This is a possibility, but it won't work all fine and nice if Apple tries it. Apple announces an iPhone, iPod Touch, MBP, iPod Nano, iPhone, and now iPad every single year. One small product update isn't going to take all of the attention away from the just-announced and released, and immensely popular (beyond all other Apple product lines), iPhone 4. It would actually backfire into more outrage at the fact that Apple still didn't address the problems with iPhone 4.

They could do both, extremely brief apology with eta or possible solution. Then while they have them there "one more thing"...

Apple will just say that they have just reached an agreement with AT&T about all of iphone 4 owners will be eligible to buy iphone 5 at discounted price as long as you purchase them by this summer. There you go. Most of us will just throw away iphone 4 by next year because of iphone 5. Problem solved.

There goes Apples enviormental efforts.

My money is on :

"The demand for the iPhone 4 has exceeded even our wildest imagination. So we are raising the price to $299.99 for the 16GB and $399.99 for the 32GB."

They better say something about the reception issues. Apple lost over 30 million after the Consumer Reports report came out. They need to reassure the shareholders some how.

My prediction:
- MobileMe going free thanks to new server farms.
- iTunes.com cloud-based music service.
- New Apple TV running iOS.
- New Genius Bar procedure to ensure speedy service for any existing iPhone 4 issues (of which we still claim there are very few cases).
- White iPhone already up for pre-order
- Blame AT&T.
- Blame Gizmodo.
- Blame suicidal Chinese workers

Other remote possibilities:
- Free AppleCare or extended warranty for all ip4 owners
- If Apple really wants to thrash AT&T, offer to pay peoples' EFT (or buy them a Microcell) while announcing a non-AT&T partner.
- Introduce some insane repair or peripheral antenna design they've developed to compensate for AT&T's ****** network.

Here's another crazy thought..

Perhaps their gonna kill the ATT deal exclusive. They will use this issue as an out siting poor signal strength. iPhone 4 White goes to another carrier.

Who the F knows what's gonna happen. All I know is that the Apple of late is not the same Apple I fell in love with. And the slide all started to happen with this damn iPhone/touch success.

They could give a rip less about OSX. iOS generates them cash. How long has it been since there was a Mac Pro upgrade? That thing is seriously long in the tooth.

I know I'm not alone when I say this, but Apple cold really lose some long time users come Friday if this is not corrected to perfection.

I think it is pretty obvious that there will be no recall and no free bumper cases.

Apple will say the following:

1. The iPhone 4 launch has been a tremendous success with XXX units sold in the first 3 weeks.

2. There has been widespread publicity of antenna issues related to how the signal strength indicator is calculated and also how the phone is held. We are preparing a software update to address the signal strength indicator issues. The other issue which primarily affects users in weak signal areas and occurs to some degree with any phone can be prevented by adjusting the way the phone is held or by using a case.

3. Apple and AT&T provides 30 days within which owners can return their iPhone 4. This is enough time to determine if the iPhone 4 meets the expectations of the owner. Apple will generously extend the return period to within 15 days of the release of the signal strength indicator software update to give everyone the opportunity to evaluate the performance. If anyone is not satisfied, then they can return their phone.

I had the signal strength issue on the Nexus One and the biggest issue was that it took too long to change from 3G to 2G (up to 15 seconds). The latest software changes almost immediately. Ultimately I found that I automatically changed the way I held the phone slightly and I had no problems. Based on how I now hold my N1, I expect that I will not have the iPhone 4 problem. All this problem is doing is keeping me from ordering without holding it in my hand first. And if I don't like it, I'll return it.

I hope they extend the 30-day return period for the people who purchased on release date, giving us more time to think about our commitment.

Specifically, 30-day period from the release of iOS 4.01, 4.1 or whatever fix they have for the IPhone4.

:D

Trust me.. It's not easy or convenient to hold it the way it needs to be held. A drop is inevitable. Glass meets concrete in 3,2,1...

10% press asks Steve to hold his iPhone death grip style and make a call.Steve storms of with a red face!!

Or like me, he can do actually make the call and not get to No Signal.

Seriously, when I did my Youtube vid for some guys on another forum (as I was the only one with the phone at launch) I did drop from 5 bars to 3 but it just would not drop any lower!

I know I'm not alone when I say this, but Apple cold really lose some long time users come Friday if this is not corrected to perfection.

You see, there's the problem. Apple has built up a reputation so good, they 'must' have zero defects (can do no wrong) on the MILLIONS of products successfully sold to the MILLIONS of satisfied customers.......IMPOSSIBLE.

'Some' people have issues with the iPhone 4, many (like me) don't. IMO, Apple has created a Customer Service which is considered among the best. IMO, they are handling the antenna situation well given the amount of negative media hype it's getting from 'some' people. 30 days is more than enough to see if you like it. Get an Android phone or iPhone 3GS if the antenna issue is bothering you. Skip the iPhone 4 and wait for iPhone 5. I just saw a news clip today where they showed 1 (just 1) iPhone 4 user return her phone because she kept getting dropped calls......where are the 100's if not 1,000's of more people with this problem?? I want to see those long lines of people returning their iPhone 4, just like the first buyers on June 24!

So no matter what is said on Friday, there will always be 'some' people who won't be satisfied. If only we lived in a PERFECT world.......

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd bet my bottom dollar that at some point in the speech, El Jobso says the word...

"iPhone"

What are the odds?

My prediction is similar to others we've seen. They'll say something like this:

The iPhone 4 has been our most popular product ever. We've been excited and humbled by unprecedented sales volume of the past few weeks. It's been our biggest Apple launch ever. Millions of people are loving their iPhone 4's. Retina etc. Awesome.

We've made incredible improvements in the RF design of this device. Here are some examples of press coverage describing the iPhone 4's ability to hold onto calls in what used to be dead spots.

We understand that there have been reports of some people experiencing reception problems when the iPhone 4 is handled in a particular way. We agree that appearance of these problems is related to the "innovative" external antenna design, but this issue has been exacerbated by an error we made in how we display the bars in iOS. [Reference what was learned from Anandtech's analysis.]

We are extremely confident in the overall design of the product. So much so that today we're announcing that anyone who buys an iPhone 4 during its first 6 months can return it--no questions asked--within 30 days of purchase, with no restocking fee, regardless of which authorized reseller you bought it from. This includes the 1.7 million people who bought an iPhone 4 on launch day. We're confident you will love your iPhone.

In addition, next week we will release a software update that will (among other enhancements) do two things. 1) It will make our signal display more accurate, and 2) it will include an update to the radio equipment in the iPhone that will make it more effective at maximizing signal strength even when the two antennas are bridged by your hand.

Finally, anyone who has already bought an iPhone 4 will receive a $50 Apple Store gift card with our compliments. If you would prefer to make sure the two external antennas are never bridged by the way you hold your iPhone, you can buy a bumper or another case on us. If you don't feel you need a case for your iPhone (or if you already bought one) we hope you enjoy whatever you buy with the card.

That's all we have to announce for today. Thanks for coming. And screw Jason Chen. And also those dirtbags at Consumer Reports.

I would be more than satisfied with a response like this, although the $50 gift card is probably a tad optimistic (but recall for precedent the credit to existing iPhone users when the price dropped suddenly). And I bet they don't say word one about the proximity sensor issue, or the white iPhone 4.
What's my prize? :)
