Your correct CrackedButter.

Turning on a computer involves a massive amount of electricty that does limit the lifespan of a system.

--------

A classic one is "It's a Mac", usually said by someone who hates Mac's and likes IBM-compatible PC's.

Its not the electricity that does it, its the heat, the constant expansion and contraction of the metals in the laptop, eventually, it'll just give up, like a car engine.

When I was buying my 3rd gen ipod I was told by a friend that I would have to buy a seperate usb cable since macs didn't support firewire. The stupid thing was, at the time my imac was probably one of few computers that did.

He has since gone on to buy an ipod and is now the owner of a macbook. ;)

This isn't nearly as bad as some other people's stories but I got a 3G iPod a couple years ago. At the time almost no one at my school had iPods and some people actually made fun of me for having one. At the end of last achool year I think about 90% of the students had iPods. Although hopefully we will see the same trend with Macs as with iPods. Then instead of hearing you have a Mac? You will hear you don't have a Mac?

I got that reaction when I got the first iPod in my high school. No one else owned one, and I knew it, so I showed it off. People mocked me. Then those people came back the next year and had iPods. I told them all to bite my ass.

Actually as a counter to your counter point, its far better to leave a machine running then constantly turning it off and on everyday of the week. Reboot it sure but don't turn it off.

Computer components are just like car engines, turning them off and on will eventually wear out engine. Its the expansion and contraction that does it when it gets hot. On the downside to leaving it on though, you are wasting electricity.
Touché. Well, you learn something new everyday. I just always see that whenever people bring in computers for repair, they usually say that they leave it on all the time. I also find that my computer usually runs slowly when it's been left on for a long time. Will simply rebooting give it a boost after being on for a long time?

Daniel.

Whatever the machine, I would say it's better to reboot every so often. A lot of processes may not have shut down properly, memory is still being used for these and you just find it feeling slower. A reboot will clean out the memory and start everything again from scratch, (only theory mind you). Logging out and in often has a similar effect.

Now I sit and wait for others to shoot down what I've just said. :)

I don't know what those people are doing with those computers (are they macs btw) but I reboot mine (iBook 1Ghz) probably once every 2 to 3 months, I don't "notice" any difference over that period of time.

But recently I have been putting my iBook through xbench and have deliberately rebooted it and got a better score if its the first thing I do and not right after I've opened an application or left it running photoshop and other programs then quit them to run xbench. Make out of that what you will.

Slightly alarmingly, I once caught our conference suite manager telling a delegate that he couldn't connect his PowerBook by VGA to the internal projection system as 'it didn't connect to Macs'.

I travel round giving presentations every now and then with my PB15, and I've had that response several times.

To be honest, most Mac laptops don't actually have VGA ports; you have to remember to bring the DVI / VGA adaptor, and I've had a few sweaty moments rooting through my bag while setting up in front of a large audience...

According to a visitor to our studio a while back, our Macs use 'different internets' from PCs. Fancy that, eh?

But of course. Thing is, all the viruses in the world are on the internet that Windows uses. That's why Macs don't get viruses, it is because Mac users are cowards who use the other internet without viruses.

As Homer Simpson once said, "They have the internet on computers now?!"

I actually would never want to see the day when macs are as popular as windows is right now. I like the exclusiveness and elite appeal of macs. If that would ever happen, I would have to move to linux.

We may be fewer but we are smarter.

There are two things that definitely can contribute:

1) VM gets flushed on reboot.
2) If you have memory leaky programs and you even just shut them all down, this can help.

My biggest Windooze peeoff...

All those boxes that say " PC compatible" on them, so I ask...What does it mean? PC stands for Personal Computer, as far as I can recall...It's a PCI card, it better fit in my PC since by definition, all my boxes are PCs, then I ask the salesperson...Do they mean it has to be "Intel" compatible? They say...Yes :That's it SO, I ask, will it work with Linux? No, of course... SO, what you want to say it is that it works only with Windows...

Why don't they just write that on the box?...

A friend of mine who is a convert was talking to a PC guy, trying to get him to switch, and the guy asked, "Does it have, you know, word processing programs?"

