I got the HooToo shuttle, the HDMI out does not work with my new 2016 MBP.

I also have a few standalone adapters from apple, those do work.
did you get the one with the Passthrough DC-in charging port? I read that those models had a problem with the HDMI out and charging at the same time.

Heyz,

Please help me out...

I don't know too much about which brands I can trust to use with my new macbook pro.
I've heard that you should watch out because using the wrong dongle/hub could dammage your macbook.

I've been looking around for weeks now and I can't decide.
I would like to have 2 normal usb ports and an hdmi port, an sd card reader would be a nice bonus.
I ended up thinking about buying the hootoo shuttle usb-c hub, but now I had a look on the german amazon and they no longer sell the space gray one, only rose gold :(

I had a look on the american amazon but the price seems much higher (find it a bit too high) and I've heard you also might have to pay import taxes.

Can't find many other places where I could buy a good hub that I trust.

I also wouldn't mind buying separate dongles if the price is good but I'm just not sure which ones I should trust...

Please help!?

What did you guys buy?

Wait until March!

Just got my usb-c dock from caldigit, does not seem to be capable to drive any external monitor I try (HDMI or displayport). My mac just freezes when I connect it.

Using a base Macbook Pro 15" TB 2016. Anyone here has experienced the same issues with this setup?

When I disable automatic video choice in power settings, it doesn't freeze, but also doesn't work yet.

Have you tried to restart your MacBook Pro and USB-C Dock?
scroll down to the bottom of the page, looks like others may have the same problem and got it resolved by several ways
http://crazydiamondstar.blogspot.com/2016/08/usb-c-dock-best-baymax-for-macbook.html

Reset NVRAM and update to 10.12.2 when it is available.

Just checked CalDigit's FAQ
http://caldigit.com/usb-3-1-usb-c-dock/faq.asp#General

#15 It is possible that you can run into one of the following technical issues when connecting the USB-C Dock to 2016 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3:

A. External monitors do not work.
B. MacBook Pro's keyboard and trackpad locked up for about 2 minutes after connecting a DisplayPort or HDMI monitor
C. MacBook Pro can not wake from sleep mode.
D. MacBook Pro can not recover from closed clamshell mode.
E. External USB devices are ejected randomly from the USB-C Dock.

Please try one of the following solutions:

a). Power cycle the USB-C Dock by disconnecting and reconnecting the AC adapter.
b). Power cycle your MacBook Pro.
d). Reset NVRAM on your MacBook Pro. NVRAM resetting procedures.
e). Update to the latest version of Mac OS X (Currently 10.12.2 or above).
f). Only use the USB-C cable provided by CalDigit to connect to the USB-C Dock to MacBook Pro.

I feel like there should be a sticky with user reviews of the different options!...

I've decided to go with multiple adaptors instead of a single hub that does everything. It turns out to be cheaper than single hub cost for my needs. I will be using it both at work and at home, so I have two different locations with different needs to meet. I have two monitors at work and one at home, so I ordered 3 USB-C to DisplayPort adaptors. My monitor at home has a USB 3.0 hub, so I don't need them in a hub at home. I just need one USB-C to USB 3.0 to plug into it. I have one ThunderBolt 2 external drive, so I got a USB-C to TB2 adaptor for it. I ordered a stand alone SD reader that has both USB-C and USB 3.0 plugs. I'll need it when at home or traveling to import pictures, and keeping it separate makes it easier to carry. I can plug it into the USB 3 hub when at home and directly into the Mac on the go. The only hub-like adaptor I got has three USB 3 ports and gigabit network port to use at work since I don't have USB 3 in anything else at work.

This does mean I'll be using all my ports on my Mac for power, display and other extras. However, the cost of all these adaptors was about $100, which is less than two hubs would cost. Also none of the hubs will provide two monitor support since Apple doesn't support driving multiple displays from a single USB-C port (you only get mirrored displays if you do that). When I travel I won't need everything in a hub, either, and I'll probably just take the SD reader and the USB-C to USB 3 adaptor.

Can somebody provide me with brands that are to be trusted?
I've been thinking of just buying the small adaptors as well but i've seen prices going from €6 for 2 separate usb A - usb C adaptors to €16+ for only 1 usb A - usb C adaptor, for hdmi-usb C I've seen prices going from €6 to €40+

I got Apple's USB-C - USB 3 and their USB-C - TB 2.

I got Cable Matters for USB-C to DP: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K51GM46/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the USB-C/A SD card reader I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GR8E3EM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ordered a USB-C to USB 3 and gigabit ethernet hub from Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10330&cs_id=1033001&p_id=14503&seq=1&format=2
Looks like they're out of stock again on that product. Mine arrived yesterday. Hopefully it will work fine, since there aren't any reviews on it. There are others on Amazon I considered that seemed fine, too. I went with Monoprice because I've gotten cables from them in the past that have worked just fine.

It seems the biggest problems on hubs in the reviews are with the HDMI video output. It seems every hub has comments that the video flickers with the hubs. That coupled with the inability to do multiple screens from the hub made me decide to go with separate display outputs. My monitors don't have HDMI, so DisplayPort adaptors were my best option.

I got a couple of USB-C to USB-A adapters, on the go I'll just need this. I'll use HDMI and Ethernet only at home, and I won't neeed SD, since I shoot video with bigger cameras with no SD cards. So I'll wait till there's some dock specially designed for the new MBPs, because the ones available now are not realiable in some or other aspect (either HDMI or charging the MBP.)

Aha, I read over the fact that you're using the cable to hook up the LG 27UD88. In that case, it's simple; when you hook up the display via a single USB-C cable, the USB 3 ports will drop to USB 2 speeds -- like you said.

I'm not sure if the LG supports it, but perhaps you could use that Plugable cable for the 3.0 ports on the monitor, and for charging the laptop. And then use a separate USB-C-to-HDMI cable for the graphics. But I don't know if that'll work.

Yes I think I will try that, most probably when I get the upcoming OWC thunderbolt 3 dock :
https://eshop.macsales.com/preorder/owc-thunderbolt-3-dock/
(as I also need the digital audio out)

Ah but this dock will not have HDMI !! (just noticed, a bit strange really..), so I will need a mini DP to DP cable I guess, or in the meantime there might be a proper USB-C 2m cables, will see ! :)
I hesitated in returning the display for the upcoming 5k 27" LG, but quite happy about it, and the upcoming LG only has USB-C/TB3 connections, so would still have this cable problem anyway.

That is the best of the docking stations, but I really wish it had an HDMI port. Oh well, still no perfect solution for my needs.

Yep.

And I tried different ways, none worked:
  1. HDMI + passthrough USB Type-C charging (through the Hootoo Shuttle hub)
  2. HDMI + USB Type-C Charging (in a separate USB Type-C port directly off the MBP)
  3. HDMI + no charging

It's a Swiss manufacturer so I got it in a local online shop.

There's a where to buy section on the LMP website. France is also listed.

Yes but all the adresses for France are in Switzerland :)
And not on Amazon or other online retailers apparently.
But anyway it is only HDMI 1.4 (4k at 30hz not 60), so does not fit my need :/

It's worked for me with a 13" MBP and a MB, but getting it to work is fiddley and usually requires plugging and replugging multiple times.

This has been my experience too with the HooToo USB-C hub and the new MBP TB 15". Sometimes HDMI stops working, sometimes charging starts going into an infinite loop of giving the <beep> sound that you get when you plug the MBP in.

Very frustrating. Just recently I ran out of power when plugged in because I didn't realize the system was not charging even though everything was plugged into the USB-C hub.
