Unfortunately I won't know more till tomorrow morning when I officially try the pre-order. I am hoping there is a way to use the trade value at time of purchase, as I like apple but, could really use the $500 elsewhere....guess if I HAVE to get it on a gift card, I will be getting a new apple watch too :)

Look here: https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in

Looks like you can get a refund on purchase of new phone, starting with pre-orders tonight

Question about trade in. I have an iPhone 7 that my parents gave me. I let my kid play games on it right now. Perfect condition. However I believe it’s blacklisted through T-Mobile. My dad lost the phone, ended up upgrading to the 8. A few weeks later someone found it and returned it to him. He’s old and never realized T-Mobile wanted it back. It’s been a year or so. Would they accept that as a trade in?

I sent a message to Apple Support via iMessage about this, and it came back with this response...presumably automated due to the quick reply:

It depends on what you buy and how you pay for it.

If you buy an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch and pay in full, we'll apply a refund to your original payment method up to the total purchase price. For any remaining amount, you'll receive and Apple Store Gift Card via email.

If you buy an iPhone using carrier financing, the iPhone Upgrade program, or Apple iPhone Payments, we'll apply a refund to your payment method up to the total amount paid for taxes and fees. For any remaining amount, you'll receive an Apple Store Gift Card via email.

So take that for what it's worth I guess? *shrugs*

Hmm. Thanks. So it sounds like if you use a financing option...they will just give a refund to your credit card or however you paid?

But to an extent it looks like - if I'm interpreting correctly, they will only refund you up to taxes and fees if you go financing. So like if taxes are $100, you'd get refunded that, but then the rest you'd get in a gift card.

It sounds like if you want the full $525 (say if it's an iPhone X), paying in full may be the only way to get a "full" refund vs in the form of a gift card.

Tmonews just posted price leaks....looks accurate enough. $379 down for a 64gb Max is rough!

https://www.tmonews.com/2018/09/t-mobile-iphone-xs-iphone-xs-max-deal-offers-300-savings-trade-in/

Says that 3+ tenure and higher credit tier and you can get the Xs Max for $72.99 down. I’m ok with that

However, I don’t know how accurate that is. It says for users with a credit score of “850 or above” can get that. However, 850 is the highest score so that’s impossible.

Thanks. I just paid off my EIP with T-Mobile. I think I am just going to sell my phone the old fashioned way. I never used swappa so I may try that.

$500 down just to turn in the current one seems a bit much.

So think you'll go the upgrade financing vs paid in full route? I guess I'm just feeling more tugged toward Apple's program since the last few years of trying to upgrade with T-Mo have been a bear.

Has anyone seen the unconfirmed pricing on Tmonews? Not official -- but from a "source thats been reliable in the past: -- iPhone Xs Max JOD
64GB: $379 down, $26 per month, 256GB: $529 down, $24 per month, 512GB: $729 down, $24 per month - "The source also notes that T-Mobile customers with more than three years of tenure and a credit score of 850 or higher will qualify to get the 64GB iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max for $72.99 down."

Like with the iPhone X, I'll find out in the morning when I wake up.. If those prices turn out to be accurate, I'll take a pass -- at least until the full 18 mos are up on our JOD for an 8 and an X -- I had to drop $279 + tax on the X upfront last year.

So glad I switched to Apple’s upgrade program today.

Folks, with a lease, which EIP/JoD are, your aim should always be to pay as little upfront as possible. It doesn’t make any sense to put a large down payment on something you’re going to trade in within a year or so...you’ll essentially be throwing that money away.

If you plan on keeping your phone for 2 years then yeah, it makes sense. But for the love of all things holy, if you’re an annual upgrader like I am, jump ship to Apple. $379 upfront for a phone is absurd—and you still have to pay for insurance! At least Apple’s monthly payment includes AppleCare! With the iUP you’ll pay $150ish upfront and $54/month for the base XS Max. It’ll take a smidge more than FOUR months of payments PLUS that $150 downpayment to equal TMO’s downpayment LOL.

Oh, and you have to have a PERFECT credit score to get the special pricing? FOH!!

So I have JOD and was thinking of going the Apple route. Since you did it, how much did they charge you upfront? And I noticed when I started the process it says something about if I’m replacing a phone on my account. Do you know what that means?

Sounds better for sure, but then how good does your score have to be to jump over to Apple? I realize we've always been headed this way, for a long time anyway, but it's getting ridiculous to have to go through hard credit applications to get into these phone plans that allow you to upgrade. It's making me want to keep a phone for a few years for once.

Decided to take the plunge and go the Apple route and got pre-approved. Am I able to upgrade my spouse's phone as well from my phone, or would we have to order separately on hers through the Apple Store app?

850, holy crap not even my parents have credit that good.

Got no-where trying to figure out my JOD down payment through chat. They just kept saying they don’t have pricing information.

was gonna go the trade in route. TN offered me 472 for my 64gb X. I owe 360 tho...so I listed it on eBay for $675 and it sold in an hour. so I gotta enough to pay off the EIP and the down payment they gonna finesse me for the XS.

I'll know the total upfront tonight when I make the purchase, but the first monthly payment of $54.08 is included in the price. Then you pay the full tax on the $1099 (I'm getting the 64 GB Max), so that's why I estimated around $150 upfront.

I just added a new phone to my account instead of selecting the replacement option. I'm not sure if it even makes a difference, tbh.

I was most worried about the credit check, too. I have a Chapter 7 bankruptcy on my report from 2014 due to being an idiot with finances when I was younger. I got approved with no issue with scores from all 3 credit bureaus hovering right at 700.

611 says well qualified 3 years will be $99 & $109 down for XS & XS Max 64gb. Under 3 years is $279 & $379. They said they just got the information.

BUT -- you have to also look at the total cost over the next 12 months if you plan on upgrading every year and take everything into consideration.. Remember -- if you were JOD on what you currently have and you do IUP -- you still need to pay your remaining lease payments AND turn it in. Of course you can opt to pay the remaining payments plus the buyout (for me thats $460 plus tax = $499.68) and turn around and try to sell it.. If I dont buy it out -- thats $225.94 remaining (8 payments plus tax). Then I'm looking at $94.78 upfront to Apple for the tax, and $54.08 for the next 12 months. Thats $743.74 for 12 months -- PLUS the $225.94 in remaining payments on the JOD lease. Now you're paying $969.68 over the next year to upgrade -- IF -- you took the X on JOD.

Now -- assume the pricing of 379 down/26 mo is accurate -- and you're on JOD now -- your total price over next 12 months is $691. Youre paying tax upfront on the 379. You're then paying tax on each individual payment. For me thats $411.68 upfront, $28.24 month. If I go 12 months -- thats 750.56 -- but -- I'm also not stuck with the remaining payments on my existing JOD.

I'm at the point now where I kind of want to get out of being stuck in JOD.. Its not the program it used to be.. Tmo has become quite obnoxious about it as well -- i.e. not announcing pricing until 12 AM PDT day of pre-order launch.

And what exactly do they consider Tier 4?
