoping to test it over the weekend to see if there's any improvement with the disconnects.

***update*** issue still exists with the new driver

Glad to see that I am not the only one having this problem.

Have a Mac Studio Max with the Studio Display. Have a USB C keyboard and a Logitech Mouse with USB C to A adapter. They will randomly lock up and I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac and plug it back in again to get the devices working.

Can't make a connection to the things I am doing when they lock up. Seems to be random. Happens maybe once every other day, sometimes it'll be twice a day.

Nothing severe, but it is quite annoying.

Same here. MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) Max. It freezes after the screensaver or sleep. Simply open the lid, remove the TB cable, and re-plug it. After it works. pretty annoying. I first noticed it on venture beta, and I thought it was caused by it. so I switched back to Monterey 12.6 (by clean install). same deal... (funny thing is the screen displays the screensaver, but the USB ports do not work)

Hope it's a firmware issue. But before you can solve a problem, you must agree you have a problem... i guess.

Felt like it was getting worse for me. It began to freeze a few times a day, even in the middle of using it.

I removed the USB dongle for my Logitech mouse that was using a USB-C to A adapter and put it directly into the Mac Studio. Leaving my USB C keyboard connected to the monitor and so far no lockups. Probably need a few more days to be sure, but perhaps it was the adapter causing the issue.

Also here happens with mac pro m1 + studio display.
Today it happened like more than 10 times. I just got the logitech mx 3s today and it aggravated the broken ports.
I also have a wacom tablet to draw. Support useless and keep saying to re-install the OS but doesnt fix it.

I can tell you that the public beta did not. So fingers crossed for the release version...

I am on Ventura and the same issue continues. Ports randomly freeze. I can not even charge an accessory reliable on these ports.

To recap my previous post, I have a USB-C Keyboard and a Logitech Mouse with a USB-C to A adapter. Was getting freezes at least once a day.

Since then, I tried having just the keyboard plugged in. Didn't have any freezes. Decided to ditch the no-name USB adapter and got an Anker USB-C to A adapter and for the past 4 days I haven't had a single freeze. I've also updated to Ventura during this time, so no idea if that has anything to do with it.

So far so good. Of course I'm jinxing myself for posting this.

Just to know, I have the same issues with Dell UP2720Q monitor (also Thunderbolt) and MacBook Pro (M1 Pro). Weird is that I had zero issues with the same monitor and Intel MacBook Pro (16") so maybe it isn't a monitor bug. I solved the problem by connecting Wacom directly to the notebook with a USB-C to miniUSB cable.

Came here to report the same thing...

I have a 14" M1 Max MBP - currently on Monterey 12.5 although I am about to update to Ventura to see if the same problems occur.

Up until now I've been using an LG 27UD88 (4K) monitor via thunderbolt/USB-C, with my keyboard and mouse plugged into the monitor's USB ports. No problems there at all - devices stay connected. I have an Apple wired keyboard and a Logitech G502 wired mouse.

Yesterday I got a Studio Display and my keyboard and mouse regularly 'die' – at least 10 times in the time I've been using it – particularly when trying to wake from sleep (I'm forced to open my laptop which I usually have in clamshell, and press a key to wake it instead).

It even seems like power isn't being delivered to them at all as the light on my mouse is off. I have to reboot or reconnect the display to fix it. The behaviour when it fixes itself is that it intermittently works for a few seconds (every couple of key presses seem to make it through, but not all) and then it's back up and working. Which does feel to me like some kind of buffer problem, like the firmware is being overloaded or conflicted in some way.

Weirdly it doesn't seem to fix it if I then plug the same keyboard and mouse directly into the laptop, while the Studio Display is also connected. It's as if the display is somehow causing a blockage with the USB ports on the software side, not just its own ports.

Seems from this thread this problem has been around for a while… very interested to know if anyone has a fix!

I'm experiencing this issue as well. My audio interface connected through the studio display just sporadically stops working. I'm on Monterey 12.6.1 with the display on the latest firmware.

Reporting in with the same issue on my MBP 16" M1 Pro, Monterey 12.16.1. Connecting either my mouse, keyboard, or combination of both will eventually trigger freezing of display. At that point no input is registered, True Tone stops working etc. The only way to resolve it is by reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

Any news on Ventura resolving it?

It sounds like this might be a problem with M1 Pro / Max MBPs. I read some other reports with different monitors.
