So Calif
I just switched from AT&T and I was annoyed at a few of their one time charges, but after all was said and done my family plan with 4 phones went from $141 on AT&T to a flat $100 on T-Mobile so I’ll get my money back pretty fast.

I couldn’t believe how much cheaper they were. Including the taxes and fees in their Magenta plan is great. AT&T and Verizon hide a bunch of charges in there every month, not just once.
Good for you!
I did the same thing when I switched from VZ to TMO many years ago.
Not only the monthly access went from $200 to $100 for 4 lines, but also foreign country roaming.

When I first started traveling internationally, VZ charged $125 per line just to roam internationally.
TMO said they don't charge a penny extra.
So there you have it after 10 years traveling the world and not an extra cent paid to TMO.

Did YOU order a SIM free or other carrier phone ?

Some others are saying that TMO phones will be fine using the 5G without having to pay for a SIM card.

I am so confused.
Edited - I had some facts wrong.

This whole thing has become so derailed with partial truths and bad advice. The article Nate posted was regarding accessing a new portion of 5G just now rolling out.

Your best bet is to just use the eSIM that comes with the phone. Otherwise, if you buy a "T-Mobile" phone it will come with a current SIM. Even if that SIM somehow can't access the new "standalone 5G" mentioned, you aren't going to notice that anyway. Wait a while until all the preorder stuff dies down and then figure out if you think you need to do something.

The sweet spot for 5G is midband and that's where T-Mobile is going to eat the other carriers' lunch. TMo has invested heavily in midband whereas Verizon rolled out this flashy mmWave spectrum at the Apple launch event that makes for good speed test screenshots but is not realistic for everyday use. It doesn't travel far enough. Midband is the balance between speed and actually having a signal that can traverse some distance and travel through walls/trees/etc.

Bottom line, do not waste your money or energy on a new SIM card. It's not necessary for all practical purposes, especially if you just use the eSIM. The support article makes it sound like you'll get a text if you need to upgrade your SIM. At that point, I would expect T-Mobile to incur that cost, not me.

Everyone using T-Mobile. You need to know that to take advantage of 5G network you MUST get a new sim card.

Question: if you bought your phone through Apple.com (vs T.Mo) and wanted a SIM card included, you’re getting a 5G card?

Ordered them directly from T-Mobile so they will be 5G ready. 2 256 GB Pacific Blue Pro variants for me and the SO. Nov 10-16 delivery. Hoping they underpromise and over deliver on that date.

Great tip. Thank you. Very strange that you need a new SIM card. I've never heard that before for 5G, but I'll be sure to activate the new sim it comes with instead of swapping SIM cards this time.

If you ordered a "SIM" free iPhone then you will need to get a new sim card. If you have an old iPhone 6 though iPhone 11 you will need to either use esim OR get a new sim card that is 5G compatible. That is my point behind all of this.

T-Mobile rep I had talked to said that the iPhone 12 and its variants will not ship with a sim card because they too are joining the environment friendly approach. I don't know if this is true, but who knows

I purchased through the TMobile app about 5 minutes before the actual release time window was supposed to open. 10/23 for shipping date.

Hi guys I’ve been a lurker for years and always love this time of the year when we all come together with our obsession 😩 Thanks for all the good info shared!
I have a question... did anyone pay the extra shipping to have it “overnight delivery”? I didn’t this year and I usually don’t and still receive my phone on release day. I think last year I paid for it and did not receive it release day. I took my chances this year hoping the “2 day shipping” would somehow work out as it did previous years and I’ll get it on 10/23.

I did call T-Mobile to see if I could change the shipping since I haven’t been charged yet but no luck. She pretty much said I’d have to cancel the order and get to the back of the line. 😕