I was converted in March of this year, and since then I've been a major force in the conversion of three PC users. The funny thing is, you never hear of Mac users switching to Windows....

There was a recent thread about one here.
However, your right, they are few and far between.

I was doing a PowerPoint presentation to a small group with my PB15.

The PB15 was connected to a projector. Everyone could see the setup that I was using.

One guy asked why I would use a Mac when it cannot do PowerPoint presentations.

I just looked at him with dismay. I pointed to my PB15, then the display, and said it seems to work okay. The others started giggling.
I love it!

I don't have a mac as of yet, but I am already hearing it. Why do you want a mac? I look at them like they are dense. And I tell them. I just bought a book on macs and I intend for them all to read it. Hopefully, I can get some converts out of them. Especially my husband.

I usually use a standard S-video cable for my traveling presentations. Every overhead projector I've come across has an S-video input, and if I forget my cable I can get a new one from Radio Shack for less than $10.

Also, here's a recent tale from my adventures with my father. My parents have had a Mac at home for years. However, my father has never had a very good time with it. He somehow manages to get that computer to freeze when doing the simplest of things (i.e. printing). He constantly goes on about how much more stable Windows is. (Ironically, my mother has told me that she's seen him dealing with his office Windows computers, and he has just as much difficulty with them as he ever had with the Macs.) Of course, my mother has never had these kinds of difficulties, using the exact same machine. Go figure.

Now, to continue, I have set my parents house up with a wireless network. This has allowed my father to stop using their iMac and start using his work Windows laptop at home. The network is, of course, run on Airport base-stations (a primary Extreme and a remote, repeater and printer-server, Express). Well, recently he was having trouble printing. He had tried unplugging and plugging back in the Express base-station. He had tried turning on and off the printer. He had tried unplugging all of the cables to the printer and plugging them back in. Everything he could think of, he had tried.

So, finally, I arrived. I took a look at the set-up. I found that his computer wasn't seeing the printer. The Bonjour Printer Setup wasn't seeing it at all. However, my G4PB saw it fine. So, I restarted his computer, and suddenly everything was fine.

His comment was, "My computer was the one culprit I didn't think of."

But, of course, he did think of the Apple products straight away!!

A Major Force In The Conversion Of 3 Pc Users? Lol

"I was converted in March of this year, and since then I've been a major force in the conversion of three PC users. " <------ This is one of the funniest lines I have heard today. hehe Don't get too mad, I just thought it sounded humorous. *S*

Wishing for a magic bus.
I hear lots. Trying to connect to a network, "oh it can't connect because its a mac"

Once I watched someone try to install a Windows version of Photoshop on their Mac and wonder why it wasn't working.

I hear this all the time: "Why does everything look different?"

Heard this from some guy I know: Macs are garbage. I nearly slapped him.

The biggest thing of all:

When people refer to Macs as Apples. Seriously, do your homework, they're MACINTOSHES! You say Apple, I think Apple ][.

I once saw on Usenet someone ask about the special type of hard drives used by Macs. This was only a few years ago, and Macs were using standard IDE drives at the time and had been for a while.

To be fair, though, many Mac users are similarly clueless when it comes to PCs.
Heh, I believe Apple used SCSI drives for a long time because they were better than IDE. With SATA the difference is not that great anymore....

I can relate to this. I use Keynote because of its great presenter screen and different transition effects. It opens Powerpoints files with no problems at all. When I show people what I can do with Keynote they are very impressed and want to buy it for their PC. I have great fun telling them it is only available on a mac :)

Trying to talk my niece into getting a MB instead of a Dell laptop.

My niece: I would get a Mac for college Uncle Steve, but I heard all they were good for was playing games.

Me: No, that is the one thing they don't do as well with.

My niece: Really? Well, maybe I should not get either laptop and get a PC?

Me: Have you considered beauty school instead of college?

The reverse: I hate it when people refer to Apple (the company) as "MAC". Same goes for referring to Adobe (the company) as "Photo Shop" (and no, there's no space or capital S in the name! Grr :) ).

I once had a Windows user ask me about my Mac, "So what version of Windows is this?"
