The announcement of some kind of coating on the metal rim. (Something baked on? Clear? Not really all that different looking?) Or perhaps a slightly larger, plastic rim with a metal interior. In other words, a subtle change.

All iPhones shipping and iPhones in stores currently have it. Any customers who want to exchange an 'old' i4 for a new one are free to do so at any Apple store.

In short: A hardware change, but one that's very simple to change on their end and basically looks the same.

Something along these lines. Apple needs to take the big dive and lose a sh`itload of money in order to appease EVERYONE. Anything short of this will leave some people pissed off (and some happy obviously).

Steve Jobs will have to do a mea culpa and swallow his pride.
He is being forced to by Apple Board and lawyers and PR people.

He won't offer up anything like a $$ refund or bumper. This would be admitting there is a problem and class-action lawyers will have more ammunition against Apple.

He will be very contrite, say Apple completely dropped the ball on this and they owe more to the customers, and will do all that it takes to get back our trust. He will be quite angry. It may even not be Steve since he may refuse to do it. Maybe Scott or Phil or Ive will do it.

Apple will say that 4.1 is coming soon and will make things a whole lot better.

Apple will blame AT&T network briefly-- no loss, the exclusive contract is almost over.

Apple will announce something new to try and shift the news cycle to a new story (maybe pre-announce a new Apple device/Apple TV/Cloud service/iPod Touch?- why not- we all know it is coming)

Apple MAY extend current iPhone owners' return window for another 30 days to say they are doing something. Apple knows this is their cheapest option. Few iPhones are being returned even with the problem.

The dirty secret is that Apple's real problem to fix is not their defective iPhone-- it is their reputation. Steve just needs to sound touchy feely, caring, and contrite. His real mission is to fix Apple's reputation, not necessarily to fix the iPhone or issue refunds.

Will Apple get away with this? Stay tuned....

My post is my guess 'A.'

Your post is my guess 'B.'

I'm honestly flipping a coin to decide which it will be. I HOPE it's mine. I won't be surprised if it's yours.

Again, couldn't have said it better. I don't think it's fair to say he WILL do something though. He's strongly attached to his business and reputation...and I think to fix his reputation he needs to fix the problem. Otherwise people are going to be putting their iPhones back on the shelves for good.

No, he will say that Dallas had perfect timing and that post was hilarious. Then he will lick his index finger and make an imaginary hash mark in the air and say, "That's one for Dallas!"

Problem was a manufacturing defect not a design defect.
~10,000 units have defective antennas.
Limited recalls for repairs.

I like this. . . and all White model will already come shipped this way. Maybe. If so we probably would've had a leak already. Hopefully this will happen though.

I'm almost 65% sure we'll hear an official date for the White model as well.

Chuck Norris will be the official spokesperson for the new iPhone. If you have any problems with the phone you must go through him 1st!

Ask Apple
Give users, within a certin serial number range, two options
1. Keep current hardware, but given 100$ Apple credit and a free bumper
2. New hardware

Their good reputation is worth an order of magnitude + of what this would cost.

I also think so.
This is not an Apple "event". There are no website teasers and marketing around this.

If they're calling it a press conference, it's going to have a serious tone. If they don't say something at this point the shareholders will revolt.

Apple stock is going to TANK tomorrow given this announcement today.

Press conferences for good news are on Mondays.
Press conferences for bad news are on Fridays.....

Steve Jobs: There is no issue with the iPhone 4.
Gizmodo: You must be drunk.
Steve Jobs: No, I am Steve Jobs. And what the hell are you doing here, pimple boy?
Gizmodo: Pimple boy? Why don't you tell everyone how you stole your new liver, Jobs?
Steve Jobs: I repeat, the Apple iPhone 4 has no issue, with the exception of idiots who bought one, have found out about the issue, yet will not return their iPhone 4, because it's just awesome.
ESPN: Steve, what do you think about LeBron going to the Heat?
Steve Jobs: LeBron James doesn't have a signal issue.
ESPN: Um, what?
Sally Jessie Raphael: Next on "Sally" men who have sex with GI JOES.
Rupert Humperdink: SEGA!
Lion-O (of the Thundercats): Give me sight beyond sight!
Steve Jobs: Muhuhahahahahaha!

I'm all for a little randomness now and again, but that was painful to read.

I'm not expecting much from this press conference (especially not any freebies).

This is kinda what I was thinking, the sad part is I really wouldn't be able to decide.

If they are not recalling the iPhone. I think they will put up the pre order for the white ip4 today to show the stock holders there's not going to be a recall and to try to prevent the stock from droping.

iOS 4 release and maybe the white iPhone release date.....then my iP4 will be heading back to the store and I will be giving up on Apple because they don't care about their customers issues and don't have the guts to admit their mistakes.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Taking advantage of media interest to announce a new product. Will have nothing to do with iPhone 4. Worlds press will be there. Take advantage of the eyeballs and announce something new. It will also take press away from iPhone 4 issues and divert it to new product.

This makes a lot of sense. Especially with the recent article about apple telling its employees something big is coming. Great way to get all the press there thinking it is going to be the ultimate iphone confession and then WHAM new product announcement gets all kinds of press. It may be mixed with more shots at iphone 4 at first, but ultimately new product could take the spotlight.
